A DC-8-72 air quality monitoring aircraft belonging to the United States Space Administration (NASA) departed from Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines on the morning of the 15th and flew around southern Taiwan at low altitude. Because of its model it is quite rare and therefore attracts the attention of many aircraft fans.

The Ministry of Environment, NASA and multinational academic and research institutions are conducting an Asian air quality flight experiment. On 15 February 2024, air quality observations were conducted in the airspace of central, southern and eastern Taiwan for about 4 hours to comprehensively explore and analyze the causes and 3D distribution changes of air pollution in the southern region.

NASA scientific research aircraft are equipped with precision instruments for gaseous pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCS) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as well as aerosol particle size distribution, number concentration and chemical composition, to observe air pollution in real time during the flight Vertical changes in chemical composition and concentration provide high spatial and temporal resolution air quality data across the country.

According to the flight tracking software "Flightradar24", the DC-8-72 air quality monitoring aircraft numbered NASA 817 flew from Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines to Taiwan in the morning of 15 February, flying at an altitude of less than 5,000 feet over central and southern China. On the way, it made several touch-and-go flights at Tainan Airport and Chiayi Airport.

The Ministry of Environment stated that it hopes to cooperate with NASA to share high-resolution air pollution observation data, and together with the ongoing intensive observation of high-screen 3D air quality experiments, comprehensively explore and analyze the causes and 3D distribution changes of air pollution in the southern region, and formulate more sophisticated air pollution based on this. pollution control strategies.
