Study: Subvariant BA.2 can cause severe disease and make vaccines ineffective

Reporter : Li Xin / Editor : Lin Yan / https://www.epochtimes.com/gb/22/2/18/n13587727.htm / Image : Robin Beck / Getty Images

New research shows that the BA.2 subvariant of the covi variant Omicron not only spreads faster but may also cause more severe disease and the protective ability of the vaccine is ineffective.

According to CNN, some new experiments in Japan suggest that the BA.2 virus may have characteristics that allow it to cause severe disease like older covi variants including Delta, and like Omicron, it appears to have largely evaded immunity from vaccines.

BA.2 is also resistant to some treatments, including the monoclonal antibody sotrovimab currently used to treat Omicron.

The findings were published Wednesday (16 February 2022) as a preprint on the biological repository website bioRxiv, before being peer-reviewed.

"From a human perspective, this may be a worse virus than BA.1, and may spread faster and cause more severe disease," said Daniel Rowe, chief of microbiology at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Daniel Rhoads said. Rhodes reviewed the study, but he was not involved in it.

Kei Sato, a researcher at the University of Tokyo who conducted the study, believes that since BA.2 was shown to be highly mutagenic, it should not be considered a type of Omicron and should be monitored more closely, and establish a special method to detect BA.2.

Deborah Fuller, a virologist at the University of Washington School of Medicine, agrees. She also reviewed the study but was not involved in it.

BA.2 is approximately 30% to 50% more infectious than Omicron. It has been detected in 74 countries and 47 U.S. states.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 4% of covid patients in the U.S. are now infected by BA.2.

In Denmark, BA.2 has become the leading cause of COVID-19 infections. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hospitalizations and deaths from BA.2 are on the rise in the country.

The new study also found that BA.2 is resistant to monoclonal antibody treatment.

Because BA.2 replicates itself in cells faster than Omicron's original version, BA.1, and is also better at making cells stick together to create syncytia, it tends to make more copies of the virus.

BA.2 can also break through the antibody defense line in the blood of covi vaccine recipients, infecting vaccinated people. It is almost completely resistant to some monoclonal antibody treatments.

Zhuhai Airport suspends all flights to Beijing

Zhuhai Airport's official Weibo announced that all flights from Zhuhai Airport to Beijing are cancelled from 18 February 2022. At the same time, passengers with a history of living in Shenzhen within 14 days are reminded that they must hold a 48-hour nucleic acid test negative certificate before boarding.

In the early morning of the same day, Zhuhai Airport's official Weibo announced that "due to public safety reasons", 12 inbound and outbound flights to Beijing were cancelled.

According to the official notification from Zhuhai, there was only one new case of local asymptomatic infection on the 17th. However, the authenticity of the official data has been questioned by the outside world.

In addition, the epidemic situation in Hong Kong has been severe recently, and the number of confirmed cases in a single day has exceeded 10,000. Some Hong Kong people smuggled into Zhuhai and Guangzhou, and spread the epidemic to other provinces in China. The Zhuhai authorities have set up anti-smuggling reporting bonuses for this purpose to strictly prevent Hong Kong smugglers from entering the epidemic.

A few days ago, two men were found in Chenzhou, Hunan Province, who took a boat from Hong Kong to Zhuhai, and then drove back to Chenzhou.

Hong Kong epidemic out of control, many children died of infection

In Hong Kong, two children under the age of 4 died of the virus recently, and the number of children infected with the virus has continued to increase, accounting for about 4%, which has aroused public attention. "Hong Kong 01" reported on 17 February that fire department ambulance officer Tang Yaoji said that due to the out-of-control epidemic and overloaded medical institutions, many patients were stranded in the community and could not be admitted to hospital for treatment.

Tong Yaoji said that one night, he rushed to Tuen Mun to pick up a 5-year-old boy with a fever for admission, but found that a total of 15 people in the village house were infected, and a 5-year-old girl was also diagnosed. The boy's father expressed that he did not want to increase the medical pressure and only sent his son, whose condition deteriorated, to hospital for treatment.

The scene in front of him made Tang Yaoji feel sad, and he finally took both children away for treatment. He lamented the limited medical resources and regretted not being able to send all the patients to the hospital for treatment.

Another fire department ambulance officer, Fong Ka-chi, who has been stationed at the treatment facility, mentioned that a 6-year-old boy infected with the virus was taken to the hospital for isolation and treatment by himself. Children face treatment alone.

Hong Kong reports 24 new deaths, 15 in one day

He Wanxia, chief administrative manager of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority, said at a press conference on the 17th that there were 24 new deaths in Hong Kong, of which 15 died within one day, and 9 died between 11 and 15 February are between the ages of 36 and 98.

She informed that there are still more than 10 confirmed patients in critical condition. One of them, a 28-year-old woman, whose condition deteriorated after giving birth, is currently hospitalized in the intensive care unit and needs to be intubated to assist breathing, but the baby is fine.

Due to the soaring number of confirmed cases, the fire department is seriously understaffed, and 43 ambulance staff have been diagnosed, forcing 11 ambulance stations to be temporarily closed for disinfection, putting pressure on the ambulance service, with many ambulance staff working up to 17 hours a day.

In order to share the pressure on ambulances, the Fire Services Department began to borrow tourist buses to take patients with mild illnesses to treatment centers such as Penny's Bay and Asia. The tour bus industry revealed that there are about 200 tour buses on standby and an estimated 400 drivers are needed.

Xi Jinping recently ordered the Hong Kong government to make stabilizing and controlling the epidemic an "overriding" task. Hong Kong has begun to take epidemic prevention measures of "zero-clearing" and large-scale nucleic acid testing and screening.

Australia's "Sydney Morning Herald" (SMH) reported on 18 February 2022 that the Australian Federal Police (AFP) recently cracked a case of arms smuggling from Russia to China. The two suspects were 64 years old and from China. Kim Bowei Lee, an accountant, and Alexander Cher, a 63-year-old businessman from Russia who is suspected of being linked to a Chinese spy ring that Australia has been investigating for years, including a cousin of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Xi Qiming.

On the 18th, the Queensland Magistrates' Court of Australia opened a hearing in the case of Kim Bowei Lee and Alexander Cher. The two were charged with allegedly violating Australia's "Defense Trade Control Act" by partnering with another Chinese Melbourne businessman, Brian Chen, in January 2018. From 9 to 27 July, arms smuggled from Russia to China. Interpol has issued a red notice for Brian Chen. Multiple official sources further revealed that the case is actually an extension of the discovery of a CCP spy ring that the Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) began investigating in August 2016.

That year, when the Australian police investigated the suspected money laundering of the casinos owned by Crown Resorts, they found on a private plane Tom Zhou and Xi Qiming, the Melbourne gangsters who were responsible for connecting Chinese gamblers and suspected of infiltrating the CCP. The younger brother Qi Ming, the suspect in this case, Li Jin, and a person suspected of being related to Chinese intelligence agencies, a total of 6 people, showing that Li Jin may be related to these people, but Kim Bowei Lee and Cher are currently only accused of illegally engaging in arms brokerage, and he has not been charged with espionage or other crimes.

It is worth noting that in 2019, ASIO noticed Brian Chen when investigating the casino case, making Brian Chen one of the first Chinese spies to be exposed in Australia. Brian Chen had been named the operator or shareholder of a number of Chinese and Hong Kong arms procurement companies, and tried to pay 1 million Australian dollars to bribe Nick Zhao, a member of the Australian Liberal Party and a luxury car dealer, hoping that he would run for election as a "spy" and Enter Congress. Zhao Bo is confirming that the incident died unexpectedly, and the cause of death is unknown. Brian Chen denied any involvement with the Chinese military, but is now involved in Li Jin and Keir's army trafficking record.

It is understood that the Australian police did not name Brian Chen in the statement of the case, but only stated that "a 59-year-old Chinese citizen currently living overseas" is also wanted. Kim Bowei Lee is currently on bail. Cher has been doing business in Queensland and New South Wales since 1996, covering agriculture, real estate, construction and maritime, etc., and has been sponsored by Russian and Ukrainian businessmen; he is also an immigration agent recognized by the Australian government. Assist Russians in obtaining Australian residency or visas. He is also currently out on bail but not allowed to leave the country and must report to the police twice a week.

Bill Gates: Risk of Wuhan pneumonia has been greatly reduced, another pandemic is coming

Microsoft founder Bill Gates (Bill Gates) said on 18 February 2022 that the risk of serious illness caused by Wuhan pneumonia (covid, COVID-19) has been "significantly reduced", but another  pandemic is almost certain to come.

Bill Gates told CNBC at the annual Munich Security Conference in Germany that a potential epidemic could originate from a different pathogen than the Wuhan virus strain, and more advanced medical technology should help the world fight if it invests now it.

Bill Gates pointed out that two years after the outbreak of the Wuhan pneumonia epidemic, the worst effects have subsided, because a large number of the global population has acquired a certain degree of immunity, and the emergence of the Omircron variant virus also shows that its severity has decreased.

Bill Gates also said that it is "too late" to achieve the World Health Organization (WHO) target of 70% global vaccine coverage by mid-2022, with only 61.9% of the world's population currently receiving at least the first dose of the vaccine. He suggested that the development and distribution of vaccines should be accelerated in the future, and called on countries to invest immediately.

Bill Gates noted that the risk of serious illnesses related to the elderly, obesity or diabetes has been greatly reduced, but said: "We're going to have another pandemic, next time it's going to be a different pathogen."

"The cost of preparing for the next pandemic is not that big," Bill Gates said. "It's not about climate change, and if we're rational, we'll prepare ahead of time next time."

Bill Gates, through his foundation, in partnership with the Wellcome Trust, reportedly donated $300 million to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) to help implement the Covax program to deliver vaccines to low- and middle-income countries. CEPI aims to raise $3.5 billion to reduce the time it takes to develop a new vaccine to 100 days.

Artillery has rumbled in eastern Ukraine over the past few days, with three bombings in a row in the early hours of Saturday. The Ukrainian government forces and the pro-Russian rebels are still biting each other and attacking first.

However, the latest satellite images of the United States show that Russia continues to build troops on the border.

At present, the battalion-level tactical group that has been positioned has nearly 90,000 people, which means that nearly half of the troops are ready for war.

The orange fire lit up the night sky. In the past few days, in Drus, the big city of Luhansk in eastern Ukraine, not only the sound of artillery rumbled, but the oil pipeline suddenly exploded.

A witness said, "I didn't see anything, just a sudden bang. The curtain fell while working, and it exploded suddenly."

In just a few hours, there were three explosions in succession, including car bombs in the district. Just like the previous Ukrainian artillery conflict, the Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russian rebels bit each other and attacked first.

CNN reporter commented, "The Russian Ministry of Defense said some units will return to their bases after the exercise, but evidence on the ground shows that at least some Russian armored vehicles are heading towards Ukraine."

Just according to the latest aerial video, the Russian army is not only getting closer and closer to the border cities of Ukraine, but the tactical group has also increased from the original 83 battalion to 125 battalion, because a battalion-level tactical group usually has as many as 700 to 800 people, equivalent to 90,000 people. The troops are ready to send troops.

CNN said, "New satellite imagery shows how quickly Russian helicopter forces have assembled near Ukraine's eastern border and in Russian-controlled Crimea, a U.S. Defense Department official told CNN that about half of Russian troops near Ukraine are now on the attacking position they speak of."

The United States warned that Russia could directly attack Ukraine with almost no warning. The British Ministry of Defense also revealed 7 routes that the Russian army might invade. There are one to three routes to attack Kiev from north to south. Two of them are going south from Belarus. There are three routes from western Russia to attack the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro, and a seventh route from Crimea northwards towards the strategic Black Sea port of Odessa.

Under the tense situation, the United States sent F-35 Lightning II fighter jets to Europe to strengthen NATO defense. U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris even came to Europe to participate in the Munich Security Conference to discuss how to deal with the situation in Ukraine.

Wide-body converted cargo aircraft that is in demand in the market. These demands include orders last year from ATSG, the world's leading freighter lessor, and DHL, which placed its largest order to date for the 767-300BCF.

Unlike Boeing's original freighters, which are manufactured through assembly lines located in the United States, these modified freighter orders need to be completed on the modification line jointly by Boeing and partners around the world, requiring the fuselage of the passenger aircraft to be cut, the portholes closed and the cargo compartment re-laid deck, etc.

A330P2F and B767-300ERF as competitors

Airbus' A330-300P2F and Boeing 767-300ERF, a medium-sized freighter currently favoured by Chinese air cargo companies, are relatively close in range and payload, and become direct competitors. According to the leasing company, it is hoped that the modification of this batch of A330P2Fs will be completed at multiple production facilities including Germany, the United States and China.

As Boeing, which has already carried out the "passenger-to-cargo" business in China, adding more conversion lines can not only increase production capacity, help airlines fill the capacity gap faster, but also may help to obtain more orders. YTO Cargo Airlines engages in the modification of Boeing passenger aircraft without Boeing's approval

Image : Researcher's Picture

In addition, because the technical threshold of "passenger-to-cargo" is not too high, some third-party companies are also engaged in the modification of Boeing passenger aircraft outside the scope of Boeing's authorization, and have actually become Boeing's competitors. For example, YTO Cargo Airlines, the latest Chinese company to start operating 767 modified freighters, its first aircraft to start operating in early 2022 is the 767-300BDSF modified by Israel Aerospace, not the modified 767-300ERF officially authorized by Boeing.

In the competitive aircraft modification business, A321 is also modified to create A321P2F

Competition will also continue to the narrow-body aircraft modification business. In addition to the A330P2F, Airbus also launched its most popular large-scale narrow-body aircraft, the A321, into the "passenger-to-cargo" market to create the A321P2F model. Obviously, it hopes to use the success of this model in the passenger field to continue to be used in freight.

Boeing goes further in the narrow-body aircraft conversion business

However, Boeing has gone further in the narrow-body aircraft conversion business. At present, the main capacity of China's air cargo companies is composed of modified Boeing 737-300 and -400 series, as well as 757 series passenger-to-cargo models.

Under the layout of as many as 12 737-800BCF conversion lines, and the market foundation of the 737-800 model in the Chinese passenger transport field, Boeing also has a first-mover advantage in the narrow-body aircraft "passenger-to-cargo" field.

"14th Five-Year Plan" presents new opportunities for aviation growth in China

In fact, in the rapid growth cycle of China's civil aviation industry over the past two decades, the imbalance in the development of passenger and cargo business has become the main driving force behind China's increased efforts to develop air cargo.

In the "14th Five-Year Plan" Aviation Logistics Development Special Plan (hereinafter referred to as the "Plan") officially released by the Civil Aviation Administration of China on 16 February 2022, it is clearly pointed out that the development of the aviation logistics industry is important for promoting the formation of a strong domestic market and in-depth participation. International division of labour and cooperation, ensuring the stability of the international supply chain, serving the implementation of major national strategies, and achieving high-quality national economic development are of great significance.

Air freight rates spike during the pandemic

Especially since the outbreak of the covid epidemic in early 2020, the lack of capacity due to the sudden drop in flight volume has not only pushed up air freight rates, but also further highlighted the value of air cargo in the entire supply chain. Therefore, a series of promotions, Regulations and policies to ensure the operation of air logistics have been promulgated one after another, and a large number of enterprises and local governments have participated in the establishment of air cargo enterprises.

Cargo traffic in Asia-Pacific grows by 3.6% annually

It is because of this enthusiasm that aircraft manufacturers have more confidence. According to a market forecast report previously released by Airbus, cargo traffic in the Asia-Pacific region will grow at an annual rate of 3.6%, much higher than the global average of 3.1%, and will lead to a doubling of air cargo traffic in the region by 2040.

Airbus China CEO: Express freight to grow by 4.7% annually

"Globally, express freight driven by e-commerce will grow at an annual rate of 4.7%." Xu Gang, Airbus Global Executive Vice President and CEO of China, accepted an interview with China Times on February 17. In an exclusive interview with the media, he said, "We predict that the world will need 2,440 freighters in the next two decades, of which China alone will need about 600."

Demand for 1,720 converted freighters in the next 20 years

Boeing's "2021 Boeing Commercial Aviation Market Outlook" also predicts that the global market will require 1,720 converted freighters in the next 20 years. Airlines in the Asia-Pacific region will require 505 large and medium wide-body freighters, both converted and factory, by 2040.

News (28)

Airbus continues to stimulate air cargo traffic growth in China

China's new goal in air cargo has become an opportunity for manufacturers to gain more market share, whether it is for Boeing, which is currently in the leading position, or for Airbus, which hopes to change the pattern and become more present in the freighter market. in this way.

Xu Gang told a reporter from China Times that Airbus currently occupies 55% of China's single-aisle aircraft market and 60% of wide-body aircraft but the overall market share is only 53% and we want to change that.”

In the newly released "Plan", the industry management agency set a target for China's air cargo and mail traffic to increase from 6.77 million tons in 2020 to 9.5 million tons in 2025, of which the international cargo and mail traffic volume target is 3.3 million tons. The air cargo and mail turnover target is to increase from the current 24 billion ton-km to 34.5 billion ton-km by 2025. Among them, the international cargo and mail turnover will increase from 17.2 billion ton-km in 2020 to 25.1 billion ton-km in 2025.

In addition, the "Planning" also proposes to increase China's current top 20 air cargo hub airports in the world from the current three to four by 2025, and to increase the airline's cargo and mail turnover in the world's top ten companies from 1 in 2020 to 5 in 2025.

Behind these goals, it is precisely the crisis brought about by the fact that the domestic aviation industry has maintained a high-speed development of the passenger business for a long time, and has not paid much attention to the cargo business, and has hindered the security of the supply chain at a critical moment.

News (29)

There is room for future growth space in domestic all-cargo traffic in China

Many people, including industry authorities and airlines, have reflected on the development of domestic air cargo in the supply chain crisis after the epidemic. The general view is that the number of domestic all-cargo aircraft is insufficient, and the volume and accessibility of air cargo range carried in the market is rather limited.

Image : Researcher's Picture

At present, the largest domestic air cargo company, SF Airlines, has a fleet of only 68 aircraft, which is significantly lower than that of several large air cargo giants in the world. Therefore, the future growth space is obviously an opportunity for aircraft manufacturers.

Compared with Boeing, which currently occupies an absolute market advantage, Airbus obviously wants to replicate its story of coming from behind in the passenger market, and will greatly increase the market share of freighters in the next period.

News (30)

A330P2F will trigger "passenger-to-cargo" air traffic growth in China, so is A350F

"For the Chinese market, the development potential of the A330P2F passenger-to-freighter aircraft is very large. China currently operates more than 230 cash A330ceo aircraft, which is a large source of aircraft, and they will gradually enter the passenger-to-cargo market. .” Xu Gang told the reporter of “China Times” in an exclusive interview on 17 February 2022, “China’s modification cost and quality are also very attractive. There are many companies with professional and technical capabilities in China, they can supplement the type certificate (STC). ) holders to negotiate on the passenger-to-cargo cooperation of related aircraft types.”

In Xu Gang's view, China has a strong market demand for air cargo, and it also has cost advantages. The time is right and the place is right. "I think the cargo market will develop very well. I believe that Airbus' passenger-to-freighter and brand new A350F freighter product will also shine in the coming years."
