Sri Lanka, which closed its borders to international tourists in mid-March 2020 due to the pandemic, reopened its borders to commercial air traffic on 28 December 2020 when SkyUp Airlines launched a charter flight from Ukraine's capital Kiev Boryspil International Airport to Mattala,  the largest airport of Sri Lanka, via Sharjah.

The Ukrainian carrier is operating the route twice-weekly on a charter basis until the end of March 2021 for a total one-way distance of 6,934 kilometres with its 189-seat B737-800 jet. There are 180 passengers onboard the inaugural flight.

This is followed by Ukraine International Airlines, the second airline to operate another flight from Kiev on 29 December 2020.
