According to a report by Turkey Ensonhaber News Agency, Iraq has its first confirmed case of  COVID-19 (covid, in short) in its southern Dhi Qar Province, thus becoming the fifth Middle East country with confirmed cases after the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Israel and Lebanon.

The first Iraqi patient infected with covid is a student returning from Qom, Iran.

A total of more than 40 cases have been reported in the five countries in the Middle East with outbreaks. The notification of five deaths in Iran means that the epidemic situation in the region is becoming increasingly severe.

As the covid outbreak spreads, Iraq and Kuwait, which have land and maritime borders with Iran, are in high alert. As Iran's earliest outbreak epicentre of Qom is a popular tourist destination for Shiites in Iraq and Kuwait, the authorities dare not take it lightly.

Iran is the second largest exporter of Iraqi goods, with an annual export value of about $9 billion. The Iraqi authorities announced on 20 February that border crossings had been closed to Iranians for three days and called on the public not to travel to Iran. Iraqi Airways has announced the suspension of its scheduled flights to Tehran on 20 February 2020.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Iraq's hospitals are poorly equipped, with fewer than 10 doctors per 10,000 population in Iraq. The outside world is worried that once the covid epidemic breaks out in Iraq, its medical system may be unable to respond.
