A common source of legitimacy for many authoritarian regimes is ideology. In the Mao era, that ideology was communism but after 40 years of market reforms, few in China still believe in the idea.
To fill the ideological void, CCP leaders have turned to nationalist sentiments, such as Xi Jinping's "Chinese Dream," which vows to achieve national rejuvenation from a century of occupation or invasion by foreign powers.
