U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said Tuesday (October 7) that U.S. forces carried out strikes in Syria last week, killing an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist, whom the statement described as a senior attack planner for the group.

CENTCOM said the U.S. military carried out an airstrike last Thursday (October 2) that killed Muhammad Abd-al-Wahhab al-Ahmad. The command said Ahmad was a member of Ansar al-Islam, a terrorist group affiliated with al-Qaeda.

“U.S. forces in the Middle East are positioned to disrupt and disrupt terrorists’ attempts to plan, organize, and conduct attacks,” said General Brad Cooper, commander of CENTCOM.

“We will continue to defend our homeland, our warfighters, and our partners and allies throughout the region and beyond,” Cooper said. Earlier this year, Central Command said U.S. forces killed Muhammed Yusuf Ziya Talay, a senior leader of Hurras al-Din (Hurras al-Din), an al-Qaeda affiliate, in northwestern Syria in February.

Beginning in April, the U.S. military gradually withdrew hundreds of troops from Syria, aiming to reduce its presence to below 1,000.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said at the time: "Recognizing the United States' successes in the fight against ISIS, including the territorial gains achieved under President Trump's leadership in 2019, the Secretary of Defense today directed the integration of U.S. forces in Syria under Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve, deploying them to specific locations in Syria."

However, it is unclear where Ahmed was killed or whether any terrorists were also killed.
