Nicole Shanahan, the running mate of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the independent presidential candidate of the United States in 2024, said that Kennedy is considering withdrawing from the race and "joining forces" with the Republican presidential nominee and former President Trump.
In an interview posted online on Tuesday (20 August 2024), Kennedy Jr.'s running mate said that as independent candidates, she and Kennedy Jr. may draw away Trump's potential voters and thus build a strong foundation for the Democratic president nominee Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz and have cleared the way for Harris-Walz to win the November election.
Shanahan told a podcast by Los Angeles media company Impact Theory: "We have two options under consideration. One is to stay and form a new party, but we risk the loss to Harris and Waltz. "The risk of being elected president is that we took votes from Trump, or we somehow managed to take more votes from Trump."
Shanahan went on to reveal to her interviewer, Tom Bilyeu, another option for the JFK campaign: "Or we just walk away now and join forces with Donald Trump and, you know, we break away from the campaign, and explain to our base voters why we made this decision.”
"It's not easy, it's not an easy decision to make," the female lawyer and entrepreneur added.
Bilyeu posted on the social media platform X that the interview was recorded on Monday.
Kennedy Jr. also hinted at his choice in an X post on Tuesday. He wrote, "As always, I am willing to speak with leaders of any political party to advance the goals I have worked for for 40 years in my career and in this campaign".
The 70-year-old Kennedy announced in October 2023 that he would withdraw from the Democratic primary and continue to run for president as an independent candidate. In late March 2024, he announced his choice of 38-year-old Shanahan as his running mate, making the San Francisco female lawyer the first Chinese-American vice presidential candidate in the United States.
Kennedy Jr. is the son of former U.S. Attorney General and U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy. When Robert F. Kennedy was shot and killed in 1968, the then-senator was running for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Kennedy Jr. is also the nephew of John F. Kennedy, the former president who was assassinated in 1963.
After Trump suffered an assassination attempt at a July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, he called for Secret Service protection for independent presidential candidate JFK Jr. given the family's history, something President Joe Biden later approved and met this requirement.

Former U.S. President Trump said late on Monday (19 August 2024) that in view of the fact that Kamala Harris’ campaign team has made it clear that the vice president will not participate in Fox News debate, so he will participate in a televised town hall hosted by Fox News next month.
Trump posted a message on his "Truth Social" saying, "Instead of the (scheduled) September 4th debate, I have agreed to participate in a debate moderated by Sean Hannity. FOX Town Hall event will be held in the great state of Pennsylvania, details to be announced soon!"

Republican presidential candidate and former President Trump said on Monday (19 August 2024) that if he wins the U.S. general election in November, he will consider Tesla CEO Elon Musk to serve as a cabinet member or adviser.
As the Democratic Party holds its national convention in Chicago, Trump embarks on a tour of battleground states this week, hoping to boost his momentum and influence in key constituencies.
On Monday, after a campaign event in York, Pennsylvania, Trump told Reuters that he would consider appointing Musk to a key position in the government.
Asked whether Musk might be considered for a Cabinet or advisory role, Trump said, "He's a very smart man. If he would, of course I would consider it. He's a brilliant man."
In the same interview, Trump also said he would be open to revoking the $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit. This is an important policy of the Biden administration to encourage the production and sales of electric vehicles.
During his presidency, Trump attempted to repeal the electric vehicle tax credit before President Joe Biden expanded the policy in 2022 as part of his push to combat climate change.
"I'm not making any decisions about it right now," Trump said of the electric vehicle tax credit. "I'm a big fan of electric vehicles, but I also like gas vehicles and hybrids and anything else. The car appeared."

Most polls show that Pennsylvania has become one of the most important states in the presidential election, with Kamala and Trump neck and neck.

U.S. intelligence officials confirmed that the Iranian regime recently attempted to conduct cyber attacks on the Trump campaign with the purpose of influencing the U.S. election, destroying people's confidence in the democratic system.
The FBI, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) said in a joint statement (link) on Monday (August 19) that Iran is targeting the bipartisan presidential campaign. The team carried out the cyberattack with the goal of "stoking discord and undermining confidence in our democratic institutions."
Earlier this month, the Trump campaign said its internal communications had been hacked by foreign hackers, pointing the finger at Iran. According to reports, the Republican campaign received a spear phishing email, which is an email designed to appear trustworthy in order to get the target to click on a malicious link. It remains unclear whether any information was stolen during the attack. Trump said the hackers only obtained public information.
The FBI later announced that it was investigating the incident.
Although the Iranian government has denied launching cyberattacks, the U.S. intelligence agencies said in a statement on Monday: "We have observed increasingly aggressive Iranian activities during this election cycle, particularly influence operations targeting the American public and targeting Cyber attacks on presidential campaigns.”
"This includes the recently reported intrusion into former President Trump's campaign, which the intelligence community believes was carried out by Iran," the statement said.
"The intelligence community is convinced that Iran has used social engineering and other means to attempt to gain access to individuals directly involved in the presidential campaigns of both parties." Such activities...are aimed at influencing the U.S. election process," the U.S. intelligence agency said.
Google also said last week that the same Iranian hackers had tried to hack into the Biden campaign before President Joe Biden dropped out of the race but it was unclear whether they had been breached.
Kamala's camp also confirmed last week that the team was the target of a spear phishing attack, but the attack was unsuccessful.
In a statement on Monday, U.S. intelligence agencies said the tactic was "not new," noting that Russia and Iran had used similar tactics in previous U.S. elections.
"Protecting election integrity from foreign influence or interference is our top priority," U.S. intelligence officials said, saying they will continue to remain vigilant to identify and respond to such threats.
