Study: Effectiveness of 2 of 3 covi vaccines used in US drops below 50% after 6 months

Reporter : Zachary Stieber, The Epoch Times PREMIUM

The effectiveness of the three covi vaccines available in the United States has declined in recent months, with protection against infection falling under 50% for two of them after six months, according to a new study.

Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine dropped to 58 percent in September from 89.2 percent effectiveness in March, researchers found. During the same time frame, Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine fell to 43.3% from 86.9%, and Johnson & Johnson’s shot declined to 13.1% from 86.4%.

Dr. Stephen Hahn, head of the Food and Drug Administration during the final portion of the Trump administration, said last year that the agency would not authorize COVID-19 vaccines that were not at least 50% effective against infection.

The researchers also found that the vaccines’ protection against death waned after six months, particularly among older people. Instead of comparing the effectiveness in March and September, though, they used the data to pinpoint the effectiveness from July to October. For those 65 or older, the effectiveness against death was 75.5% for Moderna’s vaccine, 70.1% effective for Pfizer’s vaccine, and 52.2% effective for Johnson & Johnson’s jab.

For younger people, the effectiveness was higher: 84.3% for the Pfizer vaccine, 81.5% for Moderna, and 73% for Johnson & Johnson.

While early data showed high vaccine effectiveness against both infection and death, “our results suggest vaccines are less effective in preventing infection associated with the Delta variant,” researchers wrote.

While the vaccinated over time faced a higher risk of getting infected with covid or dying, the unvaccinated were still more likely to contract the illness or die from it, they said.

Researchers with the Public Health Institute, the University of Texas School of Public Health, and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center carried out the research, which was published in the journal Science.

Researchers examined covid infections and deaths by vaccination status in 780,225 veterans between 1 February and 1 October. They used data from the Department of Veterans Affairs and received funding from the Mercatus Center at George Mason University and the University of California Office of the President.

“Our study gives researchers, policy makers, and others a strong basis for comparing the long-term effectiveness of covi vaccines, and a lens for making informed decisions around primary vaccination, booster shots, and other multiple layers of protection, including masking mandates, social distancing, testing, and other public health interventions to reduce the chance of spread,” Dr. Barbara Cohn, the lead author, said in a statement.

The research supports recommendations for many Americans, including all Johnson & Johnson recipients, to get booster shots, she said.

Other studies have shown that COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness has waned over time, leading to the booster recommendations from U.S. health authorities, but this was the first to examine all three available in the United States. It also suggested a lower effectiveness against death than many other studies.

COVID-19 is the disease caused by the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus / covi.

Limitations of the study include not knowing why or where people were tested; researchers required a person to have been tested for covid to be included in the analysis.

Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, and the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases didn’t respond to overnight requests for comment, and haven’t appeared to react publicly to the study.

The findings come after two other studies, both preprints, showed that vaccine effectiveness against infection decreased over time after initial injection.

Swedish researchers, using data from nationwide registries, found that Pfizer’s vaccine dropped in effectiveness to 30–47 percent at day 121–180 from 92% at day 15.

“From day 211 and onwards, no effectiveness could be detected,” they said. The Moderna shot also declined in effectiveness, but retained some protection after day 181.

Israeli researchers, meanwhile, extracting data from a nationwide database, found that Pfizer’s vaccine was less effective against both infection and severe disease over time after full vaccination.

Oral covid drug will come out. Expert: Can't replace vaccine

Image : Many doctors warned people who are hesitant about vaccines not to confuse the benefits of drug therapy with the preventive effects of vaccines. (Photo by Reuters)

The study of oral antiviral drugs for covid developed by American pharmaceutical companies Merck and Pfizer shows that if they can be taken at the early stage of diagnosis, they can significantly reduce the risk of severe covid but many doctors warned people who are hesitant about vaccines not to confuse the benefits of drug therapy with the preventive effects of vaccines.

Reuters reported that the non-profit organization Kaiser Family Foundation survey showed that although 72% of American adults have received the first dose of covi vaccine, the progress of vaccination has slowed down because of American politics. The controversy has led to disagreements on the value and safety of vaccines.

Some disease experts worry that the advent of oral medications may further hinder vaccination operations. Scott Ratzan, a public health communications expert at the City University of New York (CUNY), who led the research, said that preliminary findings from the CUNY School of Public Health of 3,000 US citizens showed that the drug may hinder vaccination campaigns. Rashan said that one in eight respondents would rather receive medication than vaccinate.

Baylor College of Medicine professor Peter Hotez believes that relying entirely on drugs to fight the virus is a bit like rolling dice, which is a high-risk game.

Reuters interviewed six infectious disease experts. Although they were optimistic about the future development of oral drugs, they all agreed that drugs cannot replace vaccines.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said that choosing not to vaccinate would be an "unfortunate mistake." Oral medicine is a treatment method for those who are unfortunately infected and is the reason why society is in danger.

Shanghai Huangpu is now blocked. Public: the zero-clearing policy is impossible

Reporter : Li Lan / Special correspondent : Luo Ya / https://www.ntdtv.com/gb/2021/11/08/a103263907.html

The Chinese Communist Party has officially notified that in the 20 days from 17 October to 5 November 2021, a total of 918 cases of infection across the country have spread to 20 provinces; the current round of the epidemic was imported from abroad triggering another epidemic. However, in Shanghai, which has not notified new local cases, there have been widespread reports of positive cases. In addition, the mainland people said that it is impossible for the Chinese Communist Party to adhere to the policy of clearing zero for epidemic prevention.

The new round of epidemics in mainland China since 17 October has affected 20 provinces and 44 cities.

According to the notification from the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission from 18 October to 7 November 2021, there have been no new confirmed cases in Shanghai during this period; the new cases were imported from abroad.

However, a Shanghai citizen revealed to reporters that the surrounding area of a building near the intersection of Nanchang Road and Maoming Road in Huangpu District, Shanghai has been sealed off. Two white vans and several police cars parked on the side of the road.

Mr. Zheng, a Shanghai citizen, said, "There seems to be a case in Shanghai. I heard that it has not been officially announced."

Regarding the round of the epidemic after the "11th", the Chinese Communist Party officially stated that "this round of epidemic was caused by multiple unrelated overseas sources", but the mainland people did not approve it.

Mr. Chen said, “What’s the report from the top and the bottom is not really true.”

Mr. Chen said that from the official reports, everyone could not see the true situation of the epidemic in a certain place.

Mr. Chen, a resident of Hebei, said, “We can’t hear any official reports. Generally, we can feel something from the side (there is an epidemic). You will be notified where you have returned from, and you have to report to the brigade."

In addition, when the international community generally believes that humans will have to coexist with the CCP virus, the CCP authorities still insist on adopting a "zero tolerance" policy in epidemic prevention and control, and some people in mainland China have also expressed doubts about this.

Mr. Zheng, a Shanghai citizen: "The zero-clearing policy. You said that all zeroing is impossible because people are moving. I don't understand. It controls, such strict control or there are (epidemic) occurrences. Anyway, it makes people panic. I don’t think this is necessary. It’s not a problem that you keep sealing like this, the people have no freedom."

If no vaccinations, covi infection treatment costs are paid by themselves

Compiled by : Chen Chengliang / https://news.ltn.com.tw/news/world/breakingnews/3730847

The Ministry of Health of Singapore issued a statement on 8 November stating that the Singapore government has decided to stop paying citizens who choose not to be vaccinated against covid from 8 December. The unvaccinated residents have to pay medical bills for covid treatment.

According to the “Washington Post” report, Singapore’s decision was based on the fact that most of the confirmed patients who used the intensive care unit had not been vaccinated. The statement emphasized that Singaporeans who can be vaccinated but refused to be vaccinated must pay medical expenses by themselves if they are infected.

The statement said that among the covid patients who entered the intensive care unit, those who had not been vaccinated accounted for the majority, which disproportionately increased the burden on Singapore's medical system. However, this government order excludes children under the age of 12 and people who cannot be vaccinated due to medical reasons. They will have the opportunity to receive treatment if necessary, and the cost will be borne by the state.

At present, the Singapore government pays medical expenses for martial arts for any Singapore citizens, permanent residents and holders of long-term work permits, except for those who are diagnosed shortly after returning to Singapore from abroad.

Singapore is one of the countries with the highest rate of vaccination in Wufei. 85% of the population has been fully vaccinated with two doses, and at least 14% of the population has been vaccinated with a booster shot. Under the delta variant virus, Singapore set a record for the highest number of infections in a single day on October 27. A total of 5,324 people were diagnosed that day.

On the 8th, the latest report added 2470 confirmed cases and 14 people died. According to a statement from the Ministry of Health of Singapore, the deceased were between 56 and 98 years old. They all had potential health problems during their lifetime. The country has a total of 511 deaths.

Against the background of high vaccine coverage, Singapore continues to expand the scope of application of "differentiated vaccinators", from those who have been vaccinated can only be used in restaurants, to those who have been fully vaccinated can enter shopping malls and attractions, and some interviews are also available. Only media reporters who have been fully vaccinated can participate. From January 2022, only those who have completed the vaccination or who have recovered can return to the workplace.

Zhang Zhan was nominated for news award in prison, U.S. urges CCP to release her

In a routine media briefing on 8 November, the U.S. State Department expressed deep concern about the deteriorating health of Chinese citizen journalist Zhang Zhan and urged the Beijing authorities to release people unconditionally. On the same day, Zhang Zhan was also nominated for the Press Freedom Award from the human rights group Reporters Without Borders.

US State Department spokesperson Ned Price told reporters on Monday (8 November) that after Zhang Zhan was sentenced in December last year, the United States and other diplomatic missions repeatedly arbitrarily detained and detained her. The abuse during the period expressed solemn concern. Today, "we once again urge China (the CCP) to release her immediately and unconditionally", and call on Beijing to respect the freedom of the press and the people's right to freely express their opinions.

At the same time, Zhang Zhan was nominated for the Press Freedom Award from the human rights group Reporters Without Borders in recognition of her courage.

Reporters Without Borders announced on the 8th the nominees for the 2021 Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Award. Journalists and media from 11 countries were nominated for a total of 3 awards, including the Courage Award, the Independent Award and the Impact Award. Zhang Zhan and 3 other female journalists were nominated for the Courage Award.

In the introduction of the nomination of Zhang Zhan, the organization without borders stated that despite constant threats from the authorities, Zhang Zhan uploaded a large number of video reports on YouTube, WeChat and Twitter in February 2020. The streets and hospitals of Wuhan, as well as the harassment of the families of people infected with the Chinese Communist Party virus (COVID-19), etc. Because it was widely shared on social media, Zhang Zhan's report became one of the main independent sources of information about the Wuhan epidemic situation at that time.

The Washington Post also supported Zhang Zhan with editorials. The editorial stated that Zhang Zhan’s arrest and imprisonment were part of China’s broader cover-up of the epidemic. In addition to Zhang Zhan, the eight Wuhan doctors who first exposed the epidemic were reprimanded. Chinese senior officials did not disclose the epidemic until January 20 last year. Officials in Shanghai continue to try to obstruct outside investigations of the origin of the epidemic and to blame the origin of the epidemic outside of China, etc., all in order to cover up the epidemic.

Zhang Zhan, 38, graduated from Southwestern University of Finance and Economics with a master's degree in finance and a former lawyer. She is a Christian and has been concerned about and participating in rights protection activities for a long time. In February 2020, Zhang Zhan went to Wuhan, where the covid outbreak occurred, to report on the epidemic. She was arrested in May, and there was no news for several months after that, and the authorities did not give any explanation until Zhang Zhan was sentenced to four years in prison in December.

The New York Times stated that Zhang Zhan’s report challenged the Chinese Communist government’s claim that its response to the epidemic was excellent and caring for the people. Last year, she was convicted of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble," a vague accusation often used against dissidents.

After being arrested, Zhang Zhan refused to plead guilty and went on a hunger strike to protest. The prison authorities “forced feeding” her.

Zhang Zhan’s brother Zhang Ju said on Twitter on 30 October 2021, “My mother came back after seeing her the day before yesterday and cried for a long time. Her face was withered and her eyes were full of sadness. Because Zhang Zhan looked dyingly ill and her figure was completely out of shape. She was completely out of shape. It seems that there is only God and the axioms she believes in my heart, and the others are completely ignored."

"Zhang Zhan is 177cm tall and currently weighs less than 40 kg. She is so stubborn. I think she may not live long. In the coming cold winter, if she does not persist in the past, I hope the world will remember her as she was. "

Zhang Zhan's family urged the Chinese authorities to approve her on parole for medical treatment. The outside world is also extremely worried that Zhang Zhan may continue to be tortured and ill-treated.

On 17 September, 45 NGOs including Reporters Without Borders and Amnesty International jointly sent a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping requesting the release of Zhang Zhan.

On 4 November, Reporters Without Borders issued an emergency statement calling on the Beijing authorities to immediately release Zhang Zhan. The statement emphasized that if Zhang Zhan is not released immediately, she will face life threats.

The "Human Rights Report 2020" released by the US State Department this year mentioned the Chinese authorities' retaliation against dissidents and suppressed the freedom of speech of dissidents such as the press and lawyers.

The report pointed out that four Chinese citizen journalists, including Zhang Zhan, Chen Qiushi, Li Zehua and Fang Bin, were forcibly disappeared and convicted for reporting the truth about the epidemic.

Japan has relaxed its border controls. From now on, it has conditions to allow foreign short-term business people, international students and technical intern trainees to enter, as long as they are fully vaccinated with one of the three vaccines approved by the country, including BNT, AZ, and Modena The entry quarantine period can be shortened, but Japan has not yet recognized Taiwan’s "little yellow card" vaccination certificate, so Chinese citizens still need to be quarantined for 14 days when entering Japan. Chen Shizhong, responded that the main reason is that Taiwan still needs to be quarantined at home for 14 days, and the two sides have no chance of mutual recognition.

According to the latest regulations of the Japanese government, if business people or workers staying in Japan within 3 months have been fully vaccinated with one of the 3 vaccines approved by Japan, the entry quarantine period can be shortened from 10 days to 3 days. If the foreign students and technical intern trainees staying in Japan for a long time have been vaccinated, the isolation period can be shortened from 14 days to 10 days.

Regarding Japan’s failure to recognize Taiwan's small yellow card vaccination certificate (Medigen vaccine), Chen Shizhong said that the biggest key is that Taiwan still needs to be quarantined at home for 14 days. There is no chance for mutual recognition between the two sides. He also emphasized that “we are still talking now, we will be positive. Fight."

As for the terms of the negotiations with Japan, and whether the quarantine time will be shortened for Japanese people entering Taiwan? Chen Shizhong said bluntly, "Everyone is stuck on this point!" Chen said that everyone hopes that the two sides can observe the epidemic situation on both sides through country-to-country, reciprocal reciprocity. We think there are still areas that are difficult to relax, but Japan this week It seems that much progress has been made, and the two sides continue to negotiate.

The media also asked whether Taiwan-Japan mutual certification will include high-end vaccines? Chen Shizhong responded that he has not yet talked about Medigen, and the current focus is still on mutual benefit.
