Japan plans to introduce an online health card system in all airports

Report by : Gan Yung Chyan, KUCINTA SETIA

According a news report of Kyodo News, the relevant person interviewed on 9 December 2020 learned that the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare is discussing plans to introduce in all domestic airports that have international airlines the use of smartphones or computers to implement the health status on-line filled in questionnaire system in advance. Narita, Tokyo's Haneda, and Kansai Airport have already started empirical tests, and will expand their targets.

The old method written by hand on an airplane or after arriving in Japan from overseas takes time to deal with. The government has relaxed entry and exit restrictions for business purposes, and strived to make procedures more convenient through electronic applications.

In addition to the three airports being tested, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare plans to use it at the Nagoya Chubu, Fukuoka, and New Chitose airports as soon as this year, and strive to eventually expand to all airports with international routes.

Passengers can visit the designated province website at the place of departure or on the plane, and enter their health status and stay experience. The mechanism is to show the issued QR code to the quarantine officer at the airport of arrival, and if there is no problem, they can go through the entry procedures and security check. After arriving at the airport, passengers without an internet terminal can use the computer set up at the airport to input.

The airport where the test is conducted can currently handle the four languages of Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean. They will work hard to add 6 languages including Spanish, Portuguese, and Vietnamese in the future.
