U.S. President Trump said on 15 April 2025 that he would work to get "excellent" immigrants back to the United States and hoped to provide subsidies to illegal immigrants who voluntarily were deported. U.S. media pointed out that this was different from his usual tough immigration remarks.
AP News reported that Trump promised to implement large-scale deportations during his campaign. He said that the U.S. government is currently working to deport "murderers." But for others who are illegally in the United States, he said he would implement a "self-deportation plan."
Trump did not disclose specific details of the plan, including the timeline, but said the United States would provide air tickets and subsidies for immigrants.
"We'll give them a stipend. We'll give them some money and a plane ticket, and then we'll work with them -- if they're good -- if we want them back, we'll work with them to get them back as quickly as possible," Trump said.
Fox News interviewer Rachel Campos-Duffy, husband of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, showed Trump a clip about a Mexican man who she said entered the U.S. illegally more than 20 years ago and whose children are all citizens.
It is unclear if the man is currently in the country legally but Campos-Duffy said the man said he would support Trump even if he did not have the right to vote.
She played a clip of the man saying he agreed that if anyone commits a crime, they should be sent back -- including himself.
"I looked at this guy and I said, that's the guy we want to keep," Trump responded. "I might get criticized for saying that."
He then asked if the man should be deported, and answered his own question: "No, he didn't say that, which is good."
"I don't think he's in any danger," Trump said.
He also said he wants to help hotels and farms get the workers they need and recommend people to fill needed positions.
He said this would be "very comforting" for farmers.
He ultimately hopes that workers living in the United States illegally will be able to leave and return with legal permission but he did not outline any specific steps.
"We are implementing voluntary deportations, and we will give people peace of mind," he said.
He finally emphasized: "We will work with these people to get them back to our country legally."
