The Kuomintang (KMT) has recruited New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi to run for the 2024 presidential election, and Ko Wen-je, chairman of the People's Party, has also been nominated by the party. Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) chairman and presidential candidate Lai Ching-te said that this is a democratic unity movement that builds consensus in Taiwan. He hopes that the candidates of all political parties can reach a consensus on three points, including ensuring sovereignty, respecting diversity and caring for the weak, and playing a more important role in the free and democratic camp.

According to DPP spokesman Zhang Zhihao, Lai Ching-te expressed at the regular meeting of the DPP in the afternoon that the election is getting closer and candidates from various parties are also emerging. He sincerely hopes that this election process will be a healthy competition and that all political parties nominating candidates can agree on the following three points.”

First of all, the process and results of this election must ensure that the sovereignty of  the Republic of China Taiwan will not be eroded, and the free and democratic constitutional system will not be destroyed. This is the basic mission of the country's leaders and must be adhered to.

Second, respecting diversity, caring for the disadvantaged, and building a just society are the most beautiful values in Taiwan. Politics is not for the minority, but for the majority of ordinary people. The direction of politics cannot be deviated, it must be steady and right.

Third, Taiwan is a member of the international community, an important partner of the freedom and democracy camp, and plays an important role in the global industrial division of labour and the development of smart technology.

Lai Ching-te pointed out that the consensus view of the international community on Taiwan is that a reliable partner and a vibrant democracy are the brand values of Taiwan, which not only bring economic prosperity to Taiwan, but also bring democratic guarantees to Taiwan. The results of this election will tell the world whether the brand value continues to increase, whether this democratic society is still full of vitality and is not afraid of difficulties, and whether the people on this land are always kind, tenacious, optimistic and positive.

Lai Ching-te said that he expects all opponents participating in this election to have the above recognition and mission, " Under such a premise, this is not an election where one wins and who loses, but a democratic unity movement that gathers consensus in Taiwan. God bless Taiwan ,Thank you everyone."

The Central Committee of the KMT today nominated New Taipei Mayor Hou Youyi to run for the 2024 presidential election. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan'an posted on Facebook in the afternoon that Hou You-yi is a visionary leader and the soul of Jibeibeitao’s regional governance At the same time, he pays tribute to the founder of Hon Hai, Terry Gou, who believes that Terry Gou always remembers the Republic of China and is a world-class leader recognized by the people. He will unite and win back Taiwan together in 2024.

Chiang Wan'an said that Hou You-yi in his heart is a decent, courageous, pragmatic and far-sighted leader, and he is also the soul of Jibeibeitao's regional governance. At the beginning of October last year, he went to Shenzhen, New Taipei City together with Taipei City Councilors. During more than 3 years, he observed Mayor Hou, mobilized more than 17,000 person-times, coordinated the relocation of more than 4,000 iron sheet factories, and solved urban ailments of more than 40 years. The overall planning of the 397-hectare land has turned a new page in the cityscape of New Taipei City.

Chiang said that Hou You-yi shaped the common vision of everyone through intensive and delicate social communication; and then changed the development trajectory of the city step by step through firm courage and pragmatic and efficient execution. At that time, he felt that as long as a responsible leader has a clear vision of the distant future, he will not be afraid of the challenges in front of him.

Chiang Wan'an said that this afternoon the KMT formally recruited Mayor Hou You-yi to run for president, and he was also present to witness. 17 years ago, Hou You-yi was responsible for national security. 12 years ago, he began to serve New Taipei City with a population of 4 million. Last year, he jointly launched the Jibeibeitao Cooperation and Exchange Platform with a population of nearly 10 million. Next year, he hopes that Hou will be responsible for 23 million people, the population of Taiwan.

Gou has always been thinking about the Republic of China. Even if he was not nominated, he has long been recognized by the people as a world-class leader. He hopes that all the people of the country will unite and win back the future of the country together in 2024.

In the absence of any surprises from the outside world, KMT chairman Chi Li-lun announced at the Central Standing Committee meeting this afternoon that his "hand-picked" candidate for the 2024 presidential election-Hou You-yi, Mayor of New Taipei City. Including Taipei Mayor Jiang Wan'an, Taoyuan Mayor Zhang Shanzheng, Hsinchu County Mayor Yang Wenke, Keelung Mayor Xie Guoliang and other local leaders in the blue camp participated in the rally today.
In addition, the Central Standing Committee of the Kuomintang on 17 May 2023 also passed the fifth wave of nominations for 7 legislative constituencies, including Keelung City (Lin Peixiang), Taipei 2nd Constituency (You Shuhui), Taipei 6th Constituency (Luo Zhiqiang), New Taipei City 12th Constituency (Liao Xianxiang ), the 1st constituency of Taoyuan City (Niu Xuting), the 2nd constituency of Hsinchu County (Lin Siming), and the 5th constituency of Taichung City (Huang Jianhao).
he Central Standing Committee of the Kuomintang, who originally supported Gou, intended to propose at today's Central Standing Meeting, calling on the Party Central Committee to recruit Terry Gou. However, due to the small number of signatures and the fact that Chu Lilun had already announced the call for candidates, he did not appear, and there was no support for Terry Gou at the meeting.
The Kuomintang Central Committee originally hoped that Terry Gou could arrive at the scene on 17 May, hold hands with Hou You-yi and Chi Li-lun and raise their hands, symbolizing the great unity of the Blue Army, but in the end it was still difficult to realize the dream.
KMT spokesman Yang Zhitong said that the event in the afternoon was held at the Standing Committee of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, so Terry Gou was not specially invited to participate. In the future, Terry Gou will be invited on appropriate occasions to jointly demonstrate great unity. However, it is understood that the Party Central Committee has been working hard until this morning. It is hoped that Gou can come to the scene in person. Until about 10:00 in the morning, the response to media inquiries about whether Terry Gou will be there is "not sure yet", and he revealed that he is still working hard but the situation is not optimistic.
It is understood that Hou You-yi was already firmly positioned as the "Best Actor" when Chi Li-lun proposed the term "the strongest hen" in the Blue Army. The time to insist on accepting the recruitment has not yet come, and just when it is about to become a shed for a bad show, Gou, an uninvited guest, appears, and the blue camp recruitment script is logically launched, but Gou has never escaped from the "alternative" pattern.
After setting the tone and adopting the recruitment, the Central Committee of the Kuomintang decided that the only possible candidates for the tone were Hou You-yi and Terry Gou. Wen asked.
As for the basis for enlistment, the Kuomintang does not have a set of specific rules of the game, except for the three-stage integration, reference to various opinion polls, and surveys of opinion leaders within the party. Compared with the 2020 presidential election led by former party chairman Wu Dunyi Nomination. At that time, the Central Committee of the Kuomintang passed the "Special Measures for the Nomination of Presidential Candidates for the Election of the 15th President and Vice President", the list of members of the Central Nomination Coordination Group, and the timetable for the nomination operation and the key points of the operation. It was set to entrust 5 polling agencies to implement. For polls, the number of effective samples of each company must not be less than 3,000, and the selection process for this time is completely absent.
After Chi Li-lun informed Terry Gou and Hou You-yi of the recruitment decision in person the night before, apart from the pro-Korean group that originally asked the Party Central Committee to recruit former Kaohsiung Mayor Han Guoyu to run for president, it has been transformed into a "cheering squad" that supports the Party Central Committee's decision. The press conference scheduled to be held yesterday morning and the dinner party for the Standing Committee during the evening banquet have all been cancelled.

Worried about the media being "led by the nose" by China, Truss: They want to silence those who support Taiwan
Image :  Former British Prime Minister Truss. (Photographed by reporter Luo Peide)
英國前首相特拉斯。(記者羅沛德攝)
Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss held a press conference for visiting Taiwan at noonof 17 May 2023. Pointing out that CCP China is trying to restrict similar visits, restrict people from discussing Taiwan, and silence "pro-Taiwan people", she said,  "We must fight against such bullying behavior." Letting a totalitarian state decide who can visit where is a very dangerous idea. She also said "tactfully" that sometimes the British media or the political system will "copy" Chinese expressions, and she is concerned about this; freedom of the press is very important, "the British media should be very cautious about this."
News (5)
UK newspaper questions Truss on the sucess of her Taiwan visit
The British media "Guardian" asked that the visit to Taiwan by Nancy Pelosi, then Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives last year, made Taiwan's objective security environment worse. Did this visit take this into consideration? If China expands its arms against Taiwan later, will this trip be worth it?
News (6)
Truss : We must stand up to CCP's bullying behaviour
Truss responded that she came here at the invitation of the Taiwan government. As a democratically elected government, the Taiwan government not only best represents the people of Taiwan, but also knows best what to do to help Taiwan. However, CCP China continues to try to limit similar visits to Taiwan, and even more so to limit people's discussion of Taiwan, trying to silence "pro-Taiwan supporters" and intimidating internationally, not only in the UK, but also in Taiwan. She believes that we must stand up to such bullying behaviour; otherwise, if CCP gets its way, successfully limiting Taiwan's operating space will make it easier for them to carry out their goals. Therefore, she also hopes to learn the best way to deal with it from the Taiwan government.
News (7)
Dealing with the threat of CCP expanding its influence and economy, countries should not let CCP dictate who goes to which country
Truss emphasized that when there is an authoritarian regime trying to expand its influence and the largest economy in the world in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP), we must be clear and coordinate with each other to deal with the threat.
Afterwards, some foreign media asked The Guardian how to weigh the "profit and loss" of this trip, given that after Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, the relationship between the United States and CCP China has continued to deteriorate, and the management of journalists and companies has become more dangerous. Did you coordinate with the British government in advance because of different opinions within the party? In addition, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is visiting South Korea. Have the two coordinated in advance?
In this regard, Truss asked, do we really want China to decide which politicians can visit where? She believes that allowing a totalitarian state to decide who goes where is a dangerous idea; to her, it is a restriction of basic freedoms, which is contrary to the values that we should promote.
Truss emphasized that she is in regular contact with the British government and has always coordinated with the government on her visits abroad; she will also be in regular contact with Johnson, "although I don't intend to reveal what we talked about." However, the point is that the CCP is trying to make both "visiting Taiwan" and "talking to Taiwan" taboo. What we should think about is, what is their purpose and ambition in doing so? CCP China has also generously stated that they just want Taiwan to be under Chinese Communist control, which is something she does not want to see.
Turning the subject, Truss also mentioned that she was worried that sometimes British media reports or the British political system would "copy" the Chinese Communist Party's statement, and she believed that the British media should be highly cautious about this. Truss said that if the "Guardian" was run in Beijing, it would not be as successful as it is now. "Press freedom is very precious to me."
News (8)
Truss: The UK government will do all it can to help defend Hong Kong's human rights
The media asked that the former Hong Kong "Next Media" group founder Jimmy Lai was imprisoned due to the "National Security Law". His son Lai Chong-en recently criticized the British government for "hypocrisy" and failed to firmly defend Hong Kong's human rights. In response, Truss said she expressed serious concern about the situation in Hong Kong in a speech earlier today. Despite the 1984 agreement between the UK and China, the National Security Law is still on the way. She is sure the UK government will do all it can to help, but the sad truth is that Hong Kong's freedoms have been severely curtailed. Therefore, we all hope that freedom will not disappear elsewhere.

Pita criticizes Myanmar Junta

Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported on 16 May 2023 that when a military coup took place in Myanmar in February 2021, Pita severely criticized the Myanmar military government and kept a distance from the official position of the Thai government. The current Thai government has been promoting the resolution of the crisis through secret diplomacy. Pita's election is not good news for Chinese Communists

Scholars pointed out that the Prayuth government's closeness to the CCP has caused Thailand's development to stagnate, and its economic growth lags behind other Southeast Asian countries. After the Move Forward Party and other democrats come to power, they are expected to have more contacts with Western countries. Therefore, Pita's election "would not be good news for China (CCP)".

The background of Pita in details

The 42-years-old Pita, who was born in a wealthy family, is the candidate for the prime minister of Thailand with the highest education qualification. He was sent to New Zealand to study at the age of 11. Peeta said in a Thai Youtube channel in February 2023 that he only had three TV channels to watch when he was studying in New Zealand. Other than watching soap operas, he can only watch congressional debates. So, he developed an interest in politics at that time.

He returned home to study in the Department of Commerce and Accounting (Finance and Banking) of Thammasat University in Thailand, and won the first-class honor degree graduate. Later, Pita won a scholarship from the University of Texas at Austin, and became the first Thai to receive a Harvard international student scholarship.  Later, he obtained a master's degree in public administration (MPA) from Harvard University. During his study abroad, his father passed away, so he returned home to take over the family business and assisted the debt-laden Agrifood company to come back to life before returning to the United States to continue his studies. He later obtained a master's degree in business administration (MBA) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Pita was a businessman before entering the political circle. He inherited his father’s brown rice oil company at the age of 25 and later served as the CEO of Grab, a car-hailing software. In fact, Pita’s family has connections with the political circle. His father used to be a consultant to the Ministry of Agriculture, and his uncle was once an aide to exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Pita married Thai actress Chutima Teepanat in 2012. The two have a 7-year-old daughter, but Peeta and Chutima divorced in 2019.

Obstacles must be overcome before Pita can be elected Thai prime minister

The Progressive Party has announced that it will form an alliance with five parties including Pheu Thai, Prachachat, Thai Sang Thai, Liberal Thai and Fair Party in a coalition government, with 6 party seats plus a total of 309 seats. However, to be prime minister he must obtain the support of a majority of 376 seats in the Senate and House of Representatives. Since the intentions of the 250 senators who are pro-military are unclear, the ruling coalition of the Progressive Party still needs to win the support of 67 seats if it wants to ensure that Pita is elected prime minister.

[Central News Agency] The result of the general election in Thailand was announced. The Kadima Party is the big winner. The 42-year-old party leader Pita Limjaroenrat is expected to become prime minister. With the halo of a Harvard student, he helped the family business back to life, and is deeply loved by young people. His insistence on anti-dictatorship and the establishment of true democracy has made people from all walks of life look forward to bringing changes to Thailand.

In the afternoon of 13 May 2023, the day before the election of the Thai House of Representatives, the temperature in Bangkok reached nearly 40 degrees Celsius. A group of people gathered on the roadside in the old city, sweating profusely under the bright sun yelling and vying to take a photo with Pita.

Pita rushed over from the last trip, and immediately boarded another candidate’s campaign car, and had to complete the street sweeping trip before 6:00 p.m., the election time. Under the glare of the sun, he told the reporters at the scene, "The Move Forward Party's dream is to build a real democracy through the concepts of demilitarization, anti-dictatorship and decentralization so that Thailand can move forward."

At that time, no one expected the election the next day. The Move Forward Party won 151 seats in the House of Representatives and became the largest party in Congress. Through alliances with other political parties, the Progressive Party is expected to form a cabinet. The dream of Peeta and the Progressive Party is like Like the bright sunshine of the day before the polling day, it shines in front of your eyes, waiting for them to realize it.

The Move Forward Party has its roots in Future Forward Party, and Pita's advocations

The predecessor of the Move Forward Party was the Future Forward Party (Future Forward) established in 2018 by Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, a young Thai entrepreneur. In the 2019 election, the Future Forward Party won 80 seats as a rising star and became the third largest in Congress. party.

However, Thanathon outspokenly challenged the authority of the authorities and was chased and killed by the authorities. In 2020, the Constitutional Court found that Thanathon’s loan to the Future Forward Party was illegal and ruled to dissolve the Future Forward Party. 16 party cadres including Thanathon will serve in the next 10 years but there were no new political parties, no membership in other parties, no voting.

The disbandment of the Future Forward Party triggered the anger of the younger generation in Thailand, which in turn promoted the frenzy of student street movements in 2020, paving the way for the victory of the Forward Party.

Pita is one of the 80 members of the Future Forward Party elected in 2019. The members of the Future Forward Party transferred to the Move Forward Party after the party was disbanded. He shouldered the heavy responsibility of the chairman, continued the style of the Future Forward Party, and dared to challenge the policy of the governing authority.

For example, amending Article 112 of the Criminal Law, which is commonly known as the crime of offending the monarch, opposing the monopoly of alcoholic beverage production, amending the constitution to prevent further coups, and supporting gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) marriage equality policies, etc., are all welcomed by the younger generation.

Thailand has a serious crime of offending the monarch. Anyone who defames, insults or threatens the king, queen, crown prince or regent can be sentenced to a maximum of 15 years in prison. Amending Article 112 of the Criminal Code touched sensitive royal issues, but Peeta made a statement on 15 May 2023 that it was clearly stated at the international press conference that the Move Forward Party will definitely promote the revision of Article 112 of the Criminal Law when it forms a cabinet.

Pita: Hope and light to Thailand, the most honoured moment is to serve the people

In the evening of 15 May 2023, it was clear that the Move Forward Party won the election and would form an alliance with other parties. Pita led 32 Kadima Party MPs in Bangkok to thank votes in the old city by sweeping the streets in a motorcade. The motorcade departed from the Democracy Monument , stopped in front of the Bangkok City Hall, and Pita said to thousands of supporters in front of the City Hall Square: "A new day has come, and the new day brings hope and light to Thailand!"

At the international press conference, Pita said he was ready to be prime minister. He also assured the masses that all the promises and plans made by the Kadima Party before the election will be realized. "As long as everyone works together, anything is possible. At this moment the most honored moment of my life is to serve the people."

The Progressive Party has announced that it will compete with Pheu Thai and other small parties including Prachachat, Thai Sang Thai, Liberal Thai and the Fairness Party ( Fair Party) formed an alliance to form a coalition government, with a total of 309 seats for the six parties.

Thailand has a total of 500 members of the House of Representatives and 250 members of the Senate. To be successfully elected as the prime minister, 376 seats, which are more than half of the 750 seats in the House of Representatives, are required. Since the intentions of the 250 pro-military senators are unclear, if the alliance of the Move Forward Party wants to ensure that the alliance survival, there are still 67 seats needed for the elected prime minister to be elected. Therefore, if Pita is to successfully serve as the next prime minister, he needs to win more allies.

The military regime has banned foreigners from traveling by air to certain towns in Myanmar, according to tour operators.

Zhengjie said in the political commentary program "News Vernacular" on 16 May, "Russia wants to deploy an aircraft carrier in the Far East, but it does not have the ability to manufacture it or buy it back." because mainland China has already helped Russia to build it. If Russia really wants to build it, it really needs to cooperate with mainland China to help build it.”

It is understood that the Russian Navy hopes to have a new generation of aircraft carriers. Most of Russia's main warships are manufactured in Europe, such as Severodvinsk Shipyard, St. Petersburg Shipyard, and the Black Sea Shipyard during the Soviet Union. Therefore, Li Zhengjie also mentioned, "Russia's current shipyards in Europe may be boycotted by NATO countries, and it may not be able to build them. The most likely thing is to seek cooperation from CCP China to build aircraft carriers."

Long queues at Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou hospitals, Beijing's covi infection returns to the top
A well-known doctor in Beijing revealed that the number of covi infection cases has increased in many areas, and most of the patients are young people. According to the official report, the covi infection has surpassed flu for two consecutive weeks and returned to the top of the list of "notifiable infectious diseases".
Li Tong, Chief Physician of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Beijing You'an Hospital: "Recently, the number of positive cases of the covid in many places has increased. This is because everyone travels on May Day, attends more parties, and the people they come into contact with are more. In addition, as the weather gets hotter, people’s willingness to wear masks has also declined. Therefore, the number of covi infection cases has increased.”
Dr. Li Tong Zeng revealed that most of the recent covid cases are first-time infections, and the patients are mainly young people.
The Beijing CDC released a weekly influenza report showing that since the 17th week (24 to 30 April 2023), the covi infection has surpassed influenza for two consecutive weeks, and returned to the number one legal infectious disease category.
On 15 May 2023, the staff of fever clinics in several tertiary hospitals in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou said that at present, it takes more than half an hour to see a doctor, and some hospitals need to wait for 3 hours. Hospitals in many places in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou have long queues, causing public concern.
People in Beijing: "Nanmen Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine is the largest hospital of traditional Chinese medicine in China. They prescribe medicine to treat my covid sequelae. Those who prescribe it are those who recover after re-infection. You can't afford it at all. Now these few days There are so many people in the hospital, everyone must be vigilant. You see, I prescribed the medicine the day before yesterday, and I was asked to get it at 4 pm and the huge crowd of people queuing up to get the medicine means that the disease has reappeared. My daughter's homeroom teacher is also covi-positive. My good friend said yesterday that he was dying again. I may be positive again, and then the sore throat started again. My husband went to work yesterday, and the work of posting anti-epidemic materials started again. Look at the disinfectants posted, house disinfecants, hand disinfectants, and this one is for fever reduction, posted.”

Zhong Nanshan: Need to develop new vaccines that cover XBB mutant strains to reduce the covid death rate
On 15 May 2023, Zhong Nanshan, an expert from the CCP, said that according to the data of the fever clinic in Guangzhou, 20% to 25% of the fever patients tested were infected with covid. The mainstream covi strain currently prevalent in Guangzhou is XBB.1.9.1. According to statistics, about 85% of the people in the country have been infected with covid, that are about 1.1 billion to 1.2 billion people. At the same time, Zhong Nanshan declared that the next step to deal with the covi infection, on the one hand, it is necessary to develop vaccines that can cover the XBB mutant strains,  including mRNA vaccines and recombinant protein vaccines. These vaccines are mainly aimed at some special groups, such as those with low immunity or other serious conditions. On the other hand, once infected with covid, timely drug treatment should be given to reduce the death rate. The real situation is unknown.

Zhong Nanshan: Covid virus has infected 1.2 billon people in China
Zhong Nanshan introduced that whether there are symptoms or no symptoms, if the antibody corresponding to the new coronavirus in the body increases, it means that the human body has been infected. From this perspective, according to the measurement, about 85% of the people in the country have been infected with the covid virus, about 1.1 billion to 1.2 billion people. According to relevant laboratory studies and real-world studies in Singapore and other places, the antibodies produced after infection with covid can protect the human body within 4-6 months; but if faced with the mutant strain XBB, its protection may be weakened. He said, "From December last year, it actually looks like this time has come."

It has been approved for marketing in March with conditions for the treatment of adult patients with mild to moderate symptoms of covid. Doubts and concerns with CCP's first domestic covid mRNA vaccine injection
On 13 May 2023, the first domestic covid mRNA vaccine was injected for the first time in Shijiazhuang.
However, some experts expressed doubts and concerns.
Lin Xiaoxu, former director of the Laboratory of Virology at the U.S. Army Research Institute: "Since 2021, I have been eager to promote this mRNA vaccine, and the Chinese government has also independently developed this mRNA vaccine. After these preliminary products are available in 2022, it will give it a clinical trial license as soon as possible. Then, if you take a closer look at the Press Release issued by the CSPC, you can see that it is actually not a single CSPC vaccine, it is actually a booster. Then there is a problem here, because most people in mainland China are actually inoculated with inactivated vaccines, so if this population is injected with your current mRNA as an enhancer on this basis, then how  much will the protection be? We don’t know because the data itself has not been published. So it is equivalent to saying that the drug company said this thing itself, but did not announce how it did it.”
