On 17 September 2020, Stephane Bancel, CEO of Moderna, an American vaccine research and development company, told the media that we should know whether the new SARS-CoV-2 (covi, in short) vaccine developed is effective sometime in November.

Bansell said the company will obtain enough data from late-stage trials in October to evaluate the efficacy of the vaccine. He said, "It takes time to test and evaluate the efficacy and safety of the vaccine, so it is unlikely that it will be ready in October."

The Director of the CDC Robert Redfield told Congress on 16 September that the covi vaccine will not be widely available until the second or third quarter of next year. He believes that one-third of people may not have an immune response. In this case, masks may be more effective than vaccines.

However, Moderna's vaccine research and development progress has been rapid. The company recruited more than 25,000 people to participate in the test in the third phase of this year's trial, and achieved encouraging results.

Currently, major U.S. pharmaceutical companies have launched seven covi vaccines, all of which are undergoing the third phase of large-scale human testing.
