NATO is holding on 16 May 2022 a huge military drill in the Baltics just a day after Finland and Sweden confirmed their intention to join the alliance, raising tensions with Russia.
Some 15,000 troops from 10 different countries - including Finland, Sweden and a small detachment from Ukraine - will participate in the exercise dubbed 'Siil' or 'Hedgehog' which will take place just 40 miles from the nearest Russian base.
The drill will simulate an attack from Russia on Estonia and will be one of the largest exercises based out of the country since 1991 - largely bolstered by an additional 900 British troops deployed to Tallinn in February before the war in Ukraine broke out.

Drill has been long-planned, but comes amid soaring tensions in the region
NATO stressed that Hedgehog has been long-planned but it none-the-less underscores tensions in the Baltics which have ramped up dramatically after Putin ordered his army across Ukraine's borders on 24 February.
Russian state media on 15 May 2022 threatened to deploy additional nuclear weapons to the region after Finland and Sweden formally applied to join the alliance, blaming the Kremlin's decision to attack Ukraine as the reason for doing so.
The move breaks with decades-long neutrality agreements that barred them from joining any military alliance, in return for guarantees from Moscow that they would not be attacked.
However, the Ukraine invasion has prompted a high-level re-think of that strategy and seen a huge shift in public opinion with majorities in both countries now favouring membership as the best way to guarantee their safety.
NATO chief Jens Stoltenburg say the pair will be welcomed into the alliance 'with open arms', though the official ratification process involving all 30 current member states could take months.
In the meantime, the pair have struck defence agreements with the US and UK to protect them in the event Russia decides to attack.
Sweden and Finland were taking part in NATO drills before applying to join the alliance, and it is thought their involvement in Hedgehog was pre-planned.
The drill will take place over nine countries and is designed to test how a multi-nation force would respond to a sudden attack by Russia.
A "small number" of troops will also be present from Georgia, which was invaded by Russia in 2008 and still has Kremlin forces on some of its territory.
Major General Veiko-Vello Palm, the deputy commander of the Estonian Defence Forces, told journalists last week that Russia has not been invited to observe this exercise, as has happened in the past.
"We have notified the international community of the exercise," Palm said, according to Newsweek, "but we would not have allowed Russian observers."

Finland and Sweden yesterday announced formal plans to apply for NATO membership, prompting threats from Moscow to "respond"

One of the original supposed rationales for Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February was to stop NATO enlargement but that plan is now in tatters as both Scandinavian nations say they will seek membership of the alliance.
The turnaround by prime minister Magdalena Andersson's party, which has opposed NATO membership since the start of the alliance, secures a firm majority in Sweden's parliament in favour of joining.
"Europe, Sweden and the Swedish public are living a new and dangerous reality,'" said Ms Andersson, announcing the decades-long policy U-turn. "The best thing for the security of Sweden and the Swedish people is to join NATO."
Sweden, which was neutral during the Second World War, stayed out of military alliances for more than 200 years though it forged closer ties with the Brussels-based organisation from the 1990s.
Finland's President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin made their announcement at a joint news conference in Helsinki.
The Finnish Parliament is expected to endorse the decision in coming days, but it is considered a formality following a swell in public support for doing so.
A formal membership application will then be submitted to NATO headquarters in Brussels, most likely at the some point next week.
Speaking during a NATO conference in Berlin at the weekend, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken voiced confidence that NATO members would support the bid, after Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed last-minute objections.
"I heard almost across the board, very strong support for Finland and Sweden joining the alliance, if that's what they choose to do, and I'm very confident that we will reach consensus," he said from the German capital.

Malaysian Foreign Minister meets counterpart from NUG in Washington

In another blow to Myanmar’s military regime, the Malaysian foreign minister met with his counterpart from Myanmar’s anti-regime National Unity Government (NUG), which the junta has designated a terrorist organization.
Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah became the first minister from an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member country to personally and publicly meet a NUG minister.
Saifuddin early this month attracted the regime’s ire by commenting that a move by ASEAN to informally engage the NUG “may be conceivable, especially on how humanitarian aid to the people of Myanmar who are still in their country can be delivered.”

ASEAN adopted a five-point peace plan for Myanmar in April 2021 urging the junta to immediately end the violence in the country and to hold an inclusive political dialogue, among other steps. The regime, which has killed more than 1,800 civilians so far, has failed to implement the plan. As a result, relations between the regional grouping and the junta have turned sour, with the regime’s leadership barred from attending summits since last year.
More than one week after the regime’s furious response to Malaysia, Saifuddin met the NUG minister, Daw Zin Mar Aung, informally on Saturday in Washington, where ASEAN leaders were gathered for a special summit between the US and the bloc. While junta leader Min Aung Hlaing was excluded from the summit, US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman and the US President’s Special Assistant and Senior Director for Democracy and Human Rights Rob Berschinski met with the NUG minister on Myanmar issue.
The NUG foreign minister tweeted that she had a “productive meeting” with Saifuddin and discussed “the dire situation in Myanmar, and how the NUG and Malaysia can work together to restore peace and democracy in Myanmar, including humanitarian assistance and support for the Myanmar refugees.”
Saifuddin tweeted that he had an informal meeting with Daw Zin Mar Aung “to express Malaysia’s support and solidarity with the people of Myanmar and stand ready to work towards restoring peace and democracy in Myanmar.”

Antonov Airlines moves base to Leipzig, Germany

The airport also has two 3,600-m Category IIIB runways, which are large enough to handle the heaviest Antonov aircraft.

〔即时新闻／综合报导〕美国南加州橘郡教堂枪击1死5伤惨案，受害者皆为台裔人士，枪手周文伟（David Wenwei Chou）疑出于政治目的犯案，美国独立媒体人Inty在推特上表示，周文伟属于中国和平统一促进会的一员，他接着更披露一份法律文件，指周文伟在美国拥有「私人侦探执照」。
Inty在推特发文表示，周文伟是美国中国和平统一促进会（下称和统会）的成员，也就是中共的人，Inty接着贴出多张周文伟出席和统会活动的照片，聚会中的标语还写有「顺势速追击、迅猛灭独妖」、「佑侬韩国瑜、飙选定夺标」等挺韩言论。
Inty在另一则推特贴文中披露了一份官方文件，其中周文伟拥有美国拉斯维加斯核发的私人侦探执照，文件显示他通过相关考核，且执照目前仍处于有效状态，直到2026年才会过期。
「中国和平统一促进会」（简称统促会、和统会）是中国半官方背景的促统组织，在海外许多国家设有分会。其宗旨为「联合海内外各界人士，发展台湾海峡两岸的民间往来，促进中国的和平统一」。并由中共中央政治局常委、全国政协主席汪洋担任会长。
中国以外地区的和统会一般由当地不同的华侨团体共同组建，美国国务院于2020年认定，和统会受中共中央统战部控制。

The "China Peaceful Reunification Promotion Association" (referred to as the Unification Promotion Association and the Peace Reunification Association) is a semi-official Chinese unification promotion organization with branches in many overseas countries. Its purpose is "to unite people from all walks of life at home and abroad, to develop non-governmental exchanges across the Taiwan Strait, and to promote the peaceful reunification of China." It is chaired by Wang Yang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
The Peace Reunion Association outside China is generally formed by different local overseas Chinese groups. The U.S. State Department recognized in 2020 that the Peace Reunion Association is under the control of the United Front Work Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.
