The report pointed out that since Xi Jinping came to power, the number of asylum seekers has increased at a record rate. The number of asylum seekers in 2022 alone is equivalent to the total number during Hu Jintao's 10-year term.

Independent commentator Du Zheng wrote in Taiwan's "Shangbao" today (22 January 2025) that many people choose to vote with their feet, but some are willing to stay in China and wait for an opportunity to start an uprising.

The Financial Times reported on Tuesday (21 January 2025) that U.S. President Donald Trump said that tariffs on CCP China may depend on an agreement on TikTok ownership. He signed an executive order to keep the popular short video platform online in the United States for 75 days.

Within hours of his inauguration on Monday, Trump postponed the deadline for TikTok's Chinese parent company ByteDance to sell its stake in the app or face a ban in the United States.

At the signing of the executive order, Trump said, "China makes a lot of things, makes mobile phones, all kinds of things, and no one complains about these, but they only pick TikTok to complain about."

When reporters asked why Trump's attitude towards TikTok had changed, Trump responded that it was because he also started using TikTok.

Trump pointed out that TikTok is popular among young people, and Trump won the favou of young voters in this election. The Republican Party is generally unpopular with young people.

Trump said that if TikTok continues to operate after the shutdown time, the United States "should be entitled to half of the shares" and that he would "definitely" impose tariffs on China if China refuses to reach an agreement. CCP China was one of three countries Trump threatened to impose tariffs on on his first day in office. On Monday, he said he might impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico from 1 February 2025.

However, he did not impose a full 60% tariff on Chinese imports as he promised during the campaign, which would have marked a new phase in his trade war with Beijing during his first term.

The move to delay tariffs on China appears to have provided a bargaining chip for the TikTok deal, the Financial Times said.

Trump spoke with Chinese Communist President Xi Jinping last Friday and said he raised the TikTok issue, although Beijing has not confirmed the discussion.

TikTok was temporarily unavailable to about 170 million U.S. users at midnight on Sunday, after the initial deadline set by the "divest or ban" law but service was restored hours later.

TikTok CEO Chou launched a charm offensive after Trump said during the campaign that he wanted to "save" TikTok.

Chou attended the inauguration alongside tech billionaires Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, sitting next to Trump's nominee for director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, and drawing criticism from some observers.

Many U.S. politicians and security officials believe the Chinese Communist government could use TikTok to gain access to Americans' personal information, which could facilitate espionage, and use the app's algorithms to spread propaganda. TikTok denies that Beijing has any control over the app. TikTok also said it was technically not feasible to transfer its shares within the time frame required by the law. However, Trump said that if TikTok continues to operate, the United States should get "half of what TikTok is worth," adding: "If I don't make this deal, it's worth nothing. If I make this deal, it could be worth a trillion dollars."

On Monday, the Chinese Communist Foreign Ministry said that any decision on TikTok's ownership should be "determined by the company itself, based on market principles."

In addition, Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, an American investment bank, told BNN Bloomberg on Monday that TikTok has become a valuable chip in the "big stakes game" between the United States and CCP China.
