An unknown item on the luggage rack of Air Busan A321 caught fire

Report by : Gan Yung Chyan, KUCINTA SETIA

According to Yonhap News Agency, Air Busan's flight BX391 (Airbus A321) scheduled to fly to Hong Kong, China, caught fire at Gimhae Airport the day before takeoff. The initial speculation about the cause of the accident was that an unknown item on the luggage rack caught fire.

According to the Busan Fire Disaster Headquarters on 29 January 2025, the cabin crew saw sparks and smoke on the closed luggage rack in the kitchen behind the plane and called the tower to inform them that the "tethered aircraft was on fire." Passengers also confirmed that the luggage rack was on fire.

A passenger on the plane said in an interview with Yonhap News Agency that the luggage in the luggage rack made a "pop" sound and started to smoke after a while. The flight attendant asked the passengers to sit down and tried to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher, but the cabin was already filled with smoke and sparks flew out of the luggage rack. The person speculated that the "pop" sound might come from a power bank or other electronic products.

A couple sitting near the fire said that the flight attendant asked nearby passengers "what was in the luggage", but the smoke spread quickly soon after.
