Thailand proposes free domestic air tickets

Report by : Gan Yung Chyan, KUCINTA SETIA

For the first time, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports Phiphat said that after Thai Airways staff received the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination this week, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand is considering providing foreign tourists with free or discounted domestic air tickets to attract more foreign tourists to visit Thailand, increasing tourism income. At present, the Thai Brigade and Sports Department has discussed with Bangkok Airways and the airline's Samui Airport.

Phiphat said that Phuket will open a quarantine-free policy to foreign tourists who have been vaccinated against the virus and from low-risk countries on 1 July 2021 this year to revive the local tourism industry. This plan is expected to attract 100,000 foreign tourists.

July is the rainy season in Thailand, and this time in previous years was also the low season for tourism in Thailand. The introduction of free Thai domestic air tickets is a stimulus measure to attract foreign tourists to Thailand, extend their stay in Thailand, and increase the income of Thailand's tourism industry.

With the relief of Thailand's covid epidemic, the Thai government hopes to attract 6.4 million foreign tourists in the last quarter of this year.
