New swine flu virus found in China can be transmitted between humans and animals

In the new study, the researchers collected nasal swab samples from pigs over different time periods to compare the isolated influenza A viruses.
From April 2021 to February 2022, a total of 829 swine nasal swab samples were collected and eight influenza A viruses were isolated including seven from August 2021 and one from September 2021.
The researchers found that the influenza A virus detected in August 2021 was an H3N2 virus, and its internal gene segments were all from the H1N1 A virus lineage.
The influenza A virus isolated in September 2021 is a reassortment between multiple swine flu lineages. A part of the gene segments of the virus belonged to the avian H9N2 virus subtype, including gene segments derived from the pH1N1 lineage and the Eurasian avian H1N1 lineage, and its non-structural gene segments belonged to the triple reassortment lineage.
Based on previous studies, genotype 4 Eurasian avian-like swine influenza A virus can bind to human sialic acid receptors, enabling the virus to replicate efficiently in human airway epithelial cells.
Sequence analysis indicated that some previously reported genotype 4 viruses and the Eurasian avian H1N1 virus isolated in this study may share a common ancestor, suggesting that further risk assessment of this genotype and its recombination epidemic potential is required.
It is reported that the avian influenza A virus associated with human infection contains internal genes derived from avian H9N2 viruses, indicating that the internal genes of H9N2 viruses may contribute to the transmission of zoonotic diseases, suggesting that the virus strain has the possibility of zoonotic transmission nature.
