The paper stated that in 2017 and 2020, Chinese scholars used pangolin coronaviruses related to SARS-CoV-2 to cultivate two isolates, GX_P2V and pCoV14 GD01. Among them, the pCoV-GD01 isolate has high homology with SARS-CoV-2 and can infect golden hamsters and human ACE2 transgenic mice and cause disease. In contrast, although GX_P2V can also infect both species, it does not appear to cause overt disease.
The research team of this paper used virus cloning to add mutations to the early GX_P2V mutant strain GX_P2V (short_3UTR), creating a new mutant strain and named it GX_P2V C7.

The research team first infected four human ACE2 transgenic mice with GX_P2V C7. As a result, all four mice died within 7-8 days of infection. Starting from the 5th day, the mice lost weight. On the 7th day, the mice showed symptoms such as piloerection, hunchback, and slow movements, and their eyes began to turn white.
The research team infected eight more human ACE2 transgenic mice and dissected four on the third and sixth days of infection. Both autopsies detected large amounts of viral RNA in the brains, lungs, turbinates, eyes, and trachea of infected mice, but little or no viral RNA in other organs.
Additionally, viral RNA was detected in the brains of all 4 mice at autopsy on day 3. Abnormally high levels of viral RNA were detected in the brains of four mice dissected on day 6.
According to the paper, Chinese scholars transformed the non-pathogenic GX_P2V into a terrible virus that was 100% lethal to human ACE2 transgenic mice, and the virus attacks the brains of all infected mice.
