Sun Yat-sen University announced on the evening of the 26th that the top international immunology journal "Immunity" published on November 25, the results of a new nanoparticle vaccine against the SARS-CoV-2 (covi, CCP virus). The covi nanoparticle vaccine is developed by Professor Zhang Hui's research group from the Institute of Human Virology, Sun Yat-sen University.  The research team found that nanoparticle coupling can significantly enhance the protective immune response of protein vaccines. Currently, this nanoparticle vaccine is applying for clinical approval to the State Food and Drug Administration.

According to the article, the neutralizing antibody titer against the CCP virus induced by this nanoparticle vaccine in mice ranks first in the world, and the neutralizing antibody titer induced in rhesus monkeys ranks third in the world. Although each laboratory has different detection methods and experimental sensitivity, it can still reflect the high titer of the nanoparticle vaccine.

Zhang Hui introduced that unlike inactivated vaccines, attenuated vaccines and adenovirus vaccines with mature technical routes, the nanoparticle vaccine is a multi-antigen recombinant protein vaccine that can display 24 identical or different covi antigens.

Zhang Hui’s team performed a wild-type covi respiratory tract infection on a humanized mouse model immunized with the nanoparticle vaccine. It was found that the lungs of the unimmunized mice were severely damaged, the virus replicated rapidly, and some mice died three days after infection. The mice immunized with the nanoparticle vaccine are in good health, with no lung damage, and no residual virus can be detected in 11 organs and tissues including the lung. It can be seen that the neutralizing antibodies induced by the nanoparticle vaccine can significantly protect the body from covi infection.

In terms of safety, the experimental results showed that the nanoparticle vaccine did not cause side effects such as damage to other organs in mice. The team also tested whether the antibodies induced by the mice could cause antibody-dependent infection enhancement (ADE). None of the antibodies induced by the particle vaccine had an ADE effect.
