The highly spreading Omicron variant virus (Covi29) has invaded Beijing. Whether the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics can be successfully held will be the focus of the world. In order to host the Winter Olympics, the Chinese authorities will adopt the most severe "bubble-style" lockdown measures to date. The outside world believes that this may be the most unpleasant event in Olympic history.

"Double Os" parallel Beijing is highly nervous
The 2022 Winter Olympics will open on 4 February 2022 (Friday) and close on 20 February 2022 (Sunday). The entire event will be held in the Beijing Division, Yanqing Division and Zhangjiakou Division. The subsequent Paralympic Games will be held for 10 days from 4 to 13 March 2022.
Unfortunately, the highly contagious Covi29 is spreading rapidly in Tianjin, 126 km from Beijing. On 12 January, the Tianjin authorities ordered the city to take an emergency half-day holiday from the afternoon of the same day, and the 14 million residents started the second round of nucleic acid testing.

Beijing ushers in "Double Os" - Omicron and Olympics
Just when the Beijing authorities were highly nervous and took a stance of strict defense, Omicron immediately captured Beijing. The outside world joked that Beijing ushered in the "double Olympics" - Omicron and the Olympics.
The Beijing Municipal Health Commission (hereinafter referred to as the Health Commission) publicly announced that there were local confirmed cases on 15 January; confirmed cases and asymptomatic infections were introduced from abroad. According to the report, the local confirmed case lives in Boya West Park, Shangdi Street, Haidian District, and reported a positive nucleic acid test result on 15 January, and has been transferred to a designated hospital for isolation and treatment.

Inbound Covi29 cases in Beijing are Chinese
The confirmed cases from abroad are of Chinese nationality. They arrived at Beijing Capital Airport from Germany on 11 January. After the customs undergoes health screening and nucleic acid testing, they are sent to a centralized isolation hotel through closed-loop management. The nucleic acid test result was reported to be positive on 14 January, and he was transferred to a designated hospital on 15 January.
On 18 January, Beijing held the 268th press conference on covid prevention and control. The Beijing CDC reported that from 12 am on 17 to 17 January 2022, Beijing added new confirmed cases of novel coronavirus pneumonia (covid) and positive nucleic acid tests, and there were new cases in Haidian District and Chaoyang District.
According to the itinerary, confirmed case 1 is the mother who reported the confirmed case on 15 January; confirmed case 2 is also a colleague on the same floor of the unit who reported the confirmed case on 15 January. The address of the work unit is Haidian New Technology Building.

Covi-positive cases in Chaoyang District cast shadows over Beijing Winter Olympics
Among them, the most feared cases by the CCP are those who tested positive for nucleic acid in Chaoyang District. In the morning of 20 January, the man who was announced as a confirmed case went to Beijing to work in November 2021. He developed cold symptoms on 14 January, and underwent a nucleic acid test at the community health service center on 17 January; he passed through Beijing on 18 January. The CDC laboratory review result was positive, and the Delta variant strain-specific mutation site was detected at the same time.
Although the CCP has been concealing the truth, the outside world has never been able to know the true number of infected people in China but only the officially announced cases will undoubtedly cast a shadow over the upcoming Beijing Winter Olympics on 4 February 2022.
In fact, the CCP authorities have long anticipated this possibility. Therefore, before there is no sign that the highest authorities intend to suspend or apply for a postponement of the Winter Olympics, the outside world sees Beijing adopting the most stringent competition rules to date, that is, the whole-area closed-loop "bubble" management.
News (6)
The closed-loop "bubble" management involves sale and flight suspensions
On 4 January 2022, Beijing started the trial operation of closed-loop management during the competition, and everything will be carried out in an isolated "big bubble". As Beijing is facing a big enemy, the official order is to strictly prevent risk personnel from entering Beijing through a third place, and the city where the case is located will suspend flights, suspend sales, and suspend the "three stop" measures for entering Beijing.
As of this writing, there have been local outbreaks of Covi29 in 10 Chinese cities.

Beijing locks guests in "bubble concentration camp"
Throughout the Olympics, athletes, support staff, volunteers and the media will all be in a so-called "closed loop" -- or "bubble" management -- to limit the spread of infection.
This "closed loop" does not isolate a huge area in Beijing, but consists of countless mini "bubbles". People arriving in China by air will remain in a closed loop from the time the plane landed in Beijing to the time they left by plane.
During the Winter Olympics, all personnel cannot leave the closed loop. The closed loop also includes the movement of people between the accommodation area and the three competition areas 180 kilometers apart.
Regarding the number of people enclosed in the bubble, Agence France-Presse quoted the Chinese state media as an estimate that there will be about 3,000 athletes participating and 10,000 media personnel participating in the report.
There are also a large number of staff supporting the operation of the Winter Olympics venues, including translators, cleaning, hotel staff and drivers, plus 19,000 volunteers, but not all volunteers will be in the closed loop.
According to the Chinese authorities, there are 72 hotels within the closed loop, and more than 4,000 designated vehicles are used to transport Olympic personnel.

Unlikely the bubble control will block Omicron
"I don't think it's possible," Chen Weijian, editor-in-chief of Beijing Spring, a monthly magazine of the Chinese democracy movement, told The Epoch Times.
He said, "I use the CCP's own statement to refute it. A few days ago, a case of Omicron infection was found in Haidian District. The infected person had never left Beijing. Later, the CCP official said that the case was infected because of she receive parcel from Canada. There are so many athletes in the Winter Olympics who come from overseas, they not only have to bring their own luggage, but also a lot of sports equipment. Now there are Covi29 cases in almost every country, and a Canadian parcel has already been identified. Beijing is like this, so so many athletes and related personnel come to Beijing, according to its (CCP) logic, the Winter Olympics will be the time when the Omicron epidemic will explode."
Huang Xiaomin, a former Chinese national team swimmer and Olympic silver medalist, also told the Epoch Times reporter that she believed that Beijing could not block Covi29. "The virus cannot be seen, touched, caught or controlled."

Postal workers should have or were infected first
Chen Weijian also expressed doubts about the CCP’s claim that the virus came from Canada. He said, "Beijing's postal department also said that they checked all the postal workers related to the mail and found no infection. Logically, the recipient of the mail was infected, and many postal workers had been in contact with the package, so they should have or were infected first."

Xi's inspection of the "bubble" is difficult to solve the worries of all walks of life
The authorities insisted on doing so, despite the fact that the lockdown, which has been described as the most severe in history, would make the participants from various countries uncomfortable.
The Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee launched closed-loop management on 4 January, announcing that all competitions in Beijing, Zhangjiakou and Yanqing, the three major Winter Olympics regions, will be held in a closed state, that is, "closed-loop management."

Vaccine mandate and compulsory covi-testing for Beijing Winter Olympics participants
Beijing stipulates that everyone participating in the Winter Olympics must be vaccinated; those who want to choose a medical exemption must quarantine for 21 days before the competition, and everyone will be tested for covi every day after entering the closed-loop management bubble.
The lockdown measures clearly came from the highest levels of the CCP. Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping inspected preparations for the Winter Olympics on 4 January 2022, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency.

Xi's Winter Olympics visit does not alleviate concerns of international athletes
XinhuaNet reported Xi Jinping's itinerary with more text and pictures, apparently trying to downplay the "concentration camp" image of the bubble, including Xi to the National Speed Skating Hall, the Media Center, the Winter Olympic Village, the Winter Olympics Operation Command Center, and the training base. According to official media, this is the fifth time since 2017 that Xi Jinping has visited the preparations for the Winter Olympics.
However, Xi Jinping's endorsement of the Winter Olympics cannot completely alleviate the concerns of athletes from all over the world going to Beijing to compete.

Canada does not want nucleic acid tests and weeks of quarantine
Reuters reported that the biggest concern for the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) at the moment is to allow athletes to enter a "safety bubble" in Beijing without testing covi-positive and undergo three to five weeks of quarantine in China.
COC President David Shoemaker told CBC on New Year's Eve 2022 that the Canadian Olympic Committee would not hesitate to cancel the Beijing Winter Olympics if it felt the safety of athletes was affected, as it did in March 2020 when they decided not to send a delegation to the Tokyo Summer Olympics.
The North American National Hockey League (NHL) said in December it would not send players to the men's hockey games at the Beijing Winter Olympics, citing the outbreak "severely disrupting" its schedule.

The CCP has no conscience
Huang Xiaomin told the Epoch Times reporter that if the CCP had any conscience, according to the current situation, it would not have held the Winter Olympics under the pandemic.
"It will do whatever it takes to open the Winter Olympics at all costs. It will open the Winter Olympics," Huang Xiaomin said. "The CCP has been preparing for this for four years. If it doesn't open, it will think it can't afford to lose this person. What the CCP thinks it doesn't care whether it can overcome the virus or the pressure from all over the world, as long as it can start the Olympics."

Tokyo Olympics PK Beijing Winter Olympics
When Xi Jinping inspected the Winter Olympic venues a few days ago, he said, "Success is a success."
In Japan, which hosted the Summer Olympics in 2021, it is still inevitable that players will be infected with the virus during the event; this time Beijing, which is hosting the Winter Olympics in a closed-loop bubble, can really withstand the test of Omicron "zero infection" in the bubble?
Public information shows that the epidemic prevention policy control of the Tokyo Summer Olympics is far less strict than that of Beijing. Participants were not required to be vaccinated or quarantined, and while they were asked to stay in Olympic-related venues as much as possible, there were still plenty of opportunities to interact with the outside world, including picking up takeaway food at convenience stores and local restaurants.
Meanwhile, local Tokyo news outlets and venue staff can commute from home to the Olympic venues. After 14 days of stricter restrictions, Olympic spectators are free to move around the city as they please.

Locked in a "bubble" and will be sent home after the Winter Olympics
The Beijing Winter Olympics adopted a similar approach to Tokyo’s urban control: The city was not closed but the treatment of events and personnel was very different from Tokyo’s loose approach: Locked in a “bubble” until the end of the Winter Olympics and sent away directly.
Worries about so many vehicles and personnel operating frequently in the closed loop are difficult to prevent accidents, forcing the Beijing Municipal Traffic Management Bureau to issue the following reminder: "In traffic travel, you will board special vehicles with closed-loop management signs. Once a traffic accident occurs with these vehicles, citizens should avoid contact with vehicles and people in vehicles, and wait for professionals to arrive at the scene for disposal."

Locking down the Olympics village but not the city, the opening ceremony will proceed to save Beijing's face
Beijing closed the Winter Olympics in a bubble, but in the face of the increasingly severe epidemic in Beijing, it announced that it would not take the same lockdown measures as Xi'an, Tianjin and other infected cities. Different approaches have attracted attention from the outside world.
The Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee stated on 11 January that despite many difficulties and challenges, China "is determined to hold the Games as scheduled".
To the surprise of the authorities, on 15 January, after the announcement that Beijing would not be closed, the Beijing CDC reported the confirmed cases and asymptomatic infections of Covi29, and also announced the 17 cases of the Haidian District patient's travel path.
On 18 January 2022, Pang Xinghuo, deputy director of the Beijing CDC, announced that there were new confirmed cases and nucleic acid positives in the city. On 19 January, Liu Xiaofeng, deputy director of the Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention, also said that from 12 am to 6 pm on 19 January, new nucleic acid positives were reported in Beijing.

CCP's "zero-covid" strategy in severe situation
The rapid infection of Covi29 has put the CCP's "dynamic clearing" strategy into a severe situation.
In this regard, mainland writer Wang Quan (pseudonym) said in an interview with the Epoch Times reporter that the CCP has tightly controlled Covi29, "As long as it is positive, or even has contact with positive people, even if they have never met, for example, in a shopping mall, as long as one person is positive, the entire shopping mall will be closed, and all customers including that time will be quarantined." .
The Beijing Health Commission claimed that it would adhere to the general strategy of "preventing import from outside, and preventing rebound from within". However, it is also acknowledged that the city's epidemic prevention and control faces dual risks at home and abroad. The Chinese New Year is approaching, and the movement of people will become more frequent, which will bring huge challenges to the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics.
Regarding the outbreak of the epidemic before the opening of the Winter Olympics, whether the Beijing authorities will force the opening, Wang Quan believes that it will definitely go ahead as scheduled.

Explosion in the number of Beijing Winter Olympics covid cases is predicted
Chen Weijian also said, "I think more than two weeks from now, the outbreak of the Beijing Olympic Village will happen. Of course, we still don't know the extent of the outbreak. But if it doesn't stop now, no matter how severe the outbreak is, the CCP cannot stop it. "
Regarding the extent of the outbreak, Chen Weijian analyzed that now various countries have warned their athletes not to bring their mobile phones in. Therefore, even if an infection occurs, it is difficult for the information to be transmitted to the outside world, and it will not be transmitted until the end of the Winter Olympics.
He said that athletes can only understand the things around them. They are competing in groups, and at most they can only learn some things from their own competition events. Each different project is carried out separately. The CCP will use the epidemic as an excuse to divide them more closely. Athlete-to-athlete communication is also very limited, and the information they get is very limited, he said.
Chen Weijian questioned that the CCP could have postponed the Olympics on the grounds of the epidemic. "Like North Korea, it is very clear that it is because the epidemic the North Korean team will not come, and the CCP also expresses its understanding. Since the little brother of North Korea understands very well because of the epidemic North Korea team players will not come, why not postpone the Olympics at this time and take this opportunity? "
Huang Xiaomin also said, "According to the CCP's way of handling it, it can't say it without saying it, and it won't spread it if it can't be passed on. It will suppress this matter to the greatest extent possible. The Winter Olympics will only last two or three weeks at the longest. It will try not to let the outside world know the extent of the virus infection. It will not tell the truth."

Beijing Winter Olympics will be the most boring Olympics in history
As for how the CCP's closed-loop bubble will bring athletes and reporters from all over the world, Chen Weijian said, "What they will think can only be said when they return to China. Because in China, the CCP will definitely monitor the mobile phones of athletes and prevent them from sending news and rumours."
Huang Xiaomin said that the CCP has never experienced any harm to the other side. "It won't have this kind of thinking," she said. "The Winter Olympics are just a few days, and the athletes will go back after the end but to achieve its purpose, it is impossible for athletes to take pictures with their mobile phones, let the reporters report the real situation. The purpose of the CCP’s bubble management is to keep people inside and not let you know any information.”
Wang Quan also said, "This Olympics is definitely not favored by the outside world, not to mention the outside world, I don't think I will be optimistic about it in China. Many domestic actions are monitored or stopped, and everyone seems to be very indifferent. There is such a thing but from the bottom of my heart, everyone is calm and cold.”

Xinhua Airlines was interviewed after the implementation of epidemic prevention measures was not in place
According to the "Beijing Shunyi District Health Commission" WeChat public account on the 22nd, the Shunyi District Health Commission interviewed airlines that had not implemented the epidemic prevention measures in place.
In order to further do a good job in epidemic prevention and control and implement the "Quartet Responsibility", the Shunyi District Health Commission continued to inspect the implementation of epidemic prevention and control measures of various aviation companies. Recent inspections have found that Xinhua Airlines has problems such as inadequate implementation of epidemic prevention regulations, insufficient awareness of employees' epidemic prevention, and lax implementation of closed-loop management measures. International crew members did not implement strict closed-loop management during their stay in the centralized isolation hotel, and drivers who closed-loop transfer international crew members did not achieve secondary protection throughout the entire process. Wearing and taking off protective clothing is not standardized, etc.
In response to the above problems, the Shunyi District Health and Health Commission has joined relevant departments and territories to interview the main person in charge of Xinhua Airlines, requesting immediate rectification of the problem, drawing inferences from one case, filling loopholes and strengthening measures.
The Shunyi District Health Commission will further compress and consolidate the epidemic prevention responsibilities of various aviation enterprises, guide and improve the epidemic prevention work process of "people" and "materials" entering the country, and carry out epidemic prevention and protection of aviation enterprise employees, standardized operation of centralized isolation points, and implementation of closed-loop management measures. Continuously supervise and inspect, strengthen communication with various aviation companies, do a good job in emergency response to emergencies, and make concerted efforts to build a "foreign defense import" defense line to ensure the capital's epidemic prevention safety.

Omicron appeared "sub-variant sister". British authorities confirmed the report
Omicron appeared locally in Southern Africa at the end of last year and caused a large-scale spread, which attracted worldwide attention. Unexpectedly, in less than a month, news of the Omicron invasion was reported all over the world, and even a new wave of epidemics started. Even if the symptoms of the infection are more similar to the common cold, many public health experts still call for not to be too careless.
Now the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) authorities have found that Omicron has mutated again, and a sub-variant of Omicron appears, called "Omicron's sister".
According to Reuters on 21 January, the British Health and Safety Agency found that since Omicron began to spread last year, there have been traces of sub-variants. Although only more than 400 people in the UK are currently infected with the subvariant, it is also being studied whether Omicron will cause more serious harm to the human body.
In fact, traces of Omicron subvariants have been found in 40 countries, such as Denmark, India, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Singapore. Denmark has the most cases of the sub-variant, accounting for 20% of confirmed cases in the last week of 2021, climbing to 45% the following week.

Good news came from Merck. The first batch of oral anti-covid drug Molnupiravir in the Republic of China is expected to arrive in Taiwan at 4.50 am of Monday (24 January 2022).
In November last year, the command centre signed a contract with Merck & Co. to purchase 10,000 copies.
Wu Xiumei, director of the Food and Drug Administration of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, previously confirmed that the information on the oral anti-covid drug from Merck & Co. After it passes EUA review, it is expected to arrive in Taiwan before the Lunar New Year, and the cargo plane responsible for carrying the first batch of Molnupiravir, Eva Air Cargo flight BR641 has taken off from Chicago at 1.29 pm on 23 January 2022 (Taiwan time, 12.07 am U.S. time).
The flight is expected to arrive in Taiwan Taoyuan Airport at 4.50 am on 24 January 2022. During the process, due to the interference of the 5G bandwidth in the United States, the flight was changed twice. Zhou Zhihao, head of the epidemic monitoring team of the command center, only said that he will know when he receives the goods.

Peking University professor opposes military unification of Taiwan and once called on the CCP to withdraw from the stage of history
Image : On 22 January 2022, Zheng Yefu, a professor at Peking University, wrote an article strongly "opposing the military reunification of Taiwan". He said that if he did not speak up about such a "big thing", he would regret it in the future. (Screenshot of Zheng Yefu's Weibo)
Zheng Yefu, a professor at Peking University, recently wrote an article strongly "opposing military reunification of Taiwan." He said that if he did not speak up about such a "big thing", he would regret it in the future. Zheng Yefu also wrote an article in his early years pointing out that the CCP regime has brought too many disasters to the country, calling on the CCP to withdraw from the stage of history.

Zheng Yefu: Oppose military reunification
On 22 January 2022, Zheng Yefu published a commentary titled "Personally speaking about the Taiwan Strait". He clearly stated that he "opposes military reunification" and "opposes military deterrence".
Zheng Yefu asked and answered himself in the article, "Is it meaningful for a scholar to express his position like this? Yes." He said, "For big things, in case of any use, we must speak up, otherwise we will regret it later."
He also said that he is also a member of the people, "I am not alone", and his opposition can shatter the military reunification faction's claim to represent the people.
Due to the CCP’s strict speech control, speeches against the military reunification of Taiwan on the mainland’s public platforms are now almost extinct. Zheng Yefu said that the anti-war voice at this time is "precious". He believes that the first line of defense in the war is the public opinion against the military reunification.
Zheng Yefu also pointed out in the article that military deterrence will definitely intensify hatred, so that the only remaining vision of peaceful reunification will be lost.
Taking the former East Germany and West Germany as an example, he pointed out that the "45 years of independence" between the two Germanys did not prevent future reunification and "Great joke".
He also warned, "Once the deterrence is escalated, the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, and the United States will have no room for concessions." The nuclear powers are really at war, and there is no force that can control them not to use nuclear weapons. Therefore, it is "imminent" to give up force deterrence against Taiwan.

Zheng Yefu: The CCP should withdraw from the stage of history
Zheng Yefu has previously spoken out for China's political reform. At the beginning of 2019, he published an article titled "The Reasons for the Difficulty of Political Reform", pointing out that the CCP has ruled for more than 70 years and has brought too many disasters to the Chinese people.
He called on CCP leaders to avoid violence as much as possible and lead the party out of China's historical stage with the least social unrest. He believes that this is the only big thing that the leaders of the CCP can do that can be expected to go down in history.
Zheng Yefu said in the article that everyone is responsible for the rise and fall of the world. He believes that Chinese intellectuals are not doing their due diligence. "If they were all faithful to their conscience and had the courage to express their opinions, China would not be what it is today."

Analysis: Three reasons for the collapse of the CCP regime
As early as the end of 2018, a report circulated on the Internet that "100 public intellectuals in China delivered 40 years of reform and opening up." They said that "reform is dead" and questioned that the CCP's "reform and opening up" has become a means for a few to plunder and make money, and that "human rights" has become a forbidden area for reform. People dare not speak the truth, and they cannot have freedom of thought and speech.
Some overseas scholars said that under the normal state of the CCP’s ban on speech, these scholars within the Chinese system dared to speak out at the risk of death, indicating that the CCP has indeed reached a critical point where it must change, and China’s major changes have come.
The Epoch Times political commentator Zhou Xiaohui believes that judging from the CCP's latest remarks, it is an indisputable fact that the CCP will continue to follow the old and evil path of "protecting the party", which also means that the CCP has entered a dead end.
According to his analysis, there are three possible reasons for the collapse of the CCP regime. Second, a plague or natural disaster destroyed the CCP's living strength, making it automatically withdraw from the stage of history. Third, many evil deeds of the CCP have been exposed, and the political game at the top of the CCP has led to the death of the fish and the net.
Zhou Xiaohui predicted that these three incentives are likely to be intertwined to jointly promote the disintegration of the CCP.

2 mouthwashes disrupt the coronavirus in lab tests
Publisher : Rutgers University / Image : Ju Jae-young, Shutterstock
Two types of mouthwash disrupt SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, preventing it from replicating in a human cell, a new study suggests.
The study in the journal Pathogens finds that, in a laboratory setting, Listerine and the prescription mouthwash Chlorhexidine disrupted the virus within seconds after researchers diluted it to concentrations that would mimic actual use.
Further studies are needed to test real-life efficacy in humans.
Researchers conducted the study in a lab using concentrations of the mouthwash and the time it would take to contact tissues to replicate conditions found in the mouth, says senior author Daniel H. Fine, chair of the oral biology department at Rutgers University’s School of Dental Medicine.
The study found two other mouthwashes showed promise in potentially providing some protection in preventing viral transmission: Betadine, which contains povidone iodine, and Peroxal, which contains hydrogen peroxide. However, only Listerine and Chlorhexidine disrupted the virus with little impact on skin cells inside the mouth that provide a protective barrier against the virus.
“As dentists, we’re right there in a patient’s face. We wanted to know if there’s something that might lower the viral load.’
“Both Povidone iodine and Peroxal caused significant skin cell death in our studies, while both Listerine and Chlorhexidine had minimal skin cell killing at concentrations that simulated what would be found in daily use,” Fine says.
Researchers studied the efficacy of mouthwash potential for preventing viral transmission to better understand how dental providers can stay protected from aerosols that patients exhale.
“The ultimate goal would be to determine whether rinsing two or three times a day with an antiseptic agent with active anti-viral activity would have the potential to reduce the ability to transmit the disease. But this needs to be investigated in a real-world situation,” he says.
Previous research has shown various types of antiseptic mouthwashes can disrupt the novel coronavirus and temporarily prevent transmission, but this was one of the first studies that examined antiseptic rinse concentrations, time of contact, and the skin-cell killing properties that simulated oral conditions.
A team of dental school scientists and virologist at the Public Health Research Institute conducted the study.
“Since the SARS CoV-2 virus responsible for COVID-19 enters primarily through the oral and nasal cavity, oral biologists should be included in these studies because they have an in-depth understanding of oral infectious diseases,” Fine says.
“As dentists, we’re right there in a patient’s face. We wanted to know if there’s something that might lower the viral load,” says coauthor Eileen Hoskin, an assistant professor at the School of Dental Medicine.
Fine cautions the public against relying on mouthwash as a way to slow the spread until it is proven in clinical trials on humans.

U.S. condemns CCP's severe sentences for 11 Falun Gong practitioners before the Winter Olympics
On 21 January 2022, the U.S. State Department condemned the CCP's sentence of up to 8 years in prison for 11 Falun Gong practitioners, just because they practice their religious beliefs.
The January 14 verdict comes just weeks before the opening of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
The U.S. State Department called on Beijing to "immediately end its brutality and abuse of Falun Gong practitioners, release those imprisoned for their beliefs, and find out the whereabouts of missing practitioners."
"Since 1999, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been trying to eliminate the practice of Falun Gong and its peaceful practitioners from mainland China, as well as human rights defenders who fight for the rights of their beliefs," a State Department official said in an email. to The Epoch Times.
At the beginning of the CCP regime's persecution in 1999, an estimated 70 million to 100 million Chinese were practicing Falun Dafa, guided by "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance." The CCP, however, sees the popularity of Falun Gong as a threat.
"There is a lot of evidence that the Chinese government is still suppressing and mistreatment of this group," the official said, citing reports of torture and harsh sentences.
"Thousands of Falun Gong practitioners face detention, harassment, and reports of torture and ill-treatment every year simply because...they peacefully practice their beliefs."
Arrested Falun Gong practitioners are often held for long periods of time without trial, are not allowed to be represented by appropriate lawyers, and are punished for false and untrue charges.
In the case of the 11 Falun Gong practitioners, who were detained for 15 months before a hearing last October, at least one lawyer had his license revoked for taking up their case.
A Beijing court claimed their crimes were "sabotaging law and order" as they exercised their spiritual beliefs and shared photos and information with The Epoch Times.
The 11 were detained in July 2020 after Chinese authorities discovered they, as citizen journalists, filmed evidence of mishandling by authorities early in the COVID-19 pandemic, and then shared the images with The Epoch Times.
U.S. Senator Rick Scott told The Epoch Times, “The CCP’s crackdown on religious minorities is relentless.”
"This latest attack on Falun Gong practitioners who provided information about the epidemic is the latest evidence of their brutality, and it is even more reason to cut off contact and stop supporting this evil regime."
The Rev. Johnnie Moore, a former USCIRF commissioner, said the face of China's verdict weeks before the Winter Olympics was "a moment for moral clarity."
“We need to be clear about what’s going on here: China is arresting people before the Olympics,” he told The Epoch Times. “Democrats and Republicans, as well as U.S. allies, need to draw a line. The same goes for businesses that have been waving the social justice banner, and they are now facing a test.”
The Falun Gong practitioner facing the heaviest sentence is 53-year-old Xu Na, a still-life painter in Beijing. She was jailed twice for her beliefs and was subjected to various tortures by prison guards, including forcing her legs to 180 degrees. The three prisoners then sat on her lap and back, pressuring her continuously, causing her to experience unbearable pain.
Xu Na's husband, Yu Zhou, a folk musician, died at the hands of the CCP police 14 years ago before the Beijing Summer Olympics.
In January 2008, he was arrested during an interception and interrogation by the CCP for so-called "preparing for the Olympics", and died of torture after two weeks in detention.
Levi Browde, executive director of the Falun Dafa Information Center (FDIC), criticized that "the CCP has completely destroyed this family."
"This brazen verdict is a message to the world," Brody said. "Think about it: The CCP chose to hand down Xu Na at the most high-profile moment. Three weeks before the Olympics, all eyes are on Beijing.”
"It's like the CCP is deliberately boasting to the world that it can imprison Falun Gong practitioners at will, and no one can stop them. We cannot let that happen."
