It is the main aircraft of China Airlines for high-capacity and long-haul routes.

In 1993, China Airlines opened a direct route from Taoyuan to New York (JFK Airport) with a 747-400 passenger plane, setting the world's longest cruise record at the time; The 400 passenger plane was the first to debut, and it is the only aircraft that has been identified across three generations of companies. In 2003, a B747 operated the first Chinese New Year charter flight over Hong Kong to mainland China without landing.
