Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe gave a street speech in Nara on 8 July 2022 to support the election but a 41-year-old man Tetsuya Yamagami fired twice in a row. He was shot on the spot and fell unconscious. He was rushed to the hospital due to cardiopulmonary arrest. Rescue was unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead. In this regard, Abe's autopsy results were released on 9 July 2022, and it was determined that he died of excessive arterial blood loss. The Nara police pointed out that the death was caused by excessive bleeding in Abe's left hand artery.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot dead at the age of 67. The suspect, Tetsuya Yamagami, confessed during police interrogation that he committed the crime not because he was dissatisfied with Abe's political views but because he had resentment against a religious group, and he just found out that Abe was related to this group before deciding to ambush and sho0t at Abe. According to foreign media reports such as the Mainichi Shimbun, 41-year-old Tetsuya Yamagami also revealed the motive for the crime, saying that because of his resentment towards a religious group, he discovered Abe had a relationship with the group, and was dissatisfied with him, "I know that former Prime Minister Abe will come. Nara, so I decided to commit a crime." During the interrogation process, Tetsuya Yamagami kept saying some incomprehensible words, and even mentioned the name of a senior religious group and declared that he "wanted to kill him."

It is reported that the local police are currently investigating to confirm whether he has criminal responsibility. In addition, the police revealed that Tetsuya Yamagami also confessed that the guns involved in the crime first obtained parts through online shopping, and then assembled them by himself. Later, when searching the residence, it was found that there were suspected explosives and multiple modified guns in the room, and it was suspected that he was preparing to launch an attack on Abe as early as this spring.
