Mongolia's new Chinggis Khaan International Airport will be put into use on 4 July, opening has been postponed several times due to the epidemic

On 10 June 2021, local time, Montsame reported that the Prime Minister of the Mongolian Government Oyun Erdene, the Chief Executive of the Capital and the Mayor of Ulaanbaatar Sumiya Bazar inspected the construction of the new Chinggis Khan International Airport on the same day the progress of the project. The Mongolian government plans to put the airport into use on 4 July 2021.

Due to the epidemic, the opening time of the new Chinggis Khaan International Airport has been delayed several times. At present, 85.1% of the construction project has been completed. Therefore, since June 15th, the passenger planes of the "Buyant Ukhaa" International Airport have been relocated to the new Chinggis Khaan International Airport.

It is reported that the construction of the new Chinggis Khaan International Airport started in 2013 and the main building was completed in 2018. The airport has a total area of ​​53,726 square meters, with a total of 6 gates (5 international and 1 domestic) and 21 parking spaces. The airport runway is 3,600 meters long and 45 meters wide. The designed annual passenger throughput is 11 million passengers, and the annual cargo and mail throughput is 11,900 tons.

The new Chinggis Khan International Airport is located in the Hesige Valley in the Serigeleng County, the central province of Mongolia, about 50 kilometers away from the capital city of Ulaanbaatar.

New international airport to be put into operation on July 4

On June 10, Prime Minister L.Oyun-Erdene became acquainted with the new Chinggis Khaan International Airport as well as the progress of the Bogdkhan Railway Bypass Line project. 


“Despite the order that was issued to put the Chinggis Khaan International Airport into operation starting from July 1, 2021, we are currently carrying out works to open the airport on July 4. There will be no flights conducted at Buyant-Ukhaa International Airport from July 4,” introduced Deputy Director of Civil Aviation Authority of Mongolia (MCAA) N.Myagmarsuren.


According to officials of the Civil Aviation Authority of Mongolia (MCAA), an operative team has been established with 38 members at the new airport so far. Prior to the opening, the aircraft at Buyant-Ukhaa International Airport will conduct test flights to the new airport. 

 

They then introduced that it is currently being planned to conduct a flight in route Ulaanbaatar - Tokyo - Ulaanbaatar at 11.40 am on the opening day of the airport. Preparations are also underway to receive a charter flight in route Frankfurt - Ulaanbaatar on the same day.


Regarding the matter of receiving foreign nationals during the National Naadam Festival, Prime Minister L.Oyun-Erdene said, “Firstly, Mongolia will receive citizens that have been fully vaccinated. If necessary, it should also be made possible to be involved in vaccinations and be put in mandatory isolation in the country,” noting that issues such as moving the operations of Buyant-Ukhaa airport and stabilizing flight operations needs to be discussed at a Cabinet meeting.


He then continued on to say, “A free economic zone should be established in Khushig Valley, with transport and logistics centers located at this place. Furthermore, the Bogdkhan Railway Bypass Line project needs to be launched before July 4. To establish its route, it is crucial to cooperate with the private sector.”
