Turkiye declared seven days of national mourning in memory of the victims of the earthquake. The Turkish Ministry of Education announced the closure of schools at all levels across the country for a week.
According to Turkish media reports, the earthquake was the worst earthquake in Turkiye since 1999. At least 78 aftershocks occurred in the early morning of the 6th earthquake, and 10 provinces were affected by strong earthquakes. A large number of local buildings were damaged, and entire rows of houses collapsed. It is currently winter in Turkiye, the weather is very cold, and snowfall may affect search and rescue. Third earthquake hits Turkiye on 7 February 2023
Reporter : Chris Jewers / https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11721455/Turkey-Syria-earthquake-NEW-earthquake-hits-Turkey-early-hours-death-toll-nears-5-000.html
A third earthquake hit Turkiye early Tuesday morning after two others devastated the country and its neighbour Syria a day earlier, killing at least 4,800 people and trapping scores more under the rubble of collapsed buildings.
The 5.8-magnitude quake struck at a depth of 1.2 miles in central Turkey, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said, as rescue efforts in the two countries continued as dawn broke and as the death toll in Turkey alone rose past 3,300.
A winter storm causing near-freezing temperatures has been hampering those working desperately to free people from the rubble of collapsed buildings, with the cold weather making the need to reach trapped survivors even more urgent.
In the badly hit Turkish city of Hatay, residents helplessly called out as the screams and shouts of those freezing under the rubble filled the air. Desperate to reach them in time, rescuers have been digging with their bare hands.
Meanwhile, tens of thousands have been left homeless and sleeping in their cars or searching for temporary accommodation after thousands of buildings were brought down on both sides of the border, sparking a growing humanitarian crisis in a region already ravaged by the years-long Syrian civil war.
A vast international response will be required to tackle the crisis. Several international rescue missions have rushed to Turkey and Syria after both countries called for help.
Tremors felt as far as Denmark, Greenland and many other countries
The earthquakes that hit Turkiye and Syria were felt as far as Denmark, Greenland, Greece, Egypt, Cyprus while Italy issued a tsunami warning along the country's coast.
The first earthquake, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake, shook Turkey and Syria for about a minute and resulted in the deaths of more than 2,300 people.
The epicentre was just north of the city of Gaziantep at a depth of around 11 miles (18 km), according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), and the quake struck at 04:17 am local time (01:17 GMT).
Tremors were felt as far away as Egypt, Lebanon and the island of Cyprus, while a tsunami warning was briefly issued by authorities in Italy along the country's coast.
Hours later, a second 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit two-and-a-half miles south-southeast of the town of Ekinozu.
The nearby city of Gaziantep has a population of about two million people and the region is home to large numbers of Syrian refugees.
About ten minutes after the initial quake, a strong 6.6-magnitude aftershock rumbled, and another 40 smaller quakes were felt over the following two hours.
However, that wasn't the end of the devastation, as a second 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit the country at 1:24 pm (10:24 GMT).
This struck 60 miles (97 km) north of first epicentre, about 42 miles (67 km) north-east of Kahramanmaraş, before about 100 smaller aftershocks.
It occurred at a depth of 6 miles (10 km), according to USGS, and the epicentre was in the Elbistan region of Kahramanmaras province.
Tremors were felt as far away as Greenland, the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland said.
"The large earthquakes in Turkey were clearly registered on the seismographs in Denmark and Greenland," seismologist Tine Larsen told AFP.
On average, fewer than 20 earthquakes exceed a magnitude of 7.0 worldwide each year, and Dr David Rothery said this one was "relatively shallow".
The Professor of Planetary Geosciences at The Open University said, "The shaking at the ground surface will have been more severe than for a deeper earthquake of the same magnitude at source.
"Many of the subsequent aftershocks, although weaker at source, have occurred at shallower depths."

Malaysia approves KL Subang airport revamp plan to attract high-end travelers
According to the Lianhe Zaobao report, the Malaysian cabinet has approved the upgrade plan (SARP) for the Kuala Lumpur Subang Airport, preparing to turn this once the most important international airport in Malaysia into a capital city center airport similar to London Heathrow Airport, and focus on attracting high-end tourists.
Malaysian Transport Minister Lu Zhaofu told the media after inspecting Subang Airport (Subang, in short) on Monday (6 February 2023) that the plan is not for Subang Airport to replace Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), because Subang Airport will focus on attracting business class and first-class passengers after upgrading.
He revealed that the Subang Airport Renovation Project is a strategic transformation plan to transform Subang into the most popular aviation hub in the Asia-Pacific region. After years of research by successive governments, Malaysia Airports Holdings (MAHB) formally submitted the plan to the cabinet on 2 February, and the cabinet decided to approve it after careful study.
He said the transformation plan includes making Subang an aviation hub, maintenance and operations centre, research and development centre, general aviation operations, business aviation operations, urban air operations, and regional commercial aviation operations.
Lu Zhaofu said that the authorities will reintroduce Airbus A320, Boeing 737 and other similar narrow-body passenger aircraft to Subang, as well as narrow-body passenger aircraft used as cargo aircraft. “Subang Airport is strategically located in the heart of Malaysia’s capital city, and our target market is business class and first class passengers.”
He pointed out that the renovation plan will make Subang a regional aviation hub with an annual passenger volume of 8 million passengers and create thousands of job opportunities for Malaysians. However, he emphasized that the transformation plan is not intended to replace the KLIA as KLIA in Sepang has reached its annual passenger capacity target of 60 million passengers as early as 2019.
Subang used to be one of the busiest airports in the Asia-Pacific region. However, after KLIA opened in 1998, Subang Airport has gradually declined, and is currently only used by private jets, Firefly, SKS Airways and the Malaysian Air Force.

On the first day of the resumption of the pilot outbound group tour program, the first group of Chinese outbound tourists arrived in Thailand
Image : Spring Travel
At 8.05 am on 6 February 2023, a group of nearly 40 tourists who boarded Spring Airlines flight 9C7419 flew from Guangzhou to Don Mueang and were warmly welcomed by the locals. They will be on a 6-day romantic trip to Koh Samed, Pattaya, Bangkok from Don Mueang. After the resumption of China's outbound group tour pilot program in three years, this group is the first tourist group to arrive in the first batch of 20 destination countries and Spring Airlines completes its inaugural flight to Don Mueang from Guangzhou.
Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok held a grand and warm welcome ceremony to welcome the first group of tourists from China. Yang Xin, charge d'affaires of the CCP embassy in the Kingdom of Thailand, Yuthasak, director of the Thailand National Tourism Administration, Ma Tao, director of the Asia-Pacific Office of the International Civil Aviation Organization of the United Nations, Karan Thanakhunkirapa, director of Don Mueang International Airport, and other leaders attended the welcoming ceremony, and presented exquisite souvenirs to the tourists.
On the same day, the outbound travel team organized by Spring Travel Agency also set off from Shanghai, Kunming and other cities across the country to Phuket in Thailand and Vientiane in Laos. According to the statistics of Spring Travel Agency, as of 3 February, Spring Travel Agency has sold nearly a thousand types of outbound travel products online, including group tours, independent travel, visa services, air tickets, hotels and other individual products, fully meeting the different needs of tourists of different ages.
Spring Airlines said that at present, Spring Airlines has resumed 24 international and regional routes, including 16 routes in Southeast Asia. Since the Lunar New Year, the passenger load factor of flights in international regions has reached an average of over 90%, and many flights have reached 100%. "After the resumption of China's outbound group travel pilot, Spring Airlines has received calls from many travel agencies to inquire about charter flights and seat reservations. Seats on international flights from Nanchang and Jieyang to Bangkok, Thailand have been booked by travel agencies." At the same time, the demand for flights to other tourist destinations in Malaysia, Singapore and Cambodia is also very hot. The number of group tour tourists received every day is steadily increasing. "In the first ten days of February, there are expected to be 80 group tourists every day departing from Shanghai alone. In the middle and late ten days, this number is expected to increase to 120 people."
With the acceleration of outbound travel related personnel, including destination reception staff returning to work, the positive information dissemination of first-time group tourists after on-site experience, and the continuous increase of international flights, Chinese citizens' outbound travel is expected to pick up rapidly this year.
After the resumption of outbound travel, the first Shanghai delegation departs on 6 February 2023

According to the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, travel agencies and online travel companies will resume inbound and outbound group tours and "air ticket + hotel" business in the Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau from now on; travel agencies and online travel companies can resume operating outbound group tours for Chinese citizens to relevant countries and "air ticket + hotel" business. After the implementation of the new policy, 4 tour groups from 3 travel agencies in Shanghai set off on 6 February 2023 their outbound travel itineraries.
According to the statistics of Spring Travel Agency, as of 3 February, Spring Travel Agency has sold nearly a thousand types of outbound travel products online, including group tours, independent travel, visa services, and individual products such as "air tickets" and "hotels". Among them, the group tour product of Phuket Island, which includes the "classic" + "net celebrity" attractions in Phuket, Thailand, has been sold for 6 days and 5 nights because of its advantages in price, itinerary, visa (Thailand visa on arrival is optional), and flight schedule. Launched and sold out on the same day, the first tour on 6 February was this route, covering 24 Chinese tourists from Shanghai of all ages, old, middle-aged and young. The Spring Airlines flight 9C8521 takes off from Pudong at 10.40 am and arrives in Phuket at 3.15 pm.
At the scene, Spring Travel Agency and the Shanghai Office of the National Tourism Administration of Thailand held the "Welcome Ceremony for the First Outbound Tour Group to Phuket, Thailand" at Pudong Airport. Thai hostesses dressed in traditional Thai costumes gave each of the first group tourists a phone card that can be used to surf the Internet in Thailand and flowers to express their welcome when they arrived at the airport for check-in procedures. KT boards and welcome banners were also specially prepared for the group tourists to take pictures and check in.
In the face of the newly restarted outbound travel market, people in the industry are very cautious. Spring said that the notice issued by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to resume the outbound group travel business of travel agencies was issued close to the Lunar New Year. Travel agencies do not have enough time for product design, resource procurement, marketing, and landing operations. There are not many tour groups departing on the 6th. With the accelerated return of outbound travel related personnel (including destination reception staff), positive information dissemination after the on-site experience of the first group tourists, and the increasing number of international flights after the civil aviation season changes at the end of March, the outbound travel of Chinese citizens will be welcome in the spring of 2023. However, considering comprehensive factors such as the economic downturn and employment pressure, the holiday nature of tourism, and the international environment, it still takes time for policies, and the joint efforts of tourism practitioners to fully recover outbound tourism.
With the gradual advancement of the inbound and outbound group tourism business, the Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism requires all travel agencies and online tourism companies to shoulder the main responsibility as the actual operators, tighten the string of safety at all times, and accurately grasp the tourism business, especially in the process of overseas operations. Considering the risk points, establish and improve enterprise safety management system in a targeted manner, and enhance tourism emergency prevention and emergency response capabilities. It is necessary to strengthen safety education and training for employees, implement tourism safety responsibilities at all levels, and establish a solid safety awareness. At the same time, the analysis and judgment of the national security situation and the epidemic situation of the pilot destinations will be strengthened, and the outbound tourism business will be carried out in an orderly and steady manner.
Tourism law enforcement departments of the CCP will also pay close attention to market dynamics, strengthen law enforcement and supervision of the tourism market, and punish violations of laws and regulations in outbound tourism business such as "unreasonable and low-priced travel", operating travel agency business without a license, and destination countries that do not comply with regulations, comprehensive and long-term investigation and rectification.

Korean media: The covi-positive rate of passengers entering South Korea from China is zero
According to Yonhap News Agency, according to the data released by South Korea's Central Anti-epidemic Countermeasures Headquarters on 4 February 2023, the covi-positive rate of the covid landing test for passengers entering South Korea from CCP China that day was zero. This is the first time since South Korea implemented the covid inspection for short-term stay personnel entering South Korea after more than a month.
According to statistics, a total of 1,136 people entered the country from China that day, 164 of whom were tested for the covi nucleic acid after entering the country, and no one was confirmed to be infected. From 22 to 28 February 2023, 7,399 people entered South Korea from China, of which 7,272 were tested for the covi nucleic acid after entering the country, and 146 were confirmed to be infected. The covi-positive rate was 2%, a decrease of 0.9 percentage points from the previous week.
The South Korean government has implemented landing inspections for people entering South Korea from 2 January 2023.
As the covi-positive rate of landing inspections for people entering China from China continues to decline and the number of confirmed cases continues to decrease, attention has been paid to whether the measures of landing inspections and the suspension of issuance of short-term visas for Chinese citizens to South Korea will be canceled in advance. At the end of last month, Prime Minister Han Jue-soo said in a discussion with the journalist group that if the test results of the covi nucleic acid of Chinese citizens entering the country are within the controllable range, they will consider canceling the visa suspension measures in advance.
