Myanmar Junta withholds import of Sputnik V from Burmese citizens

Myanmar's covid epidemic has entered the third wave. Due to the coup and resistance from the medical frontline workers, Min Aung Hlaing has withheld import of Sputnik V from Russia although the first batch of Sputnik V delivery to Myanmar was done in January 2021.

According to the TASS Russian News Agency's report on 6 February, a Russian military-diplomatic source told reporters in Moscow that "the decision to register the Russian vaccine under the emergency use authorization procedure was made by Acting President Senior General Min Aung Hlaing." According to the source, the first batch of the vaccine was delivered to Myanmar from Russia in January for registration procedures.

Timeline of Myanmar's COVID-19

Myanmar confirmed the first two confirmed covid cases on 23 March 2020 and the first death was registered on 31 March 2020. A second wave followed in August 2020. In both outbreaks, public participation was huge, with healthcare professionals and volunteers at the forefront of measures to prevent and contain the disease.

After Myanmar experienced a second wave of COVID-19 in August 2020, the National League for Democracy government began to implement a nationwide vaccination program on 27 January 2021, days before the military coup on 1 February 2021. Health-care staff and volunteer medical workers were the first to receive shots of the AstraZeneca vaccine donated by India.

In defiance of military rule, thousands of healthcare professionals are taking part in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) and refusing to work for the military regime.

SARS-CoV-2 testing declined from between about 16,000 and 18,000 swab tests a day in January under the ousted NLD civilian government to fewer than 2,000 per day between February and early June. Swab testing increased again in late June, with over 8,000 tests conducted.
