U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking at the G7 foreign ministers' meeting in Niagara, Canada on Wednesday, strongly refuted criticism from European allies regarding U.S. airstrikes in the Caribbean, stating that the EU has "no right to decide" how Washington defends its security.
Reuters reported that the U.S. military has recently conducted at least 19 strikes against suspected drug-trafficking vessels in the Caribbean and along the Pacific coast of Latin America, resulting in 76 deaths. The Trump administration claims these vessels were carrying drugs, but has not yet released specific evidence or legal basis, causing unease in many countries.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot criticized the U.S. actions this week, calling them "violations of international law" and a threat to French territorial security in the region. EU foreign policy chief Kármán... Kaja Kallas also stated that such attacks are difficult to legitimize unless based on self-defense or authorized by the UN Security Council.
Rubio, before leaving Canada, responded forcefully: "I don't believe the EU has the right to define international law, much less dictate how the US maintains national security." He emphasized that the drug problem not only threatens the US but also flows into Europe, adding, "They should thank the US for taking action against drug terrorists."
Regarding a CNN report that the UK had suspended intelligence sharing due to concerns about airstrikes, Rubio dismissed it as "fake news," stating that US-UK cooperation was "incredibly solid" and that no action had been hindered.
Although Washington maintains that the actions comply with Article 51 of the UN Charter regarding the right of self-defense, UN experts pointed out last month that even if the US accusations are true, the use of lethal force in international waters constitutes "extrajudicial killing" and violates international maritime law. Colombian President Gustavo Petro therefore ordered a suspension of intelligence cooperation with the US until the US ceases its attacks in the Caribbean.
Besides the Caribbean disputes, the G7 foreign ministers' meeting also focused on the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called on allies to strengthen long-range missile and energy support to prepare for winter fighting.
The joint statement issued at the end of the meeting reiterated the positions of "immediate ceasefire" and "increased economic sanctions against Russia," but did not directly mention US military action.
Rubio also revealed that Washington has determined Russia is "not interested in peace," accusing Moscow of still attempting to seize territory in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine expressed gratitude for the new round of U.S. energy sanctions and called for continued efforts to "increase the war costs for the Putin regime."
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced a new round of sanctions against Russia during the meeting, targeting its drone program, liquefied natural gas companies, and "shadow fleet" vessels.

Despite Washington's assertion that the action complies with Article 51 of the UN Charter regarding the right of self-defense, UN experts pointed out last month that even if the US accusations are true, the use of lethal force in international waters constitutes "extrajudicial killing" and violates international maritime law.
