Looking back on the flight to Baise and Deng Xiaoping's journey

Report by : Gan Yung Chyan, KUCINTA SETIA

Embarking on the first Singaporean flight to Baise from Guangzhou in June 2010 with Henan Airlines, it was two months before Henan Airlines crashed in Yichun after departing from Harbin on 24 August 2010. Baise is a prefecture-level city of Guangxi but the Chinese of Baise are used to calling Baise an old residential zone (老区).

Meaning a mountain pass in the local dialect, Baise is where the Communists (Deng Xiaoping, Chen Haoren etc) organized an uprising against the Kuomintang (Nationalist) government on 11 December 2019.

A huge park and a museum in Baise are in remembrance of the Communist Chinese in their Baise uprising and in condolence to Deng Xiaoping after his death in 1976. Baise thus plays a part in shaping Communism during the early days before the People's Republic of China and today its importance is just Communist tourism and the town's political importance is eclipsed by Zhongnanhai, Beijing, where Xi Jinping and the Communist cadres carry out their duties.

There are a few meaningful characters of wisdom etched on stone in the Baise Uprising Remembrance Park such as "Seek truth from facts" and "Walk your own way". Do they somewhat strike resonance with anyone during the pandemic? These are not socialist and communist ideas. These are universal values that remind people to investigate and know truths based on proof and Science.

The Chinese Communist Party leader must take cue from his predecessors and account to the world what causes SARS-CoV-2 and the covid epidemic in the first place. Its virus laboratories should not be ordered to destroy the initial novel coronavirus samples in order to evade responsibility, shake the pot and pour hot water onto foreign countries and food.

Baise welcomes visitors to embark on a different self-identity and problem-solving experience.
