Myanmar's first four cases of Omicron infection revealed

Image : Web Screenshot

Myanmar confirmed its first four cases of the Omicron variant (Covi29) infection from returnees from Dubai, the junta-controlled Ministry of Health said on 28 December 2021, raising fears that the country is set to experience another devastating wave of covi.

The ministry said in a statement released on Tuesday night that 30 laboratory samples from covid returnees ere tested using Omicron Real Time PCR Testing and Genome Sequencing Testing. Omicron was found in four of the samples, according to results obtained on Tuesday.

Only one of the four infected people showed symptoms and all are in good condition. “All four were monitored at the treatment center and discharged from the treatment center due to good health,” the ministry’s statement said.

Myanmar has already experienced a third wave of COVID-19, after the military regime relaxed restrictions to demonstrate to the outside world that the country is back to normal after the junta’s February coup. With the public healthcare system in chaos following the military takeover, the last coronavirus outbreak saw daily record death tolls.

Previous covid outbreaks since March 2020, when the virus was first detected in Myanmar, occurred under the now ousted civilian government and caused far fewer fatalities as the healthcare system was functioning and adequate drugs and care could be provided to covid patients.

187 new covid cases were reported over the past 24 hours in Myanmar with three new deaths from the disease.

WHO: Omicron plus Delta variants may lead to an epidemic tsunami!

World Health Organization (WHO) Secretary General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus  is worried about Omicron and Delta variants joining forces to show off, which may lead to a surge of confirmed diseases in a "tsunami."

The WHO pointed out that the number of confirmed covid cases worldwide increased by 11% last week.

Omicron and Delta variants of SARS-CoV-2 are "dual threats", which are causing the number of confirmed diagnoses to reach a new high, and the number of hospitalizations and deaths soars.

The United States and France both reported today that the number of diagnoses in a single day reached a new high.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated at the press conference, "I am very worried that the more infectious Omicron variant is spreading at the same time as the Delta variant, which will cause a surge of diseases in a tsunami." He mentioned the pandemic is continuing to burden the exhausted medical staff, and the health system is on the verge of collapse.

President Tsai Ing-wen also posted an article to support Hong Kong last night.

He Yunshi also has a lot of popularity in Taiwan but such things have happened. Half of the interview was directly splashed with red paint. Hong Kong is getting more aggressive in suppressing democracy and freedom

Legislator Lin Changzuo said, "The Hong Kong government's suppression of democracy and freedom is becoming more and more fierce."

Legislator Wang Wanyu said, "The CCP's behavior is to tell everyone that anyone who takes action against resistance or has intentions won't be let off.” The legislators jumped out of their support one after another, let alone Hong Kong people who moved to Taiwan.

Former Radio Hong Kong host (in Taiwan and Hong Kong) Zeng Zhihao said, "The Hong Kong government wants the so-called extermination. Some disobedient and truth-speaking media, he seems to be dealing with the Apple Daily, asking him to disappear."

The Position News established in 2014 uses "Declaration of position, no concealment, no evasion, and persistence in reporting. "Truth" is the supreme principle. In 2020, reporters were sent to Taiwan to cover the presidential election. However, since the reporting stance is closer to that of the Hong Kong democrats, the interpretation has become a thorny issue for the Hong Kong government.

Guangxi's epidemic prevention "Parade the Streets" CCP media rarely spilled cold water (Video)

Image : On 21 December 2021, people in Guangxi who violated epidemic prevention regulations were paraded to the public. Public opinion condemned this as a "reappearance of the Cultural Revolution," and the official media rarely poured cold water on the parade. (Video screenshot)

A few days ago, a certain place in Guangxi paraded people who violated epidemic prevention regulations, and public opinion condemned this as a "reproduction of the Cultural Revolution." The Chinese Communist Party’s official media also rarely splashed cold water, saying that even for epidemic prevention, it is not appropriate to "parade."

According to a report by the Jingxirong Media Center, Tunpan Township, in the city of Jingxi, Guangxi Province, held a disciplinary meeting on 21 November. Four people who interfered with epidemic prevention and control were imposed on-site punishment, and four people were accused of transporting others across the border.

The video released by the Jingxirong Media Center showed that four persons under punishment were escorted by two policemen wearing protective clothing, wearing protective clothing, wearing masks, unable to see their faces, and with their own headshots on their chests.  "Parade the streets to show the crowd."

There is a row of police officers standing guard on each side of the road, and many people stand behind the police officers and watch. Subsequently, 4 people were escorted to the scene of the disciplinary committee to accept public punishment, and a large number of citizens watched.

This video was widely circulated on social media and was considered a reappearance of the Cultural Revolution. Some netizens said: "The Cultural Revolution is not over." (Click to watch the video)

According to the video, the local government’s disciplinary measures also include posting disciplinary notices at the residences of four people, exposing them through multiple channels, and freezing their bank accounts.

This is not the first time that Jingxi has "paraded the public". In August this year, a video released on the official website of the Jingxi City Government also contained images of "the public parade."

The video of Jingxi "parading the streets" triggered public condemnation. The Jingxi City Public Security Bureau and the Anning Township Government responded that this was a punishment as required and there was no inappropriateness.

However, the Beijing News, which has an official background, published commentary articles, which rarely poured cold water on this kind of "parade".

The article said that from the perspective of video dissemination effects, it is undoubtedly a realistic version of "parade." However, even for the prevention of the epidemic, the "parade" cannot be allowed to appear again.

In fact, Jingxi is not the first city to implement the measures of "walking in the streets".

Locals paraded on the street for playing mahjong in Chongqing

In February 2020, similar incidents occurred at the beginning of the covid outbreak. At that time, four people in Hexing Township, Chongqing, were playing mahjong. The local town government claimed, "This is not called a parade, it is a warning."

The video of 4 people carrying the mahjong board game street was circulated on social media. Netizens said, "The Cultural Revolution has never been far away from China. Chongqing allowed four people to carry the Mahjong board game street. There is no concept of human rights, not to mention, even the most basic society. The rule of law is ignored."

"More than fifty years have passed. Criticism, parade, shaved hair... These have become cultural genes under the rule of the Communist Party of China, which have been passed on from generation to generation." Hanging out signs to parade...let the world once again witness what the Cultural Revolution is like!"

The harsh sirens of the accompanying police car pierced the night sky, and the atmosphere was better than the street actions of the Red Guards and rebels.

New mRNA vaccine can effectively prevent ticks from spreading diseases

Reporter : Li Shaowei / Editor : Ye Ziwei / https://www.epochtimes.com/gb/21/12/30/n13468185.htm

Yale University researchers have invented a new vaccine that can effectively reduce the probability of infection of various diseases after a tick bite. Including Lyme disease.

At least 40,000 people are diagnosed with Lyme disease in the United States each year, but researchers say that the actual number of infections is about ten times this number. Ticks not only spread Lyme disease, but also other diseases.

This vaccine uses the mRNA technology used in the recent two years for the covi vaccine. It does not target specific pathogens but targets the saliva of ticks, allowing the host's skin to encounter tick saliva. The components of the worm react quickly to attract the attention of the host, thereby shortening the time for the ticks to suck blood and transmit pathogens on the host.

Erol Fikrig, a professor of infectious diseases at Yale School of Medicine, one of the lead authors of this study, said, “Ticks can transmit a variety of diseases. This vaccine does not work against specific pathogens and helps achieve immunity to diseases. It can be used with other traditional types of vaccines against specific pathogens to provide better protection."

The black leg tick (Ixodes scapularis) is particularly prone to spreading Lyme disease, and its saliva contains a variety of proteins. This study identified 19 different proteins among them. Researchers analyzed the mRNAs that produce all these 19 proteins, just like the study of the covi vaccine analyzes the mRNAs that produce the covi protein.

Researchers inject these vaccines into guinea pigs and conduct multiple experiments to compare them with guinea pigs that have not been vaccinated. After a guinea pig injected with this vaccine was bitten by a tick, the bitten site immediately showed redness.

Researchers found that as long as the ticks were removed immediately after the redness appeared, all guinea pigs that were bitten were not infected with Lyme disease. In contrast, half of the guinea pigs in the unvaccinated group were infected with the Lyme disease pathogen even if the ticks were removed immediately after being bitten.

In another experiment, both groups of guinea pigs were constantly bitten by a tick without removing it. The results showed that all vaccinated guinea pigs were not infected; however, 60% of guinea pigs that were not vaccinated were infected.

In another experiment, two groups of guinea pigs were continuously bitten by three ticks. The results showed that the protective power of the vaccine was weakened.

In addition, the researchers found that the ability of ticks to suck blood on vaccinated guinea pigs is weakened, and it is also easier to leave the host automatically. Fikrig said, "This vaccine improves the host's ability to perceive a tick bite. After being bitten, the host feels similar to being bitten by a mosquito. Once people feel bitten by a mosquito, they will slap the bite. (Slap mosquitoes to death or drive them away.) Part of the role of this vaccine is to make the host feel itchy, thereby driving away the ticks and reducing the chance of infection."

However the researchers found that this vaccine did not work in mice. This may be related to the skin structure of mice or the long-term and strong symbiotic relationship between mice and ticks. The researchers said that regardless of the reason, at least the structure of human skin is closer to that of guinea pigs, and clinical trials are needed in the future to confirm whether this vaccine can protect the human body.

The study was published in the journal Science Translational Medicine on 17 November 2021.

Zhejiang's first fifth freedom international cargo route opens. Hangzhou Airport opens "Transnational Public Transport" cargo mode

Image : CARNOC

On 30 December 2021, Hangzhou Airport ushered in a new international cargo route: New York-Hangzhou-Incheon-New York. This route is the first fifth-freedom all-cargo route successfully introduced by Zhejiang Province. This indicates that Hangzhou has become a city with the fifth freedom rights in the air transportation market, and Hangzhou Airport has opened the "transnational public transport" cargo mode.

At 9.42 am that day, the all-cargo flight 5Y551 from New York, USA, landed at Hangzhou Airport. After two hours of loading and unloading, 83.75 tons of e-commerce goods will take off from Hangzhou Airport, 1.64 tons of goods will go to Incheon, and 82.11 tons of goods will go to New York, the United States.  The route is executed by SF International chartering the capacity of Atlas Air, using Boeing 747-400F all-cargo aircraft. The flight will start once a week at the beginning, and the number of flights will be gradually increased in the later period. What is different from the past is that this route uses Hangzhou Airport as a transit point to realize the three connections of Hangzhou, New York and Seoul through the use of the fifth international traffic rights (referred to as the fifth traffic rights) between China, the United States and South Korea on free loading and unloading of cargo between airports and flexible distribution of cargo.

The fifth traffic right, the right of access to a third country, refers to the right of a country’s airlines to stop and carry passengers and cargo in a third country while operating an international route. Ordinary international routes generally operate between two countries. Once the fifth freedom rights are opened, it means that airlines can carry passengers and cargo in a third country, realizing the effect of free transportation between the three countries. Therefore, the fifth freedom rights are hailed by the aviation industry as the "richest and most economically significant" freedom rights, and it is also an important indicator of measuring the level of regional opening up and the business environment.

South Korea's antitrust agency conditionally approves the acquisition of Asiana Airlines by Korean Air

Image : Researcher's Picture

According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea’s anti-monopoly law enforcement agency, the “Fair Trading Commission” (hereinafter referred to as the “Justice Commission”) included the review report on Korean Air’s acquisition of Asiana Airlines on the agenda of the meeting on 29 December 2021, and initially decided to conditionally approve the merger of the two airlines.

Korean Air signed an agreement to acquire 63.88% of Asiana Airlines in November 2021, and reported the acquisition to the Justice Committee in January 2021. The Justice Commission divided about 250 routes operated by 5 companies, including two airlines and its subsidiaries, into 119 markets (87 for passenger transport, 26 for cargo, and 6 others), and the merger of the two airlines' impact on competition in these markets will be analyzed. The Justice Committee believes that after the merger of the two airlines, the 10 routes that it will exclusively operate, including Incheon to Los Angeles, Incheon to New York, and Incheon to Zhangjiajie, as well as other routes, will have problems restricting competition.

Therefore, the Justice Committee initially decided to conditionally approve the acquisition of Asiana Airlines by Korean Air. The Justice Committee recommended that the two airlines reduce their airport take-off and landing time slots (SLOT), and give up the right to operate some routes that have not yet applied the "Open Skies Treaty". For some routes where the above-mentioned measures are difficult to work, the Justice Committee proposed restrictions on the increase in shipping fees, and prohibition on the reduction of routes and services.

The Justice Committee will hold a plenary meeting at the end of January 2022 after accepting the opinions of the two airlines on the review report to review the acquisition. However, even if the Justice Committee finally decides to approve Korean Air's acquisition of Asiana Airlines, whether the two companies can merge depends on the results of the deliberation of the anti-monopoly law enforcement agencies of seven overseas countries. The United States, the European Union, China, Japan, the United Kingdom, Singapore and Australia are reviewing the acquisition. The acquisition has been approved in Malaysia and Thailand.
