The People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, published an article interviewing six grassroots cadres, discussing how to implement the "tight living" policy to "strengthen consensus and ensure implementation." Some cadres stated that "tight living" does not mean withholding legal wages, but rather resolutely cutting illegal allowances, excessive benefits, and "hidden corruption" expenditures.

The six grassroots cadres are: Zhang Xia, member of the Standing Committee of the Licheng District Party Committee and Head of the Organization Department of Jinan, Shandong Province; Li Huxiao, Director of the Party and Government Office of the Xiabu Sub-district Office, Xinjiang New District, Yingtan, Jiangxi Province; Chen Liji, Director of the Supervision Office of the Party Conduct and Political Conduct of the Dongfang Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection and Supervision, Hainan Province; Sheng Huijuan, Secretary of the Party Working Committee of Huaxi Sub-district, Banan District, Chongqing; Ren Qianwei, member of the Standing Committee of the Xihe District Party Committee and Head of the Organization Department of Fuxin, Liaoning Province; and Ling Bo, Director of the Supervision Office of the Party Conduct and Political Conduct of the Cuiping District Commission for Discipline Inspection and Supervision, Yibin, Sichuan Province.

Some have pointed out that the "tight living" policy emphasizes reducing waste and ineffective spending in daily life, rather than reducing officials' reasonable income and benefits. At the same time, the effectiveness of implementing the "tight living" policy should be incorporated into daily supervision, with commendations and incentives given to units and individuals that demonstrate meticulous budgeting and outstanding efficiency; those who act arbitrarily and engage in serious waste should be held accountable.

In May 2025, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council issued the revised "Regulations on Practicing Economy and Opposing Waste in Party and Government Organs," requiring strict adherence to standards for domestic official receptions and other matters, and has been dubbed the new "alcohol ban." Since then, some local governments have tightened restrictions on civil servants' dining needs, including prohibiting gatherings of more than three civil servants and requiring them to avoid mutual treats. This has sparked public criticism of this overreaction and concerns that it will further strain the dining indust
