The Korean website of Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported on 28 August 2024 that North Korea recently listed Chinese movies and TV series as "impure" video products and suspended internal speeches involving Chinese historical views.

According to reports, North Korea has long listed South Korean songs, movies and TV series as controlled objects, but this is the first time that Chinese video products have been included in the banned list.

A resident source in South Hamgyong Province said that the list of impure video products released from the end of May to the beginning of June included Korean songs and movies, as well as dozens of TV series and movies from India, Russia and China.

Chinese dramas included in the banned viewing list include "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai" and "Wulin Wai Zhuan", all of which are movies or TV series shot in China or Hong Kong. The above works are very popular in North Korea. This is the first time that Chinese video products have appeared in North Korea's banned list.

According to sources, not long ago, the North Korean Central Committee issued an instruction document requiring party organizations and judicial organs at all levels to prohibit residents from listening to or disseminating speech recordings involving Chinese historical views. This is an instruction personally approved by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Sources said that the cause is reportedly that North Korea believes that China distorts North Korean history, claims that the history of Koryo is a local regime of ethnic minorities in China, and promotes that North Korean clothing and kimchi originated from China, especially trying to downplay the anti-Japanese history of former North Korean leader Kim Il-sung. At present, North Korea and China have bad relations.
