Two Chinese cities, Suzhou and Dalian, have reported two new Omicron subtypes.

A new subtype of the highly transmissible Omicron variant has been found near Shanghai, where residents are currently under a lockdown.

The new covi variant subtype was reported by municipal authorities in Suzhou, a city that borders Shanghai, on 2 April 2022. The strain was isolated from a local infected patient with the surname Yang  in Changshu City, Suzhou, on 28 March 2022.

Municipal officials said the isolated virus had evolved from the BA.1.1 branch of the Omicron variant. What is more, the subtype did not match other covi variants already found in China, nor those found in the public virus tracking database GISAID.

Meanwhile, health officials in Dalian, a port city in northeastern China’s Liaoning Province, also found a new subtype from a local infected patient on 1 April 2022, according to China’s state-run media. The strain was said to not match any covi variant found in China and had evolved from the BA.2 branch of the Omicron variant.

Since the onset of the covid pandemic, there are now thousands of covi variants around the world. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), BA.1, BA.1.1, and BA.2 are the three most common lineages of the Omicron variant.

BA.2 is "the predominant variant" of the world

The World Health Organization (WHO), in its weekly epidemiological report published on 22 March 2022, declared that BA.2 had become “the predominant variant” around the world. The BA.2 stain has been nicknamed the “stealth variant” because it contains mutations that make it harder to detect.

The BA.1 strain was responsible for a large number of infections in the United States in late 2021. Now, BA.2, which is known to be more transmissible than BA.1 and BA.1.1, makes up the majority of new infections (54.9 percent) in the United States, the CDC announced on 29 March 2022.

CCP continues to under-report confirmed covid cases

CCP initially treated asymptomatic infections as part of confirmed cases when the Wuhan epidemic broke out in late 2019  but the National Health Commission decided to separate asymptomatic infections from confirmed covid cases in March 2020 to lower the number of confirmed cases and declare CCP China as the victor of the epidemic. Many asymptomatic cases turned confirmed cases were under-reported.

Caixin exposes the tragedy of Shanghai Donghai nursing home, secretly carrying the bodies in the middle of the night

A large-scale covid outbreak occurred in Shanghai Donghai Elderly Care Hospital, and medical staff and nurses were transferred and quarantined. An article published by Caixin on the 2nd revealed that some elderly people were dry with no care. After some elderly people died, they were taken away with their names written in a yellow bag. The report has now been deleted.

On 2 April 2022, Caixin.com published a report titled "The Novel Coronavirus Invades Donghai Nursing Home", saying that a temporary isolation and treatment center is currently being built on the open space adjacent to the southern part of Shanghai Donghai Nursing Hospital. Hundreds of rooms.

The staff said that the isolation point is mainly used to treat mild patients in Donghai Elderly Care Hospital and surrounding areas.

Hospital staff admitted that there are indeed infected people in the hospital, including nurses and patients. In recent days, covid-positive patients have been transferred one after another, and the transfer has not yet been completed.

Doctors and nurses have been infected and isolated one after another, and there is a shortage of human resources in the hospital. Most of the patients or the elderly are unable to take care of themselves, and their living security is insufficient. The management of the temporarily recruited nurses is scattered, and the normal nursing order is being affected.

Several family members of the patients told Caixin, "We don't know exactly when the infection started and how many people were infected."

The phone calls of the staff in the hospital are mostly unanswered, and the communication is not smooth. It is difficult for the family members to know the exact situation in the hospital. Family members outside the hospital and escorts in the hospital who were deeply anxious broke the news on Weibo, "A cluster infection occurred in Donghai Hospital."

On 31 March, a family member of a patient said, "The epidemic prevention of Shanghai Donghai Elderly Care Hospital is out of control, and more than half of the doctors, nurses and nurses have been taken out for isolation. The 96-year-old grandmother is paralyzed in bed with no one to take care of!  …"

On 30 March, some netizens in Shanghai also disclosed that Donghai Aged Care Hospital recruited housekeeping aunts. After the aunts arrived on the evening of the 28th, they found that a large number of elderly people in the hospital were covid-positive, and all the medical staff were infected and sent to isolation. The hospital has no toilet and no place to live.

A nurse said, "I was one of the victims. On the first day we entered the hospital, the hospital lured us into the intensive care area with our luggage to eat and live with the positive patients. The elderly inside were living extremely badly, and elderly people died every day." .

The ward is chaotic, nurses and patients share room and board

Caixin.com said that in late March, an intermediary company in Shanghai posted a "high-paying" job posting in a social group saying that the Shanghai isolation hospital recruited 200 cleaners, and the salary was 300 yuan a day, and the intermediary had to pay referral fee or 1,000-3,000 RMB.

On March 28, cleaning worker Xiao Jie and more than 40 workers entered the Donghai Elderly Care Hospital. Before entering the ward, Xiaojie only received simple protection training, and no one explained the precautions for elderly care, and the elderly did not have a doctor's order card.

Xiaojie said: "We don't know what the needs of the elderly are, nor how to take care of them."

Xiaojie was assigned to 6 wards. Ward 6 has more than 10 rooms, and a suite has about 5-6 patients. The patients are almost over 70 years old, and most of them are paralyzed in bed.

Xiaojie said: "There are very few doctors and nurses in this ward, and many elderly people are left unattended. When I first arrived, some elderly people asked the nurses for food, and some elderly people dried their feces and urine on their butts." "Most elderly people A gastric tube is required, some nurses can’t, and the elderly can only starve.”

The elderly in Ward 9 also mentioned that the medical staff in the original ward had been evacuated, and there was no one to take care of them in the ward. Later, a group of new nurses were dispatched, and the handover was not done well. It was very difficult for the elderly in the hospital to communicate with these foreign nurses. The situation in the area is chaotic.

Xiaojie mentioned that when entering the ward for the first time, in addition to wearing protective clothing normally, the nurses had no awareness of protection and lived with the patient. It was only later that I learned that many patients in the room were positive, some of them had been taken away for isolation, and the others remained in the room.

In the hospital, two nurses were required to take shifts to take care of the elderly in the same suite, and to eat and live together.

On 31 March, Xiaojie arrived in the ward for the third day. The ward corridor was piled up with rubbish, and no one took it away. Xiaojie said that that morning, an old man in Ward 6 died.

A Ward 9 nurse said she had carried an 87-year-old deceased out of the ward at 3 am, noting that nearly a dozen bodies were still stored in the morgue.

The bodies of the elderly were scattered and sent to different funeral homes in Pudong. In the morning of 1 April 2022, the Pudong Funeral Home said that there were more than a dozen bodies from the Donghai Nursing Home, and other bodies were placed in the Nanhui Funeral Home.

A family member of the deceased elderly confirmed to Caixin that he was informed that his father had died in the Donghai Elderly Care Hospital, but his body had not yet been seen.

Xiaojie said that the management of the temporarily recruited nurses is also very scattered, and they are in a state of no fixed leadership.

A number of nurses said that they were taken into the hospital "in a daze" and hoped to leave as soon as possible; if they were unable to leave due to the lockdown, they also hoped to have a better living environment and isolation guarantee.

On 31 March, a nurse said that the hospital had agreed to send some nurses out of the hospital.

Another Fudan expert opposes political epidemic prevention and supports virus coexistence theory

Image : On the Internet, Sun Xiaofeng, the deputy chief physician of Huashan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University, gave advice to the authorities, including stopping all staff testing and stopping the shutdown of the whole society. (Fudan University official website)

The CCP's "movement-style" city closure has been constantly questioned by domestic intellectuals. Following a recording that revealed that experts from the Shanghai CDC were dissatisfied with the authorities' political epidemic prevention, Fudan Sun Xiaofeng, deputy chief physician of Huashan Hospital affiliated to the university, gave advice to the authorities, including stopping all staff testing, stopping the shutdown of the whole society, and introducing American vaccines.

The document titled "220402 Several Opinions of Commissioner Sun Xiaofeng" lists 6 points, which roughly include:

1. In March, the total number of infected people in the country was 103,000, and the sample was large enough to be statistically significant. Among them, there are no severe cases, and the rate of mild cases is very low. Based on the opinions of some domestic and foreign experts, "the virus has a strong will to coexist with humans."

2. For asymptomatic infected persons and close contacts, self-isolation at home is more effective than centralized isolation, and it also avoids a run on medical resources in Fangcang cabins.

3. It is recommended to stop nucleic acid testing and screening for all employees.

4. It is recommended to stop the shutdown of the whole society and resume normal social operations as soon as possible.

5. It is recommended to introduce Pfizer's mRNA vaccine, with an efficiency of 67%, which can be used as the third and fourth injections for protection.

6. Strengthen personal protection publicity, and publicize what needs to be done by citizens. The whole society builds an immune barrier together.

According to the data, Sun Xiaofeng is the vice president and deputy chief physician of the Pudong branch of Huashan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University, and a member of the Shanghai CPPCC.

Sun Xiaofeng's proposal document went viral on Weibo, and it also triggered attacks from many little pinkies. The content of Sun Xiaofeng's suggestion is quite similar to that of Zhang Wenhong, director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University.

Zhang Wenhong has always been an authority figure in Shanghai's epidemic prevention and control, but he did not appear at the Shanghai epidemic prevention and control conference for many days.

At the end of July 2021, Zhang Wenhong put forward the view of "coexistence with the virus" in line with the world, and was subsequently criticized by a group of official background figures such as former CCP Health Minister Gao Qiang. On 2 April, a video of Zhang Wenhong's speech on "coexistence with the virus" was uploaded on Twitter, but the exact time and place were unknown.

Zhang Wenhong said that if there is a complete lockdown and everyone stays at home, the epidemic can indeed be stopped, but how many people will die. Because without circulation, there would be no economy, people would lose their jobs and rebel, which would bring huge social problems.

Consensus on the "flu" nature of Omicron in Shanghai

Some Weibo netizens left a message saying that Zhu Weiping and Sun Xiaofeng's comments and suggestions marked the formation of a consensus among the people in Shanghai: this round of Omicron virus is of a "flu" nature, and the best measure for asymptomatic infection is not to focus on pulling it to the square cabin hospital and it is home isolation and rest. The resources required for the reset measures are seriously insufficient, and the social shutdown will do more harm than good.

Shanghai resident Ji Xiaolong issued a letter of decree pointing to "sports-style epidemic prevention"

Recently, with the surging covid epidemic in Shanghai, public grievances caused by the strict quarantine measures have also begun to heat up. A few days ago, Ji Xiaolong, a Shanghai resident, published a "please order" on the Internet, criticizing the party and government officials of the current Shanghai government for "only flattering the will of the upper class" and despising public opinion, demanding that these officials be dismissed and stop "movement-style epidemic prevention." ".

On 2 April, a Shanghai resident who signed Ji Xiaolong posted a "letter for the people" on Twitter, an overseas online social platform, as a Shanghai citizen, demanding that "exercise-style epidemic prevention" be stopped immediately, and The government pays for "relief and relief".

At the beginning of this "letter of decree", he bluntly criticized the "dynamic clearing" policy, saying that it had led to the decline of all industries and the hardship of people's livelihood. Several elderly and infants died due to lack of timely medical treatment, even under long-term high-pressure measures. There have been multiple suicides.

The "letter of order" then pointed at local government officials, criticizing that the current party and government officials in Shanghai were appointed by the central government and were not recognized by the people. "Investigation is the implementation of high-pressure sealing and control" is a serious dereliction of duty, and these officials should be held accountable for their "collective governance responsibility."

In the article, Ji Xiaolong appealed on behalf of "the general public and people living in Shanghai" to "immediately dismiss the current government's party and government officials, and quickly convene the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress to elect a new party and government officials."

He believes that the new government officials "must have lived in Shanghai for more than 10 years" in order to "have the emotional foundation for local governance" and gain the basic trust of Shanghai residents.

The "Letter of Appointment" also proposes to suspend the "zero-covid" policy, restore the policy of scientific and rational prevention and control of the epidemic, and provide suspension allowances to all residents, migrant workers, and those who have lost their jobs due to the epidemic to all residents who have suffered from the blind closure and control policies. Rent for all industrial and commercial enterprises and vendors during the lockdown period, as well as proposals to limit rent increases, reduce or exempt corporate and personal income tax, etc.

Ji Xiaolong also specifically proposed in the article to "immediately release those detained for exercising the right to freedom of speech during the epidemic, pardon those detained for mild excesses, and compensate them for the physical and psychological damage they suffered due to excessive law enforcement." , as well as paying compensation to the families of those who died due to the lockdown and accusation without receiving timely medical treatment, paying compensation to the families of those who committed suicide due to the closure and accusation, and making a public apology.

On 3 April, Ji Xiaolong tweeted, "On the second day after the order was issued, Weibo was blocked."

On the same day, Ji Xiaolong said in an interview with Taiwan Central News Agency by phone that this "please order" was indeed written by him.

He said that the sensitive political demands mentioned in the "please order" "may be risky", but he believes that even if the Shanghai government implements the orders of the central government, "it should listen to public opinion", and he also believes that there are many public servants here. You may also feel helpless in a round of anti-epidemic actions.

According to public information, Ji Xiaolong is from Suzhou, Jiangsu Province but has lived in Shanghai for a long time. He was imprisoned for three and a half years for launching the "toilet revolution", and was released from prison on 9 February 2022.

Official documents circulated on the Internet Zhejiang ordered 6 cities to build 30,000 isolation points to receive Shanghai residents

The outbreak in Shanghai is out of control, and the authorities ordered the country to help. According to a notice on the Internet, Zhejiang also ordered 6 cities under its jurisdiction to build isolation points for people in Shanghai. Critics pointed out that the authorities followed the Xi'an model, and Shanghai may have a large number of people isolated in different places.

On 3 April, a "Notice on the Centralized Quarantine of People Transferred from Shanghai to Hangzhou and Other 6 Cities" was posted on the Chinese Internet, with the word "Urgent" on it. After the notice came out, it was quickly blocked.

The notice is suspected to have been issued by the Zhejiang Provincial Government of the Communist Party of China. According to the "overall arrangement" of the Beijing authorities, the Zhejiang authorities ordered 6 prefecture-level cities including Hangzhou, Ningbo, Huzhou, Shaoxing, Jinhua, and Taizhou to provide isolation places and prepare to receive close contacts from Shanghai and secondary liaisons.

The notice stated, "It is planned to transfer 10,000 people to Hangzhou and Ningbo, 2,000 to Huzhou and Taizhou, and 3,000 to Shaoxing and Jinhua; Hangzhou and Ningbo must be transferred on 3 April. Before 12:00 noon, prepare the first batch of 5,000 people for isolation."

The notice also requires each of the six cities to identify a liaison officer and to "report the list to our office" before 11 am on 3 April.

In this wave of epidemics in Shanghai, tens of thousands of people were officially reported to be infected. Because the Chinese government generally conceals the epidemic, the actual number of infections may be higher. The resulting number of close contacts will be even greater.

Beijing seeks Shanghai's assistance on nucleic acid testing operation

Writer and commentator Chen Feng told Radio Free Asia that Beijing had asked for assistance from all over Shanghai in the largest-ever nucleic acid testing operation. At the same time, the CCP adopts the remote isolation model in Xi'an, and it is possible that up to hundreds of thousands of Shanghainese will be transported to Zhejiang, Jiangsu and other places for centralized isolation.

When the epidemic broke out in Xi'an this year, local officials isolated a large number of people in different places, creating a so-called "social clearing", which was criticized by netizens as "covering up to zero".

Chen Feng pointed out that this approach is actually very ignorant, because the virus is very infectious, and such large-scale remote isolation can easily cause cross-infection and accelerate the spread of the epidemic.

CCP regards "coexistence with the virus" as concept of "lying flat"

Chen Feng said that the CCP refers to the "coexistence with the virus" in Europe and the United States as "lying flat", and has repeatedly emphasized the "success" of Beijing's epidemic prevention, trying to prove its strong mobilization and organizational strength to emphasize the "superiority" of the system. So many of its epidemic prevention actions have been reduced to performances, all of which are determination, slogans, and this is the situation.

The local case increase continues to be high, the "new Taiwan model" epidemic prevention relaxes the isolation of mild cases

The number of local cases in Taiwan continues to increase. On 3 April, the President of the Republic of China Legislative Yuan, Su Zhenchang, further explained the "New Taiwan Model" that takes into account both epidemic prevention and economy.

For three consecutive days, the number of new local cases in Taiwan exceeded 100 in a single day. On 3 April, 183 new local cases were added, a new high this year.

Minister of Health and Welfare and Commander of the Central Epidemic Command Centre Chen Shizhong said frankly that when the number of new cases reaches 100, due to limited human resources, the speed of epidemic response will begin to slow down; if you want to rely entirely on health personnel, the speed will be insufficient.

In order to avoid insufficient medical resources, the command center relaxes the isolation of those diagnosed with mild symptoms. The second Ct value of the test results exceeds 30, and the isolation can be released without isolation for ten days.

Chen Shizhong commented, "In fact, there are relatively many mild and asymptomatic cases, so our focus is on the moderate and severe cases. Today (reported) Although there were many cases yesterday, we are currently in moderate and severe cases. It didn't increase."

Chen Shizhong said that the current epidemic prevention strategy is to "actively prevent epidemics while approaching normal life", that is, while the necessary behaviors and activities of the people are not restricted, in addition to the government's responsibility, the next step is to rely on individual self-responsibility and corporate responses to cooperate with each other. Do a good job in epidemic prevention.

The command centre eased restrictions on epidemic prevention, and Taipei Mayor Ko Wenzhe suggested that the central government formulate standards for medical tolerable boundaries.

Taipei Mayor Ko Wenzhe said, "I know that the central government's decision today means that he believes that the number of confirmed cases will continue to rise, so there is no way to use strict standards. If we want strict standards, the capacity must be very large, and we must set it first. , We allow the number of confirmed cases to increase every day, which is tolerable for the entire medical capacity of Taiwan, and this will probably have to be decided first."

On 1 April, Su Zhenchang proposed the "New Taiwan Model" of "parallel epidemic prevention and economy". On the 3rd, he further explained this. He said that although the number of confirmed cases has increased, 99.7 % are mild or asymptomatic, so don't worry, be healthy and open to a normal life.

Wu Zhaoxie: Taiwan has the determination to defend itself, democracy will defeat dictatorship

Reporter : Zhong Yuan /  Editor : Ye Ziwei / https://www.epochtimes.com/gb/22/4/4/n13694128.htm / Images : On 31 March 2022, Wu Zhaoxie, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China, explained Taiwan Strait relations to Philip Sherwell, the Asia correspondent of the British Sunday Times. (Provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs)

In an exclusive interview with foreign media, Wu Zhaoxie, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China, pointed out that in the face of the threat of the CCP, "We have the determination to strengthen self-defense, and are convinced that democracy will eventually prevail. Victory over tyranny."

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China stated that Minister Wu Zhaoxie gave an exclusive video interview with Philip Sherwell, the Asia correspondent of the British "Sunday Times" (The Sunday Times) on 31 March 2022, and explained in depth the situation in Russia and Ukraine, the threat of the CCP, and the assistance of the Republic of China to Ukraine. , Taiwan-UK relations, and Taiwan's international participation.

Wu Zhaoxie said that both Taiwan and Ukraine are on the front line against authoritarianism. While European countries are facing military challenges from Russia, the CCP continues to expand its influence in Indo-Pacific, Africa and Europe. The existence of Taiwan is not only about our sovereignty and freedom the maintenance of the democratic way of life is also crucial to the survival of global democracy.

"China (the Communist Party) must pay close attention to the Russia-Ukraine war, and may re-evaluate its ability to commit crimes against Taiwan and the response of the international community." He emphasized that the global democratic camp must be united, and he believes that the Russia-Ukraine war will make more and more countries understand Taiwan. importance and promote support for Taiwan.

Wu Zhaoxie analyzed that the situation between Taiwan and Ukraine is not the same, including that Taiwan and China are separated by a sea, and Taiwan plays a key role in the global high-tech supply chain, which increases the cost of China's invasion of Taiwan. However, the overall combat power of the CCP is better than that of Russia. Taiwan has gained profound inspiration from Ukraine’s experience as a small country successfully defending against a powerful enemy.

"Taiwan will continue to strive to develop asymmetric combat power, while strengthening national defense capabilities, and conducting security dialogues with the United States and other countries." He said that the Biden-Harris administration sent a delegation of former high-level security officials to visit Taiwan shortly after the war, which fully demonstrated support for Taiwan. "We have a firm determination to defend ourselves and are convinced that democracy will eventually triumph over authoritarianism."

He explained that the CCP adopts gray zone tactics. In the past year, it dispatched nearly 1,000 military planes to disrupt Taiwan, and used information warfare, cognitive warfare, and cyber warfare to conduct non-traditional security threats. Taiwan is now actively sharing experiences with European countries on disinformation, cognitive warfare, cyber attacks, and hybrid warfare, so as to learn from each other and jointly face new types of security threats. The Russia-Ukraine war has strengthened Taiwan's ties and cooperation with the world's democracies, while strengthening common strategic interests. Taiwan has a responsibility to safeguard democracy for the international community.

Wu Zhaoxie pointed out that in addition to Taiwan joining democratic countries to impose economic sanctions on Russia, the people of Taiwan are deeply moved by the courageous resistance and self-defense determination of the Ukrainian people, and they have actively donated funds and humanitarian aid materials worth 11 million US dollars and more than 600 tons of aid materials have demonstrated their assistance to Ukrainian refugees with concrete actions.

In addition, he said that the United Kingdom recently released an "Integrated Policy Analysis Report" to express its "Indo-Pacific" policy, which means that the United Kingdom pays more attention to the Indo-Pacific region and its relations with countries in the region. The United Kingdom has also sent a fleet to carry out "freedom of navigation" missions in the Indo-Pacific region, and has reached an "Australia-UK-US Tripartite Security Partnership" (AUKUS) with the United States and Australia, showing that the United Kingdom intends to play a more active role in the region.

He thanked Britain for its deep friendship with Taiwan and actively supported Taiwan's participation in the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international organizations. Taiwan looks forward to continuing to deepen cooperation with the UK and to develop steadily and steadily in the fields of trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges.

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the British "Sunday Times" was established in 1822 and is a sister newspaper of "The Times". It is one of the mainstream newspapers with a long history in the United Kingdom.

Pentagon: "No offensive biologic weapons" in Ukraine laboratories funded by the U.S.

Reporter : Katabella Roberts, The Epoch Times PREMIUM

There are “no offensive biologic weapons” in the Ukraine laboratories that the United States has been funding, a Pentagon official told Congress on 1 April 2022.

Deborah Rosenbaum, the assistant secretary of defense for nuclear, chemical, and biological defense programs, told the House Subcommittee on Intelligence and Special Operations on Friday that there are “unequivocally …  no offensive biologic weapons in the Ukraine laboratories that the United States has been involved with.”

The Pentagon funds labs in Ukraine through its Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), a support agency within the Department of Defense for countering weapons of mass destruction, and both U.S and Ukraine officials say the labs seek to prevent bioweapons and pathogens.

According to a Pentagon fact sheet released in March (pdf), since 2005, the United States has “invested approximately $200 million in Ukraine … supporting 46 Ukrainian laboratories, health facilities, and diagnostic sites.”

The Biological Threat Reduction Program has “improved Ukraine’s biological safety, security, and surveillance for both human and animal health,” the Pentagon fact sheet states.

However, Russia has in recent months accused the U.S.-funded laboratories in Ukraine of developing biological warfare weapons. Such allegations were being aired on Russian state-run media even prior to the Moscow-led invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24.

The Russian Ministry of Defense on March 6 issued a statement on Telegram accusing Ukraine of having destroyed disease-causing pathogens being studied at a lab in Ukraine that the ministry said is funded by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Russia’s allegations regarding the biological laboratories appeared to be repeated by the Chinese regime on March 7.

The World Health Organization confirmed in March that it advised the Ministry of Health in Ukraine to destroy “high-threat pathogens to prevent any potential spills.”

But analysts believe that the narrative being pushed by the Kremlin is part of its plan to create a false-flag operation in an attempt to justify using chemical weapons operations in Ukraine itself.

Rosenbaum told officials on Friday that, “the department remains very concerned about the ability to get accurate and transparent information out to the U.S. public, as well as certainly our allies and the rest of the world.”

Another 42 genes linked to Alzheimer's disease found

Reporter : John Ally, Daily Mail

Another 42 genes linked to Alzheimer's have been found by scientists, in what they claim is a major discovery from the biggest study of its kind.

Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, and slowly robs people of their memories and independence. No cure exists yet, although drugs can help alleviate some of the symptoms but experts say the new findings could could open the door to new ways of treating the disease.

An international team of scientists discovered 75 regions of DNA linked to the cruel disease. These included 42 genetic quirks never before linked to Alzheimer's.

They have also developed a genetic risk score to evaluate which at risk patients are most likely to go on to develop the disease within three years.

Experts welcomed the new study as providing another "piece of the puzzle" of what causes the disease but added it will take more work to turn this into new treatments for patients.

A plethora of research has indicated that an individual's genes can increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's, with the disease known to run in families.

Dr Rebecca Sims, co-author from Cardiff University, claimed the findings more than 'double the number of identified genes' thought to influence the risk of Alzheimer's.

She said, "It provides exciting new targets for therapeutic intervention and advances our ability to develop algorithms to predict who will develop Alzheimer's in later life."

Cardiff's Professor Julie Williams another author of the study added, "This is a landmark study in the field of Alzheimer’s research and is the culmination of 30 years’ work.

"The results support our growing knowledge that Alzheimer’s disease is an extremely complex condition, with multiple triggers, biological pathways and cell types involved in its development."

She added that while lifestyle factors like smoking, exercise and diet influence our risk of developing  Alzheimer’s, human genes were the single most important factor.

"60-80 per cent of disease risk is based on our genetics and therefore we must continue to seek out the biological causes and develop much-needed treatments for the millions of people affected worldwide," she said.

The UK experts carried out the research alongside colleagues from the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research.

They analysed genomes, the total genetic instructions that make a person who they are, of just over 111,000 people with Alzheimer's disease and 677,000 healthy controls.

Some of these genes were found to play a role in the two proteins which build-up in the brains of people with Alzheimer's: amyloid-beta and tau.

Other genes were found to be related to a dysfunction of the body's immune system and mircogila — an immune cell in the nervous system that normally clears away the build-up of toxic materials in the brain.

Researchers also found genes governing the activation of a protein called tumor necrosis factor alpha, which is involved in triggering inflammation in the body, is also linked to Alzheimer's disease.

The researchers published their genetic findings — dubbed a "major discovery" — in the journal Nature Genetics.

Lead author Dr Jean-Charles Lambert claimed their work would help scientists learn more about the biological mechanisms at play in Alzheimer's.

Dr Lambert revealed how they used the findings to create a genetic risk score, which could predict which patients will be struck down with Alzheimer's.

While not yet ready for use as a clinical tool, the neuroscientist claimed it could help spot patients who may see the most benefit from drug trials.

Dr Susan Kohlhaas, director of research at Alzheimer's Research UK, welcomed the new study.

"Creating an extensive list of Alzheimer's disease risk genes is like having the edge pieces of a puzzle put together," she said.

"And while this work doesn't give us the full picture, it provides a valuable framework for future developments.

"The research also, however, tells us just how complex Alzheimer's is, with several different mechanisms implicated in the development of the disease.

"It's going to take a concerted and global effort to develop life-changing treatments.

"But this seminal study also gives us hope that research will win, and it gives us the opportunity to work on new treatment targets."

The new research has some limitations, one of which is that the genes analysed were from primarily Caucasian populations.

Therefore, the results may be of limited use for other groups.

This is something the researchers say they wish to expand upon in further studies.

Around 850,000 Britons and 5.8million Americans have Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's is characterised by the build-up of toxic proteins in the brain that cause cells to die and for parts of the organ to shrink.

Alzheimer's disease is most common in people over the age of 65 although people can develop it earlier.

While there is no cure, medications are available to combat some of the symptoms.
