Chinese democracy activists sign a letter to congratulate Lai Ching-te and Hsiao Bi-chin on their inauguration

Lai Ching-te and Hsiao Bi-chin will be inaugurated as the President and Vice President of the Republic of China on 20 May 2024. Wang Dan, Wang Juntao and more than 20 other Chinese overseas democracy activists signed a letter to congratulate them, and hoped that the new Taiwanese government would support China's democratic and progressive forces.

On 19 May 2024, Wang Dan sent this letter on Facebook and X platform respectively, congratulating Lai Ching-te and Hsiao Bi-chin on their inauguration as the 16th President and Vice President of the Republic of China.

The letter said, "We believe that Taiwan's development is at a transitional juncture and needs political leaders with ideals, responsibilities and ambition to promote Taiwan's democratic progress and economic growth that benefits the people and safeguard Taiwan's dignity and security. We believe that you are willing and capable of becoming such leaders!"

The letter stated, "The economic, social and cultural changes triggered by the technological revolution in today's world pose huge challenges to mankind, and the confrontation between freedom, democracy and authoritarianism is emerging. Taiwan is not only at the forefront of the wave of freedom and democracy against authoritarianism, but Taiwan's experience is gradually being accepted as a model of success. We hope that you will continue to carry forward Taiwan's important role in major crises and conflicts in the fate of mankind with your ideals and beliefs."

The letter also said that Chinese democracy activists also hope that Lai Ching-te, Hsiao Mei-chin and Taiwan's new ruling team "can support China's democratic and progressive forces and the efforts to establish a constitutional democratic China, so that the Chinese people can enjoy modern civilized human rights while Taiwan and the free world can have long-term peace!"

More than 20 well-known Chinese democracy activists overseas signed the petition, including: Wang Dan, Wang Juntao, Perry Link Link), Wuerkaixi, Wang Chaohua, Zhang Boli, Hu Ping, Yan Jiaqi, Liao Yiwu, Zheng Xuguang, Fang Zheng, Lv Jinghua, Chen Liqun, Kang Zhengguo, Chen Weiming, Li Hengqing, Feng Chongyi, Zhao Xin, Wang Anna, Wu Zuolai, Jin Yan, Zheng Cunzhu, Guan Yao, Jie Lijian, Zhao Changqing, Geng Guanjun, Yang Xiao, Tang Kai.
