On 22 June 2025, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te attended the "Rotary International Club" event in New Taipei City and delivered the first speech in the "Ten Lectures on Uniting the Country" series, reiterating that Taiwan has the four elements of a country, refuting China's claims, and emphasizing that "the People's Republic of China has never owned Taiwan." Beijing has always warned that pursuing "Taiwan independence" means war.

This Sunday (June 22), Taiwan President Lai Ching-te delivered a speech with "country" as the main theme at the "Rotary International 3490 District 9 Joint Regular Meeting" held in New Taipei City, saying that "the People's Republic of China has never owned Taiwan."

Today's event is the first of the "Ten Lectures on Uniting the Country" speech event initiated by Lai Ching-te.

In his speech today, he said that every man is responsible for the rise and fall of a country, and no egg is left intact when the nest is overturned. A country can only be called a country if it has four elements: people, land, government, and sovereignty. No matter from which angle or from the four elements of a country, "we are all countries." China claims that Taiwan is not a sovereign state. China claims to own Taiwan in UN Resolution 2758, but Resolution 2758 only deals with the issue of "United Nations seat representation" and does not involve Taiwan. Countries around the world have also passed resolutions stating that Resolution 2758 has no connection with Taiwan's sovereignty.

He emphasized that the People's Republic of China has never owned Taiwan. In 1951, after Japan surrendered, the Japanese side stated in Article 2, Paragraph 2 of the San Francisco Peace Treaty that "the Japanese government renounces all rights, rights, names and claims to Taiwan, Penghu and other islands." The San Francisco Peace Treaty did not hand Taiwan over to the People's Republic of China. At that time, the Communist Party of China had been established for less than two years, and "the People's Republic of China has never ruled Taiwan for any day."

Regarding China's claim that Taiwan has been an inseparable part of China "since ancient times," Lai Ching-te said that Taiwan has had an independent ecosystem since ancient times, including mammoth fossils and golden monkey fossils in the Zuozhen Fossil Park in Tainan, and the Dabenkeng culture of the Xinshi Nanke Archaeological Museum of the Taiwan Prehistory Museum. Taiwan is also the origin of Austronesian culture. After the Treaty of Shimonoseki, the Chinese regime no longer has anything to do with Taiwan's sovereignty.

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te stressed that the People's Republic of China has never owned Taiwan.

AFP pointed out that Lai Ching-te had made similar remarks in the past, insisting that Taiwan and mainland China "are not subordinate to each other."

Beijing is disgusted with Lai Ching-te, who firmly defends Taiwan's sovereignty, and criticized his "separatist stance" as "doomed to failure" and warned that "pursuing Taiwan independence" means "war."
