Cyprus finds new strain combining Delta and Omicron variants

Bloomberg News reported on Saturday (8 January 2022) that researchers in Cyprus have discovered a new covi that combines Delta and Omicron variants.
Leondios Kostrikis, a professor of biological sciences at the University of Cyprus, called the covi strain "Deltacron" because it has an Omicron-like genetic signature in the Delta genome. There is no official scientific name for this hybrid covi variant yet as it is not a Variant Of Concern.
So far, Kostrikis and his team have identified 25 cases of the new variant, the report said. It is too early to tell whether there are more cases or the possible impact of this new strain.
Statistical analysis showed that the relative frequency of coinfection was higher in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 compared with non-hospitalized patients. On 7 January, the sequences of the 25 Deltacron cases were sent to GISAID, an international database that tracks changes in the virus.
"We'll see in the future whether this strain is more pathological or more contagious, or whether it's more than the two main strains, Delta and Omicron," Kostrikis said in an interview with Sigma TV on Friday. ."
Kostrikis's personal view is that this strain will also be replaced by a highly contagious variant of Omicron.
