The U.S. Congress once again issued a cross-house and cross-party resolution last Saturday (February 22) to counter the CCP's weaponization of "UN General Assembly Resolution 2758", criticizing the CCP for subverting the United Nations and expressing a firm support for Taiwan.
On the 22nd, bipartisan senators and representatives of the U.S. Congress proposed a resolution to oppose the CCP's weaponization of "UN General Assembly Resolution 2758" and confuse the U.S. policy toward Taiwan. The United States does not recognize the CCP's sovereignty claim over Taiwan. The CCP deceives the world, and the United States will not sit idly by.
The United Nations General Assembly, "Resolution 2758" in 1971, stated that the People's Republic of China is China's only representative in the United Nations. However, the CCP expanded its interpretation that Taiwan is part of China and does not need another representative. Blocking Taiwan from participating in international organizations.
Jim Risch, Republican chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Jeanne Shaheen, Democratic chief senator, proposed a similar resolution last year (2024), which countered the CCP's over-interpretation of UNGA Resolution 2758, indicating that the "one China policy" between the United States and its partners is different from the CCP's "one China principle".
This time, the cross-house version of the resolution of the U.S. Congress has expanded its lineup to 8 people, including Republican Senator Pete Ricketts, Democratic Senator Chris Coons, Republican Representative Young Kim, and Democratic Representative Ami Bera.
The 7-page resolution of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives pointed out that the CCP linked the "UNGA Resolution 2758" with the CCP's "one China principle" and claimed to the outside world that the "UNGA Resolution 2758" dealt with Taiwan's sovereignty. In fact, the "UNGA Resolution 2758" only involves the CCP's seat in the United Nations and has nothing to do with Taiwan's sovereignty.
The CCP has limited Taiwan's international space, and the U.S. Congress has expressed its toughness against China across houses and parties, reiterating the United States' consistent support for Taiwan.
