The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on 12 December 2020 that Israel has established diplomatic relations with the small kingdom of the Himalayas, Bhutan. The Israeli and Bhutanese ambassadors to India held the signing ceremony of the establishment of diplomatic relations on behalf of the two countries. Bhutan only maintains formal diplomatic relations with 53 countries.

Reuters reported that the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement stating that Israel and Bhutan had been in secret contact for many years, with the goal of establishing relations and finally reaching an agreement to establish diplomatic relations.

Israel and Bhutan agreed to develop a joint work plan in water management, agriculture, healthcare and other areas.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed this agreement to establish diplomatic relations and stated that “we are in contact with other countries that wish to join and establish relations with us”.

Israel’s new relationship with this relatively isolated kingdom of the Himalayas seems irrelevant to Israel’s ongoing new relationship with Arab and Muslim countries in the Middle East and Africa.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi said, “Israel’s diplomatic recognition circle is growing and expanding. Our relationship with the Kingdom of Bhutan will be another milestone in deepening Israel’s relations in Asia. "

With the mediation of the United States, Israel and Morocco agreed two days ago to normalize relations between the two countries, making Morocco the fourth Arab country to set aside hostilities and normalize relations with Israel in the past four months. The other three are the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan.

Bhutan currently has diplomatic relations with 53 countries. Among them, it is the country with the closest relationship with India. All Bhutan's external affairs are directed by the Indian government, and India also has troops stationed in Bhutan. For example, in the border barracks set up by the Bhutanese government on the border with China, apart from the Bhutanese soldiers, there are also Indian soldiers stationed in coordination.

Bhutan needs to take India’s attitude into consideration while developing diplomatic relations with other countries.
