Taiwan's Medigen vaccine MVC-COV1901 enters WHO data analysis trial stage

Medigen Vaccine Biologics Corp. (MVC), manufacturer of the Medigen covi vaccine (MVC-COV1901), announced on Thursday (13 May 2022) that Phase 3 clinical trials have entered the data analysis stage.
MVC announced nearly all participants in clinical trials for MVC-COV1901 / Medigen, a candidate included in the WHO's Solidarity Trial Vaccines (STV), have completed their two-dose regimen of either placebo or vaccine. The individually randomized, controlled Phase 3 clinical trials include 18,000 subjects in Colombia, Mali, and the Philippines.
The next stage is for independent statisticians to analyze the data and present their findings to a panel of experts in the STV steering committee. Once the analysis of interim data has been completed, the results will be released to the scientific community and the public for review.

At least 12 children have died from child hepatitis and more than 450 fallen ill with liver disease of "unknown origin" worldwide

Twelve children have died from the mystery hepatitis being detected in an increasing number of countries.
An update by EU health chiefs on Wednesday said there had been 11 casualties worldwide but a 12th suspected death was announced in Ireland on 12 May 2022.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said there had also been 450 cases of the deadly liver disease globally.
That number is bound to be higher because the UK announced 13 more cases on 12 May and experts believe the recent spate is just the tip of the iceberg.
Five deaths have been confirmed in Indonesia and five have been recorded in the US, with one in Palestine.
Twenty-one countries have now detected "severe hepatitis of unknown origin" among children mostly under the age of 10 since early April. At least 26 youngsters have required liver transplants.
Scientists are puzzled as to what is causing the unusual illness but the main theory is that it is triggered by a group of viruses that normally cause the common cold.
Most of the worldwide cases have been picked up in the UK (176) and the US (110) so far but a lack of surveillance in some countries could be masking the true scale of the outbreak.
The common viruses that cause hepatitis: hepatitis viruses A, B, C, and E; have not been detected in any of the cases reported worldwide.
Three quarters of the UK's cases have tested positive for adenoviruses, which has made the virus the chief culprit.
Scientists are probing whether a mutated strain of adenovirus has evolved to become more severe, or if a lack of social mixing during the pandemic weakened children's immunity.
They also have not been able to rule out an old Covid infection being involved.
In a bizarre twist last week, health chiefs in the UK are also investigating whether 'dog exposures' are to blame.
The UKHSA said last week that a "high" number of the British children with hepatitis were from families which own dogs.
Officials did not explain how dogs could potentially be to blame but they are known carriers of adenovirus strains.
However, covid vaccines have been ruled out as a possible cause because the majority of the ill British children haven't been vaccinated due to their young age.
The UKHSA said the majority but not all child cases tested positive for adenovirus, but it admits this could be due to the way testing is done.
Some of the negative cases had only looked for adenovirus in respiratory and faecal samples, even though it is mainly detected in the blood.
In new guidance this week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the US has told doctors treating children with hepatitis to take liver samples for analysis.
Parents are advised to go to their GP if their child develops symptoms of hepatitis, which include pale, grey-coloured stools, very dark urine, or a yellowing of the eyes and skin.

Joe Biden’s “Great MAGA King” remark came as he spoke to an International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) conference in Chicago this week. Like many labour unions, those at the top of the IBEW have continued supporting Biden and other Democrats, while the skilled tradesmen and others within the union’s ranks have widely rejected the left. Blue collar workers, like the members of the IBEW, helped form the core bloc of America First populist voters that sent President Trump to the White House.
While speaking to the IBEW, Biden lamented Florida GOP Senator Rick Scott’s 11-point tax plan that Scott says will help counteract the Biden Administration’s record-setting inflation numbers and budgetary shortfalls. In addition to slashing government spending, the plan will, for the first time in history, force all Americans to have “skin in the game” by paying taxes. Scott, and those in favour of his plan, reportedly hope to bring some relief to the massive tax burden felt by working- and middle-class Americans, who have been increasingly tasked with funding government entitlement programs for people who pay nothing into the system.
Biden has gone on the attack regarding Scott’s plan, but has yet to accept an offer from Senator Scott to debate him on the matter, leading Scott to question his mental and physical capacity.
At the IBEW’s Chicago conference, Biden parroted left-wing economic talking points blaming the Trump Administration for his own economic crisis and even crediting himself with lowering the nation deficit. In reality, the deficit fell when multi-billion-dollar COVID relief packages, which were demanded by Congressional Democrats in 2020, expired and Biden expanded government spending by record levels under non-COVID standards.
“Look at my predecessor, the great MAGA king,” Biden said of President Trump at the Chicago conference. “The deficit increased every single year he was president,” Biden went on, failing to illicit a reaction from his audience.
After Biden dubbed Trump the
“Great MAGA King,” supporters of the 45th President took to social media to
celebrate the new nickname, once again co-opting a failed left-wing hit for
political gain. President Trump himself even thanked Biden for subbing him the
“Great MAGA King” in a post to his Truth Social network.
“The Great MAGA King is the name Joe Biden is now using to describe me,” President Trump wrote in his post, known as a “Truth” on the platform. “Thank you, Joe. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”.
