The Trump administration announced on January 19 that the CCP had committed genocide and crimes against humanity against Uyghurs in Xinjiang. Experts predict that the latest measures of the US government may also lead or urge Europe and other Western countries to take similar actions.
According to comprehensive media reports, US Secretary of State Pompeo stated on Twitter that China (the CCP) has committed genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang against Uyghur Muslims and other religious and ethnic minorities. These actions are an insult to the Chinese people and all civilized countries around the world. China (the CCP) must be held accountable. Pompeo also said in a statement: "I believe that this genocide is still underway, and we are witnessing the CCP's systematic attempt to destroy Uyghurs." Pompeo said that the United States calls on China (the CCP) to immediately release all arbitrarily detained persons, abolish the detention system, and stop the persecution of Uyghurs and other minorities. Pompeo said in the statement that detailed records confirmed that these actions began at least March 2017, including arbitrary detention of more than 1 million Uyghurs and other ethnic and religious minorities, mandatory birth control, and arbitrary detention of most of them. Of people used torture, forced labor, and restricted freedom of religion, speech and movement. The statement stated that the CCP not only does not allow international observers to enter Xinjiang unhindered, and condemns credible reports about the deterioration of the local situation. It also concocts narratives about Uyghurs’ happy participation in education, counter-terrorism, poverty alleviation, and women’s empowerment projects, and at the same time tells its own country. The people spread the evil information that Uyghurs are malignant tumors and their beliefs are infectious diseases. Pompeo said in the statement, “After carefully examining the existing facts, I believe that China (the CCP) has committed genocide against the Uyghur Muslim majority and other religious minorities in Xinjiang.” In his statement on Tuesday, Pompeo called on all appropriate multilateral and relevant judicial institutions to work with the United States to promote accountability for those who commit these crimes. He said that the State Council will continue to investigate and collect relevant information and make relevant evidence available to relevant authorities and the international community within the scope permitted by law. Pompeo said, "We will not remain silent. If the Chinese Communist Party is allowed to commit genocide and crimes against humanity against its own people, it is conceivable that it will be more bold and reckless towards the free world in the near future. The Trump administration’s latest move by the Chinese Communist government triggered a strong reaction from all walks of life. At a hearing held in the Senate on the 19th, Blinken, the secretary of state for Biden’s new administration, who will take office on January 20, was asked whether he agreed with Pompeo announced the decision. He replied, "I also judged this way." The US Congress and Executive Committee on China (CECC) Co-Chairman and Florida Senator Rubio said in a statement: “With regard to the terrible crimes committed by the Chinese Communist Party against Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities, the Trump administration It’s the right thing to call it: crimes against humanity and genocide. The State Department’s determination today is an important step towards accountability and justice, as we have included in the 2021 appropriations bill. The crime that is happening under the Chinese government is a human tragedy that requires an immediate response from the international community. These determinations require the next administration, Congress, and our allies to take action. We must ensure that the United States and free nations do our best To put an end to these atrocities and ensure that this will continue to be an important agenda of the US policy towards China." The chairman of the World Uyghur Congress, Dorikun Aisha, tweeted to thank the US government. He said: "Thank you, Pompeo! Today, not only has a history written for Uyghurs, but also for all mankind. It shows that genocide cannot continue in the 21st century. Thank you America! The Heritage Foundation, a US think tank, issued a statement stating that Pompeo’s announcement “reflects the reality faced by the Uighur community in China and highlights the growing human rights violations they face” and inspires people’s concerns about what may constitute some of the most serious violations of the 21st century. Human rights actions are urgently needed for concern and attention, and it is recommended that the United States grant Uyghur refugee status and sanction more CCP officials. James Millward, a professor in the Department of History at Georgetown University and an expert on Xinjiang issues, said that the US government’s decision is very important. He said, "Previously, the Biden campaign team issued a statement last November, also calling China's policy in Xinjiang "genocide". Therefore, we can expect that the new government will continue to support this decision after taking office tomorrow." Georgetown University professor Mi Huajian said, taking the European Union as an example, “I hope that the characterization of this crime against humanity and genocide will help Biden’s new government convene other members of the international community to jointly condemn what is happening in Xinjiang. This certainty may play a role in the EU-China trade agreement debate. Some people in the European Parliament oppose this China-EU agreement because of everything that happened in the Uyghur region." Previously, the European Parliament passed a draft resolution on December 17 last year with an overwhelming 89% urging EU leaders to use new sanctions to punish CCP officials who persecute human rights in Xinjiang and other regions. There were 604 votes in favor, 20 votes against, and 57 abstentions. This draft resolution of the European Parliament urges EU leaders to take measures to sanction Chinese officials in Xinjiang. The draft is aimed at those CCP officials in Xinjiang who "made and implemented large-scale detention of Uyghurs and other Muslims and forced labor", as well as major state entities such as the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. The draft also mentioned that those who "plan to suppress basic rights such as religious freedom and freedom of movement in Xinjiang, Tibet and other places" should also be sanctioned.
