A power bank caught fire at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Malaysia recently.
A power bank in a passenger's backpack suddenly caught fire and emitted smoke, filling the area with smoke. Airport staff responded quickly and extinguished the fire.
According to reports from Malaysia's China Press and New Straits Times, the incident occurred at approximately 11.06 am local time on 26 July 2026 at Terminal 2 of KLIA. Video footage shows a black backpack, presumably placed on the ground by a passenger, suddenly emitting a large amount of white smoke, causing the surrounding area to fill with smoke and startling nearby passengers who quickly moved away.
Upon discovering the anomaly, airport staff immediately rushed to the scene and used fire extinguishers to spray the backpack. Upon inspection, staff confirmed that the source of the smoke was a power bank. KLIA management subsequently issued a statement saying that the incident was an emergency, causing no injuries or damage to airport facilities, and that overall airport operations were unaffected.
The airport also reminded passengers to properly store and use power banks and to strictly adhere to the safety guidelines provided by the manufacturers. If any damage, bulging, or abnormal overheating is found in the equipment, it should be stopped immediately.
