Rowena He, a senior researcher at the University of Texas at Austin and former associate professor of history at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, spoke at the hearing and said that the CCP’s biggest distortion of history is that “the CCP tells the world that the CCP is China.” However, the CCP is not China, and the CCP cannot represent the Chinese people.”
"The Chinese Communist Party has hijacked China and Chinese people."
He Xiaoqing said that generation after generation of Chinese people have grown up and lived in the fear created by the CCP.
She said, "When Mao Zedong passed away, my parents closed the doors and windows to celebrate on the first night. They drank together and seemed very happy. However, the next morning, they took me to a public memorial place. Everyone is crying."
"As a little girl at the time, I was very confused by the contrasting emotions displayed by adults."
During the June Fourth Movement in 1989, He Xiaoqing's teacher told her to take off the black armband on her arm (used to commemorate the students who died), otherwise "no one can protect you."
In 1989, He Xiaoqing was 17 years old. She said she had only two choices, lie or live. She chose to lie, otherwise she would not have been able to attend today's hearing.
She said, "Two generations of our family have not been allowed to express basic human emotions, sadness and joy."
"The Chinese Communist Party Revises History Textbooks"
He Xiaoqing said that in 1989, after the mass purges and arrests of the Tiananmen Movement, the CCP began to "propaganda nationalism."
She said, "This is a very well-planned campaign, an educational campaign. They (the Chinese Communist Party) changed the history textbooks, they changed the political textbooks to emphasize that China was a victim under the West and Japan. And then they made up a story Stories, not truth. They create narratives that military repression is necessary for stability and the rise of China. In the newspapers, they (the Chinese Communist Party) are basically saying that they are doing this for you (the people). Killing these people is so that China can rise and China can be stable."
She said that the CCP starved to death 36 million Chinese people, but the CCP used three years of natural disasters to cover up the "Great Famine". The CCP was still exporting grain at that time.
"The CCP covered up all the lies," she said, "and created a rupture in the historical memory of generations."
Uighurs: China commits linguistic and cultural genocide
Rishat Abbas, president of the Uyghur International College, said that in addition to genocide, the CCP has also committed "linguistic and cultural genocide" against the Uyghurs. Since 2017, the Chinese Communist government has imprisoned one million ethnic Uighurs and other Turkic people in concentration camps.
Abbas said the CCP suppresses the use of the Uyghur language and has eliminated the teaching of Uyghur in schools.
He believes that the CCP’s ultimate goal is to eliminate this ethnic minority’s identity.
Tibetans: China implements cultural assimilation
Geshe Lobsang Monlam, founder of the Monlam Tibetan IT Research Center, said, "The cultural assimilation policy implemented by the Chinese Communist Party against Tibetans in Tibet is systematically destroying the Tibetan language and Tibetan cultural identity."
He gave an example, "The mandatory use of Mandarin as the main language of instruction in schools is one example."
"An estimated 80 percent of Tibetan children are placed in state-run boarding schools that prioritize Mandarin, effectively cutting them off from their traditional culture."
Southern Mongolians: China cancels Mongolian language teaching
Temulun Togochog, an American-born youth activist from Southern Mongolia, said "Since 2020, the Chinese government has effectively eliminated Mongolian in the (Southern Mongolian) education system, replacing it with Chinese as the only language of instruction."
"One of the most important aspects of Mongolian culture is nomadism. According to official Chinese statistics, more than 246,000 nomadic families have been forcibly removed from the countryside and moved to cities. This has clearly erased the Mongolian lifestyle, culture and identity."
Congressman: Preserving the memory and culture of the Chinese people is crucial

CECC Chairman and Senior Congressman Christopher Smith said that CECC’s political prisoner database is second to none in the world.
He said, "We believe we are working on a great project. This project is not only to protect innocent people from the brutal persecution of the Chinese Communist Party... but also to preserve memory, to preserve the memory of the Chinese people from being distorted by the Chinese Communist Party's propaganda, Preserve the memory of ethnic minorities whose unique cultural, linguistic and religious identities are threatened by racial discrimination, and most importantly, preserve the memory of individuals whom the Chinese Communist Party seeks to eliminate.”
He said that the CECC’s annual report is also to track, expose and seek to stop the Chinese Communist Party’s human rights violations.
"Preserving memories is critical for people to maintain their culture and identity," said CECC co-chairman Senator Jeff Merkley.

He said that George Orwell famously said, "Whoever controls the past controls the future; whoever controls the present controls the past." And "the Chinese Communist Party is erasing and modifying history to suit its interests."
"Both individual and collective memory are critical to identity and the realization of the cultural rights of all peoples," said CECC member and senior Congressman James McGovern.
"The stories we tell, the songs we sing, the writing, the music - all of these are our expressions and the way we record our shared history and pass on our knowledge and understanding of the world to future generations."
"Without memory, victims' rights to truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence cannot be realized."
Deputy Secretary of State: China’s suppression of people intensifies
Uzra Zeya, Under Secretary of State for Civil Security, Democracy, and Human Rights of the U.S. State Department, said that as this hearing was ongoing, “the Chinese Communist Party continues its genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang and is corrupting Hong Kong. fundamental freedoms, suppressing Tibetans’ unique cultural, religious and linguistic identity, and continuing human rights violations across the country."
"As Secretary Blinken pointed out, the Chinese Communist Party has not only intensified its repression of the people at home, but has also become more aggressive overseas."
She said, "The U.S. government pays priority attention and takes action to combat the CCP's infringements."
She revealed that the U.S. government submitted 15 issues related to the CCP at the United Nations Human Rights Council in January this year, including multiple core human rights issues.
