On 8 February 2020, the China Communist Party (CCP) media quoted experts as saying that novel coronavirus could be transmitted through aerosols. Just the day before, "aerosol transmission" was still among the "Latest Rumours" on WeChat's Rumour Assistant.

The CCP-level party media quoted experts in epidemic prevention at the Shanghai Epidemic Prevention and Control Press Conference on 8 February, emphasizing that the route of transmission of novel coronavirus has been confirmed to include direct transmission, aerosol transmission and contact transmission.

According to the official explanation, direct transmission refers to droplet transmission, which refers to droplets inhaled from the patient's mouth and nose. Contact transmission is the contact of hands with items contaminated by the virus. Both of these require close contact.

The so-called "aerosol transmission", which is the official term, means that droplets are mixed in the air to form a suspended "aerosol", which causes infection after inhalation. Aerosols can flow with air and travel long distances, increasing the risk of contactless infection.

Prior to this, the spread of the virus through the air has long been widely suspected by the public but similar cases have repeatedly appeared in official reports. Earlier, some experts even reminded readers that in the home sewers, patients' viruses contained in the faeces of the patients may drift to other homes with the air flow in the sewers.

The CCP officially acknowledged aerosol transmission on 8 February, and netizens found that in the WeChat Rumour Assistant on 7 February, "Coronavirus aerosol transmission" was also listed in "Latest Rumour Information".

Earlier on 5 February 2020, the "Pneumonitis Diagnosis and Treatment Plan for New Coronavirus Infection (Trial Fifth Edition)" published on the website of the National Health Commission of the Communist Party of China described the route of virus transmission as "aerosols and digestive tract infections. To be verified. "
