Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of Trump, together with Sergio Gor, Trump's incoming director of the Office of Presidential Personnel, and James Blair, his incoming deputy chief of staff for Legislative, Political and Public Affairs, arrived in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, for a private visit on Tuesday (7 January 2025). The main political parties expressed "very welcome" their presence. The move comes a day after the U.S. president-elect reiterated his interest in taking control of the strategically important world's largest island.

Trump Jr. flew on his father's "Trump One" private jet to visit Denmark's semi-autonomous island, the world's largest, on Tuesday. He posted photos of himself in Greenland on the X platform, praising "Greenland is so beautiful."

"He said hello to everyone in Greenland," he told local broadcaster KNR upon arrival.

Trump said on Monday that his son and some representatives were traveling to Greenland, reaffirming his interest in the vast Arctic land.

Kuno Fencker, a member of Greenland's parliament, said in an interview with CNN that both President-elect Trump and his eldest son Trump Jr. are "very welcome" to visit. Finke is the spokesman for Siumut, Greenland's second-largest political party. He emphasized that Greenland’s economy needs to be diversified, and he very much welcomes the Trump family and members of his government to visit Greenland, and may further deepen cooperation in the future.

Last month, Trump said it was "absolutely necessary" for the United States to control Greenland. "Make Greenland Great Again!" he posted on his "Truth Social" platform on Monday.

"The people would benefit greatly if it became part of our country," he wrote. Trump on Tuesday declined to rule out military or economic action to take over Panama and Greenland.

After Trump's comments, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told Danish broadcaster TV2, "The United States is our most important and closest ally... so I can't imagine we would get to that step."

Last month, after Trump expressed interest in Greenland again, Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede said the island was not for sale and emphasized "the fight for independence" in his New Year's speech.

Greenland, with a population of only 57,000, straddles the shortest route between Europe and North America and is of great strategic significance to the U.S. military and its ballistic missile early warning system. It has mineral, oil and gas wealth but has been slow to develop and its economy depends on Danish fishing and subsidies.

In an interview with the media, Finke pointed out that the Pituffik Space Base located in northern Greenland is very important to the national security of the United States and is also crucial to Canada and Greenland. He emphasized that protecting Greenland is the current priority and said that the people of Greenland should decide for themselves what kind of country it should be in the future and with whom it should cooperate.
