According to Reuters, Singapore’s Minister of Transport Chee Hong Tat said that Singapore plans to require all flights from the country to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from 2026. Singapore is joining the global aviation industry’s efforts to shift to green and environmentally friendly fuels.

According to plans announced by Chee Hong Tat at the Changi Aviation Summit on the eve of the Singapore Air Show, the country aims to achieve a 1% SAF target from 2026 and plans to increase it to 3-5% by 2030, depending on Global developments and wider availability and adoption of SAF.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore said, "The use of SAF is a key way to decarbonize aviation and is expected to contribute about 65% of the carbon emission reductions required to achieve net zero emissions by 2050."

SAF can be made through synthetic processes or from biomaterials such as waste cooking oil or wood chips. SAF currently accounts for 0.2% of the aviation fuel market.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore plans to impose a tax on the purchase of SAF to provide cost certainty to airlines and passengers. The levy will be set at a fixed amount based on the SAF target and the then projected SAF price. This will vary based on factors such as distance traveled and class of travel.
