The 2024 Taiwan presidential election has just concluded. Nauru, a South Pacific diplomatic country, suddenly announced on 15 January 2024 that it would sever diplomatic relations with the Republic of China (ROC) for the second time, citing United Nations Resolution 2758 and the one-China principle. It is understood that the ROC has always been very friendly to Nauru. Even in 2006, when the only aircraft in Nauru was seized, the democratic Chinese government spent US$9.3 million (approximately NT$290 million) to help redeem it.

In his latest national address this morning, Nauru President David Adeang stated that he will abide by the "one-China principle" of the United Nations resolution and no longer regard Taiwan as a country and will instead recognize the People's Republic of China (PRC); the Nauru government In its latest statement, it stated that it would sever "diplomatic relations" with Taiwan from now on. It bluntly stated that the move was for the "best interests" of the country and its people. At the same time, it stated that it was seeking to fully restore diplomatic relations with CCP China.

It is understood that this is not the first time that Nauru, a South Pacific island country that pursues "international realism" in its foreign policy, has chosen to sever diplomatic relations with the Republic of China. Nauru severed diplomatic relations with ROC on 21 July 2002 and established diplomatic relations with CCP China. However, because the assistance promised by the Chinese Communist government was not implemented, it restored diplomatic relations with the Republic of China on 14 May 2005.

Taiwan used to be very friendly to Nauru, and the presidents of the two countries also visited each other. In the past, due to poor passenger capacity and poor operation of Nauru Airlines, the only aircraft in the country was impounded in 2005. The Republic of China government was generous for this as the government helped pay US$9.3 million for the redemption in 2006. Later, the Nauru government obtained a new Boeing 737 passenger plane through Taiwan's assistance to resume operations of Nauru Airlines.

ROC's current diplomatic relations include the Marshall Islands, Palau, and Tuvalu in the Asia-Pacific region, Eswatini in Africa, the Holy See in Europe, and Belize, Guatemala, Haiti, and Paraguay in Latin America and the Caribbean countries St. Christopher and Nevis Federation, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and The Grenadines.

Beijing’s diplomatic crackdown: It cannot change the fact that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are not affiliated with each other
In response to the government of the Republic of Nauru planning to sever diplomatic relations with my country under the inducement of CCP China, in order to safeguard national interests and dignity, the ROC has decided to terminate diplomatic relations with the Republic of Nauru starting from today. Presidential Office spokesperson Lin Yuchan said that at this moment when the world is wishing Taiwan a successful election, Beijing’s diplomatic suppression is a retaliation for democratic values and a blatant challenge to the international stable order. None of this can stop Taiwan from going global. Even the will of the two sides cannot change the fact that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are not subordinate to each other.

Lin Yuchan pointed out that based on cherishing traditional friendship and common democratic values, the ROC has been committed to the Nauru government's various tasks for many years to benefit the interests of the Nauru people and the overall national development. Under Beijing's inducement, the Nauru side has made actions that are not conducive to the people of both parties. The ROC expresses strong regret for its wrong decision on interests and regional stability; at a time when the world is wishing Taiwan a successful election, Beijing’s diplomatic suppression is a retaliation for democratic values and a blatant challenge to the international stable order.

Lin Yuchan said that for a long time, the Beijing authorities have continued to suppress the ROC's diplomatic space, including repeatedly making false promises, luring ROC’s friends with benefits, and compressing our country’s diplomatic space. However, none of this can hinder the will of the Taiwanese people to go global, nor can it change the fact that the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China are not affiliated with each other. In the future, Taiwan, the Republic of China, will continue to cooperate with countries with similar ideals and contribute to regional and global peace, stability, prosperity and development.

Nauru breaks off ties with ROC again. Kuomintang: The international status of the Republic of China cannot be denied

Just after the presidential election, Nauru broke off diplomatic relations with the ROC on the grounds of United Nations Resolution 2758 and the one-China principle. The Kuomintang said this afternoon that it cannot agree with or accept it, and Nauru has even harmed the 23 million people in Taiwan. sentiments, emphasizing that the international status of the Republic of China cannot be denied. The Kuomintang further appealed to the Chinese Communist authorities that this move would not help cross-strait dialogue. The existence of the Republic of China should be an asset rather than a liability for cross-strait peace, and the international space of the Republic of China should not be compressed at this time.

The Kuomintang stated that the international status of the Republic of China cannot be erased, and its responsibilities and obligations to the international community will not change in any way. The Kuomintang will stand together with all Chinese people. Facing the shrinking international space, it will work harder to safeguard sovereignty and dignity, and will participate more actively in the international community.

The Kuomintang pointed out that the Republic of China, founded by the Kuomintang, is the first democratic republic in Asia. It is the Kuomintang's unshirkable obligation and responsibility to safeguard the Constitution of the Republic of China, the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of China, and its international living space.

The Kuomintang also reminded the DPP government that the severance of diplomatic relations between Nauru and Nauru showed that the diplomatic system was not controlled in advance, and it was difficult to convince Chinese people that Lai Ching-te was ready to become president. After the election, U.S. President Biden made it clear that he "does not support Taiwan's independence." Under the leadership of the Democratic Progressive Party, there are many diplomatic difficulties. The Democratic Progressive Party should freeze the Taiwan independence party platform as soon as possible to safeguard the sovereignty of the Republic of China and protect Taiwan from harm. the correct approach.
