On 2 December 2024, the Special Subcommittee on COVID-19 (covid) Pandemic Affairs (SSCP) under the U.S. House Oversight Committee published a 520-page final report after concluding a nearly two-year investigation. The report will serve as a reference for Congress, the executive branch, and the private sector to prepare for future pandemics.
The report covers a wide range of issues related to COVID-19, including the source of the virus, vaccination, public health guidance, state-level actions, and the use of rescue funds. The key points of the report include: the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded the gain-of-function research of the Wuhan laboratory; there are five strong evidences to support that COVID-19 is most likely from a laboratory in Wuhan, China, and COVID caused by laboratory leaks is "not a conspiracy theory"; EcoHealth Alliance and Dr. Peter Daszak "should never" accept taxpayer funding.
The report is critical of many mitigation measures taken by the U.S. authorities in the early stages of the epidemic, arguing that masks and mask enforcement measures "failed to effectively control the spread of COVID-19"; for the six-foot social distance guidelines, the report criticized them for "lack of scientific support" and that public health officials have lost the trust of the people. In addition, the report concluded that the lockdown measures "did more harm than good" to the economy, the overall health of the American people, and the development of children; President Trump's early international travel restrictions were considered to have saved lives, etc.
This report is a heavy blow to the CCP, which has been lying about the COVID-19 epidemic. In addition to worrying about the high tariffs imposed by Trump after he takes office in January 2025, the CCP should also worry about the Trump administration holding the CCP accountable for leaking and spreading the new coronavirus to the world, especially after the release of this report.
In fact, as early as 2020, during his first term, Trump had been expressing his attitude of holding the CCP accountable. On 22 September 2020, Trump first mentioned the new coronavirus issue when he delivered a video speech at the 75th United Nations General Assembly. He said that the United States "has fought a fierce battle with the invisible enemy of the Chinese virus", "In our pursuit of this bright future, we must hold accountable the country that released this plague to the world-China (CCP)", and "The United Nations must hold China (CCP) accountable for its actions", and he also listed irrefutable evidence of why the CCP should be held responsible.
On 9 September 2020, Trump mentioned for the first time that "China (CCP) released something they shouldn't have released." It came from Wuhan and spread to the world, bringing great disaster to the United States. On 7 September, Trump said at a press conference, "We will hold China (CCP) accountable for allowing the virus to spread around the world."
On 23 August, on the eve of the Republican National Convention, Trump's re-election campaign announced Trump's second-term policy agenda, and the top ten themes included eradicating COVID-19. Trump made it clear that he would "hold the CCP fully responsible for the spread of the disease around the world" during his second term.
The reason why Trump is so sure to hold the CCP accountable is that he has strong evidence. The report just released provides a solid foundation for the Trump administration to hold the CCP accountable. Indeed, for covid, the CCP virus that has killed millions of Americans and infected countless people, no matter how much the CCP argues and shirks responsibility in the face of facts, it will be useless.
Since Trump has long stated that he will hold the CCP accountable in his second term, although this term is four years late, which temporarily relieves the CCP, will Trump forget it given his character? I'm afraid not.
In addition, the Trump administration's pursuit of the CCP also has a strong public opinion base. In 2020, in an online poll conducted by then-Vice President Kamala Harris, 90% of Republicans and 67% of Democrats believed that the Chinese government should be held responsible for the spread of covid.
What specific measures will be taken to hold the CCP accountable? On 17 December 2021, Trump said in an interview with Fox News that China (Chinese Communist Party) has destroyed the entire world and should pay $60 trillion in compensation for the COVID-19 epidemic. Obviously, from an economic perspective, such a huge amount of compensation is somewhat unimaginable. Even if the CCP is willing, it cannot pay tens of trillions of dollars in compensation, but Trump's intention should not be the specific amount of compensation, but to show his determination to defend the rights and interests of Americans and let the CCP bear the necessary consequences.
So, what actions will Trump take after he takes office as president next January? On the one hand, with Republicans in control of both the House and Senate, the COVID-19 Victims Complaints Act will likely pass, which would strip China of its sovereign immunity and provide for private litigation against China’s arbitrary actions, such as silencing whistleblowers to conceal important information about the coronavirus.
The bill would also allow courts to freeze the assets of the Chinese government so that victims can obtain compensation. Not only that, the bill proposes the establishment of a special COVID-19 Victims Complaints Task Force in the State Department to conduct an international investigation into Beijing’s shortcomings in handling the pandemic, including using the World Health Organization to cover up its lies. If the Chinese Communist regime resists international claims, the United States will lead international forces to seek compensation from the Chinese Communist government, including by preparing a plan to force Beijing to provide compensation.
In addition, Congress may also pass the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, requiring the Chinese authorities to repay $1.6 trillion in special treasury bonds, etc.
Undoubtedly, once the new U.S. administration takes office and opens the door to accountability, it will definitely hurt the Chinese Communist Party.
