The Globe and Mail asked the Canadian Public Health Agency whether it is a common practice for NML scientists to cooperate with senior Chinese military researchers.

The National Post previously reported that according to intellectual property documents, Qiu Xiangguo registered invention patents in Beijing in 2017 and 2019 in cooperation with CCP scientists, and was the co-inventor of the two patents applied by the CCP official agency. Ward Elcock, the former director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), said Canada should not allow such cooperation.
"If I had this information in front of me when I was the head of CSIS, would it sound the alarm for me? Absolutely," he said.
CSIS said that the Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) was investigating and did not comment on the matter.
