Myanmar's civilian government NUG talks with Arakan Army

In an attempt to engage with armed groups which can help topple Myanmar’s military regime, the civilian National Unity Government (NUG) said it held an online meeting with Rakhine State’s Arakan Army (AA).

The shadow government’s Alliance Relations Committee, its foreign minister Daw Zin Mar Aung and prominent ’88 Generation leader U Min Ko Naing spoke to AA chief Major General Tun Myat Naing and his deputy Brigadier General Nyo Tun Aung for two hours on Monday (16 May 2022).

The NUG said it was a cordial discussion about the situation and the civilian government’s activities. 

Formed in Apri 2021 following the coup, the NUG is made up of ousted National League for Democracy lawmakers and allies from ethnic minorities to challenge junta legitimacy at home and abroad.

The NUG has been trying to build trust with ethnic armed organizations (EAOs) to fight the regime, promising a federal democratic union after the regime is ousted.

Major EAOs like the Karen National Liberation Army and Kachin Independence Army have formal alliances and fight with the NUG’s armed wing, the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs). The AA has supported the PDFs with training and weapons.

Established in 2009, the AA has been fighting the military in Rakhine State since 2015 for self-determination for the Rakhine or Arakan community. 

It has the support of the Rakhine population and was inflicting huge casualties on the military in Rakhine State and Paletwa Township in neighboring Chin State until an informal ceasefire was agreed in late 2020.

The AA has since set up its own administration and judiciary across much of the state.

Despite the ceasefire, tensions between the regime and AA remain high.

Recently, Tun Myat Naing tweeted the junta’s western commander, reminding him where Rakhine State is located and warning him not to irritate the AA. 

On Sunday, fighting broke out between the AA and regime in Paletwa after AA troops fired at a helicopter bringing food to junta troops.

Junta troops clash with Arakan Army in western Myanmar

Myanmar military troops and the Arakan Army (AA) clashed on Sunday around noon near the village of Than Htaung in Chin State’s Paletwa Township. 

The clash happened after AA fighters fired at a helicopter bringing in food supplies for junta troops deployed on a hill near Than Htaung, according to a Than Htaung villager. 

“Soldiers have been deployed there for a long time. The fighting started around noon and it lasted for around 20 minutes. They also fired heavy guns. Some villagers fled and some hid in their houses. The gunfire stopped only after the helicopter left,” he told The Irrawaddy.  

Some houses in Than Htaung were damaged by gunfire, while some unexploded mortar bombs hit the ground, according to villagers.   

Than Htaung, which is located upstream of the Lay Myo River, is adjacent to Mrauk-U in Rakhine State. AA troops are active in the area, and military regime troops are deployed at the village police station and on a hill near the village.  

Military tensions have been running high in Rakhine State for months, said the AA in a statement on Monday. The statement accused the regime of increasing its military presence in Rakhine and disrupting the administrative and judicial mechanisms of the AA by accusing its staff.

In their statement, the AA urged locals to avoid travelling near military outposts and bases, saying that clashes could break out at any time due to increasing tensions.

Deepest despair among many young Chinese

"The speaker announced a biologically significant Decision: We will not reproduce. Behind this decision is a judgment in the sense of psychology and ontology: we are deprived of a future worth looking forward to. It can be said that this sentence is a young man's opinion of his era, the strongest possible indictment."

Zhang Xuezhong also said that the young man "speaks in a calm and natural tone, but it is precisely because he speaks calmly and naturally that people are thrilled to hear it."

Anger over harsh lockdown
