Expert: China's economy will never surpass the US

Although China's economy has continued to decline this year, the Wall Street Journal reported in April, citing sources, that Chinese leader Xi Jinping told officials "to ensure that China's economic growth rate exceeds that of the United States this year."

On 28 September 2022, an article published by the official WeChat account of People's Daily "Take off the mask! "Being Upright and Upright Chinese" has been popular among netizens. Just a cursory look at the title and the cartoons in the text will mistake it for this article calling on Chinese people to take off their masks and resolutely resist the current epidemic prevention policy. Some netizens even expressed their opinions on "Source: People's Daily. I was surprised for a while."

In fact, the People's Daily article "Take off the mask! "Being Upright Chinese" was published on 18 August  2019, when there was no covid pandemic. The "mask" referred to in the title of the article and in the comics was not a mask worn for the purpose of protecting against the covid virus. The "Removing the mask"  target of propaganda was  aimed at the protesters of the anti-extradition movement in Hong Kong. At that time, many Hong Kong people wore masks to protect themselves (covering their faces to prevent police facial recognition) or to defend against tear gas. On 4 October 2019, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam announced the formulation of the "Prohibition of Face Covering Regulations" (the "Prohibition of Face Covering Law") to prohibit citizens from using objects to cover their faces during assemblies and parades. The masked law suggests that the protests during the anti-extradition campaign have turned into a "colour revolution".

Therefore, the "be upright Chinese" in the original cartoon of the People's Daily has the meaning of accusing Hong Kong opponents of "separating the country," "betraying the motherland," and "terrorist activities" that confused with each other, forced bundling. During the same period, a large number of mainland media and Wolf Warrior netizens denounced Hong Kong protesters as "waste youth" and "cockroaches", stigmatizing Hong Kong's protesters fighting for their own rights.
