'Down with dictatorship': Thousands of Cubans demonstrate against Communist regime

Reporter : Jack Phillips / Publisher : The Epoch Times PREMIUM

Thousands of Cubans took to the streets on Sunday in a number of cities to protest against human rights abuses, a lack of freedom, and a worsening economic situation in the communist-ruled country.

Videos uploaded to social media appear to show demonstrations in a number of towns and cities, including the capital, Havana, on Sunday. Protesters, chanting in Spanish, said they “weren’t afraid” of the regime led by Miguel Diaz Canel, and said they wanted access to COVID-19 vaccines and an end to the regime.

It comes amid reports of gas, electricity, and vaccine shortages across the Caribbean island nation. Some analysts noted online that Sunday’s demonstrations are the first time that so many had protested the government since the Maleconazo uprising in 1994, which prompted a number of Cubans to leave the country by boat to the U.S.

Shouts of “down with the dictatorship,” “freedom,” and “homeland and life” were also heard during the demonstrations, according to footage uploaded online.

During different live broadcasts across Facebook, thousands of people can be seen marching through the streets of cities like San Antonio de los Baños, Guira de Melena, and Alquízar, reported South Florida’s WTVJ-TV.

“I just walked through town looking to buy some food and there were lots of people there, some with signs, protesting,” local resident Claris Ramirez said by phone. “They are protesting blackouts, that there is no medicine,” she added, reported the Reuters news agency.

In response to the demonstrations, Diaz-Canel echoed an often-repeated claim by other Marxist governments and blamed the protests on a foreign smear campaign initiated by the United States.

“The order of combat is given, the revolutionaries take to the streets,” he said on a state-run radio and television network, apparently ordering his security forces to disperse the demonstrators.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), who is of Cuban descent, chronicled the protests on Twitter.

“Spontaneous street protests breaking out in several cities in #Cuba right now with chants of #NoTenemosMiedo (We Are Not Afraid),” he wrote in a tweet. “Frustration with the dictatorships incompetence, greed & repression is mounting rapidly.”

The Senator also appeared to take note of security forces that were deployed.

“Here come the Communist repression squads in #Cuba … Still largely being ignored so far by US corporate media outlets,” Rubio wrote.

Florida Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar, the daughter of Cuban exiles, said that Diaz-Canel’s regime is now shutting off internet on the island.

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, also the son of Cuban exiles, whose city has a significant Cuban diaspora, called for an American-led intervention.

“Cubans are worthy and ready to rule themselves without tyranny,” Suarez said during a press conference. “It can end today and it must end today. The implications of this moment can mean freedom for millions of people in the hemisphere, from Nicaraguans and Venezuelans and so many more.”

Renewal of China-North Korea Friendship Treaty, CCP gave up land to North Korea

Reporter : Li Jing / Editor : Li Qiong / https://www.epochtimes.com/gb/21/7/11/n13082256.htm / Direct translation

At present, the CCP is becoming more and more isolated in the international arena. Following the extension of the Sino-Russian friendship treaty, the CCP recently announced the "China-DPRK Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance Treaty" renewal.

The "China-North Korea Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance" was signed in 1961, and in 1962, the CCP, which was isolated internationally, was engaged in "territorial diplomacy" and signed a China-North Korea border treaty with North Korea, which determined that it would include Changbai Mountain, Yalu River and large tracts of Chinese territory such as islands in the Tumen River and sandbanks were ceded to North Korea. The CCP has not dared to announce the secret agreement between China and North Korea.

According to a report by the Chinese Communist Party’s official voice, CCTV, on 11 July 2021, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Xi Jinping and General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea Kim Jong Un exchanged congratulatory messages on the 60th anniversary of the signing of the "China-North Korea Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance." In his congratulatory message, Xi Jinping stated that the treaty was a "strategic decision" between the two countries at the time and called for greater communication and "to grasp the direction of China-DPRK relations."

The Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between China and North Korea was signed in Beijing on 11 July 1961. The representatives of China and North Korea were Zhou Enlai and Kim Il Sung. The treaty was renewed twice in 1981 and 2001. The content of the treaty includes the agreement that the CCP and the DPRK are not hostile to each other, and once a contracting party enters a state of war, the other party must provide full military and other assistance.

The background of the signing of the China-North Korea Friendship Treaty was that the CCP was in a state of international isolation in the 1960s. Statistics show that from 1960 to 1969, under the leadership of Mao Zedong, the then leader of the Communist Party of China, the CCP’s diplomacy was basically tough in all directions. It continued to be "anti-imperialist," "anti-American," and "anti-revisionism," similar to the Soviet Union. They are in a state of isolation in the international arena.

At present, the CCP’s “wolf war diplomacy” forces the United States, Europe, Japan, India, and Australia to strengthen alliances and cooperation, and is falling into a new round of international isolation.

CCP’s “territorial diplomacy” ceded large tracts of land to North Korea

In the early 1960s, the CCP was in a state of isolation internationally, and its economy was also in trouble. The then Prime Minister of the Communist Party of China Zhou Enlai signed territorial treaties with neighboring countries through essentially traitorous "territorial diplomacy" in exchange for the so-called stable international environment. On 12 October 1962, the CCP and North Korea secretly signed the "China-North Korea Boundary Treaty" in Pyongyang. The Changbai Mountain Tianchi was divided into two and half was given to North Korea. The 1,200 square kilometers of Chinese territory near Tianchi was also ceded to North Korea. The CCP dare not announce the treaty so far.

On 16 October 2000, South Korea’s "Joongang Ilbo" obtained confidential documents from the CCP and exclusively disclosed the outline of the China-North Korea border treaty. A month later, in his monograph, former Minister of Unification Lee Jong-seok published the full text of the "China-North Korea Boundary Treaty" signed on October 12, 1962 and the "Protocol on the China-North Korea Boundary" signed on 20 March 1964 in Korean translation.

Shen Zhihua, a Chinese historian and professor at East China Normal University, has repeatedly verified the documents published by South Korea. His research report pointed out that as a result of the China-North Korea border treaty, the CCP gave up more than half of the Changbai Mountain Tianchi and a large area of the southern foot of the Changbai Mountain to North Korea. Of the 9.8 square kilometers Tianchi located on the main peak of Changbai Mountain in China, 54.5% belong to North Korea, while China only accounts for 45.5%. Regarding the two boundary rivers, the treaty does not use the method of demarcation with the center line of the main channel commonly used in international treaties. Instead, it stipulates that the two parties shall jointly own and manage the two boundary rivers. The islands and sandbars in the middle shall be settled by the two parties through consultation. Statistics show that of the 451 islands and sandbars, China has 187 and North Korea has 264. The division of waters between the two countries outside the Yalu River estuary is also beneficial to North Korea. In the Tumen River source area, from the "Jiandao Treaty" in 1909 to the "China-North Korea Boundary Treaty" in 1962, according to the scale of the map, the territory transferred by the CCP is about 1,200 square kilometers.

In addition, the CCP assigned Xindao and Silk Island to North Korea, which is tantamount to giving North Korea the main waterway and outlets to the sea. After that, Dandong became an inland city, and Dandong and the ships that went to sea through Dandong became history.

According to "Antu County Chronicles" (Jilin Wenshi Publishing House, 1993 edition, page 458), the Shenwu City in the former Antu County was transferred to North Korea, and the "Shenwu City Guard Company" of the border troops stationed in Antu County was ordered to withdraw immediately.

During the Cultural Revolution, Zhu Dehai, the governor of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, who participated in the negotiation of the border between China and North Korea, was persecuted by the Red Guards and called a "traitor." After the Cultural Revolution, Zhu Dehai was publicly rehabilitated, and the rehabilitative document clarified that the responsibility for the ceding of the territory lies with the superior.

Sean, a current affairs commentator, stated that the CCP’s ostensibly proclaimed “nothing to give up”, but the actual implementation is to exchange Chinese territory for the favor of neighbouring countries. The CCP and Myanmar (October 1960), Nepal (October 1961), North Korea (October 1962), Mongolia (December 1962), Pakistan (March 1963), Afghanistan (November 1963) signed border treaties or agreements, without exception, China took the initiative to make concessions and sold a large amount of territory to foreign countries.
