Haneda and Narita airports will use facial recognition systems to reduce exposure

Report by : Gan Yung Chyan, KUCINTA SETIA

Haneda and Narita airports are scheduled to use face recognition systems in July 2021 to shorten the time for passengers to check in and reduce direct contact between people.

According to a report from the Japan Broadcasting Association on the 25th, at that time, Narita Airport will open face recognition services for passengers boarding Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways international flights. Haneda will also open this service for passengers on international flights of some airlines.

Passengers using this service need to register at the designated check-in terminal with their facial photos, passport photos and boarding pass information. After successfully uploading the above information to the face recognition system, they will not need to show them to board the plane before boarding. They only need to look at the camera in front of them during check-in luggage and security checks.

Information and data such as passenger photos will be deleted within 24 hours.

Both airports expressed the hope that this measure will help reduce direct contact between people and help contain the new crown epidemic. Narita airport also stated that this move will be an important step in restarting international travel.
